SUMMARY:In Translation Book Club: Electric Shamans at the Festival of the Sun
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to Upstart & Crow’s In Translation Book Club\, a celebration of global literature and storytelling across languages and borders! This free\, bi-monthly event in our studio space introduces readers to powerful voices writing in languages other than English\, amplifying fresh perspectives\, underheard narratives and bold ideas. \nOn Wednesday\, August 26 at 6:00pm\, we’ll be discussing Electric Shamans at the Festival of the Sun\, by Mónica Ojeda\, translated by Sarah Booker. \nSet in a music festival in the slopes of Ecuador’s volcanoes\, this novel is a series of pulsing\, incantatory narratives. The story is narrated by four young people\, plus a fifth ambiguous voice… Alongside their own experiences\, they tell the story of a girl named Noa. Something’s happened to her\, something strange\, but we’re not sure what. Awash in the music of “post-apocalyptic poets”\, this is a story about birth and death\, silence and noise\, desire\, grief\, violence\, and yes\, music. All told with Ojeda’s “beautiful and abysmal voice.” \nBring yourself and an open mind to discuss the book! You do not need to have purchased the book from us to attend\, but we’ll be offering a 10% discount on the title if you do. You can do so by selecting between two ticket options here. \nMore about Upstart & Crow: \nUpstart & Crow is a not-for-profit creative studio and literary incubator that champions writers\, readers and stories\, and the role they play in shaping our lives. We develop original programs\, support artists and revel in creative projects focused on Literature In Translation / Climate Solutions / Poetry / Civic Dialogue / Community & Skills Building … all with the aim of elevating the role of literature and storytelling in our lives. Find us on Granville Island\, Gibsons and online at upstartandcrow.com. \nAccessibility: \nThe main studio of our shop is accessible for folks with mobility aids. There is a washroom on the main floor available for attendees. SUMMARY:JAWS [tiburón]: A Celebration with Two Translators
DESCRIPTION:First published in Mexico in 2015\, JAWS by Xitlalitl Rodríguez Mendoza won the Premio Nacional de Poesía Ignacio Manuel Altamirano. \nJoin us in celebrating this award-winning poetry book’s first publication in English! We’ll be joined by translators Dora Prieto and Daniela Rodríguez Chevalier\, in conversation with author Marc Perez. \nWith sharp lyricism\, documentary fragments and cinematic echoes\, this poetry collection collapses the distance between sea and office\, aquarium and classroom\, resumé and body under attack. Fierce\, darkly funny\, and formally restless\, JAWS insists on the shark not as monster\, but as mirror—swimming\, working\, alive and curious about where meaning breaks down across languages and what lurks in the waters between… \nDora Prieto and Daniela Rodríguez Chevalier places Rodríguez Mendoza’s Spanish in conversation with an English that bends\, bites\, and swims alongside it. \nBooks will be available for sale. This event is free but please RSVP here. \nMore about Upstart & Crow: \nUpstart & Crow is a not-for-profit creative studio and literary incubator that champions writers\, readers and stories\, and the role they play in shaping our lives. SUMMARY:Upstart In Translation Book Club: Beckomberga
\n\n\n\nOn Wednesday\, June 10 at 6:00pm\, we’ll be discussing Beckomberga\, by Sara Stridsberg\, translated by Deborah Bragan-Turner. \nTranslated from Swedish\, this is an achingly blue novel about a woman who witnesses her father’s life spent almost entirely within the confines of Beckomberga\, a psychiatric hospital. But more than that\, it’s a beautifully restrained\, poetic contemplation on distance — between people\, between the sane and the insane\, living and dead. As Stridsberg writes\, “It is our long night\, Jim’s and mine\, opening up beneath me like the dark vault of heaven.” \nBring yourself and an open mind to discuss the book! You do not need to have purchased the book from us to attend\, but we’ll be offering a 10% discount on the title if you do. SUMMARY:Translation Spotlight: An Evening of Italian Literature
DESCRIPTION:Italian literature is so deeply beloved. But beyond the familiar\, what are the essential\, lesser-known works in translation that continue to shape how we understand Italy\, its histories\, and its literary voice? \nJoin us for an Italian Spotlight evening at our long table — an intimate\, salon-style gathering full of reading and great conversation. The evening will feature a curated reading list by professor Michela Valmori\, who will guide us through a selection of works in translation alongside Italian food and drink. The reading list will feature New York Review Books\, the cult-favourite series celebrated for its eclectic catalogue and beautifully designed covers. \nEmerging from an Italy shaped by war\, social change\, and cultural tension\, these texts explore individuals whose lives are shaped — and often fractured — by history. Moving through landscapes of memory\, family\, and marginality\, each work reveals a tension between belonging and estrangement. Together\, they document a shift from collective history toward increasingly personal and fragmented forms of selfhood\, where being “out of place” becomes a defining condition of modern Italian literary identity. \nThe evening will be accompanied by a special exhibition: Memories\, Maps\, Reflections: The Textile Cartography of Bettina Matzkuhn. Presented at Il Museo Gallery at the Italian Cultural Centre (April 11–May 24\, 2026)\, Bettina Matzkuhn’s work explores place\, movement\, and memory through intricate textile maps. You can learn more about her work here. \nThis event is in partnership with Il Museo\, the Italian Cultural Centre Museum. \nThe registration fee for this event is $20. All proceeds of the event go to Upstart & Crow’s non-profit programming\, including writer residencies\, book clubs\, grants and more. Please RSVP here to reserve your spot. \nMore about the facilitator: \nMichela Valmori is a researcher and professor at the University of British Columbia (UBC)\, appointed by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs to promote Italian culture worldwide. She holds a PhD in Comparative Literature and has published several works\, including Rosa: The Untold Story of an Italian American Immigrant and Her Hidden Secrets\, And There Were Red Geraniums Everywhere\, and Oceani allo Specchio. Her research and teaching bridge Gender Studies and cultural diplomacy\, exploring Italian literature\, migration\, and transnational identities while fostering international dialogue. \nMore about Upstart & Crow: \nUpstart & Crow is a not-for-profit creative studio and literary incubator that champions writers\, readers and stories\, and the role they play in shaping our lives. SUMMARY:Upstart In Translation Book Club: Now I Surrender
\nOn Wednesday\, April 29 at 6:00pm\, we’ll be discussing Now I Surrender\, by Álvaro Enrigue\, translated by Natasha Wimmer. \nIn 1886\, famed Apache leader Geronimo surrendered to the U.S. army after decades of resistance across the borderlands of Mexico and the United States. Álvaro Enrigue’s newly translated novel takes its title from his words: “Once I moved about like the wind. Now I surrender to you and that is all.” \nBeginning with the kidnapping of a Mexican woman\, the novel follows the ragtag expedition sent to retrieve her — a soldier\, a sharpshooting woman known as “the Nun\,” and two devilishly charismatic Yaqui twins. Part anti-imperialist epic and part alt-western\, Now I Surrender takes apart and reassembles the mythology of the “American” borderlands to challenge the stories we think we know about conquest and resistance. The result is a gripping\, genre-bending meditation on freedom\, myth\, and the contested histories of the desert frontier. Named a most anticipated book of 2026 by The New York Times\, The Washington Post and LitHub. \nBring yourself and an open mind to discuss the book! You do not need to have purchased the book from us to attend\, but we’ll be offering a 10% discount on the title if you do. SUMMARY:Time\, Memory\, Nostalgia: An Evening of Bulgarian Literature & Visual Art
DESCRIPTION:“Gospodinov’s tuga is ‘a longing for something that hasn’t happened . . . a sudden realization that life is slipping away and that certain things will never happen to you\, for a whole list of reasons—personal\, geographical\, political.” — Garth Greenwell\, The Bulgarian Sadness of Georgi Gospodinov.  \nJoin us on Tuesday\, March 3 at 6:30pm for a special edition of our Translation Spotlight series. Part literary salon\, part gallery reception\, this post-dinner gathering will bring contemporary Bulgarian literature into conversation with an accompanying exhibition of visual work by Biliana Velkova. \nGuided by Biliana and Milena Droumeva\, you’ll be introduced to a curated reading list of translated works by Bulgarian writers\, all of which grapple with nostalgia\, post‑communist identity\, fragmented memory\, collective history\, and borders. Threading through these readings is tuga — an untranslatable Bulgarian word for a deep\, enduring melancholy — through which you’ll be offered a portrait of Bulgarian life after the collapse of communism and within its present realities. \nYou’ll also be the first to enjoy an exhibition of Biliana Velkova’s Balkan Weather Tales\, displayed throughout our Granville Island studio. This series features works on paper\, in gouache\, oil pastel and gold leaf. Once brought to life through song and oral tradition\, the pieces reimagine Bulgarian folklore. Here\, creatures resurface in layered\, hypnotic drawings that bridge ancient belief systems with contemporary anxieties. \nCome take a seat at our long table and enjoy an evening of Bulgarian literature\, art\, food\, and conversation. Spaces are very limited\, so please RSVP here. \nMore about Upstart & Crow: \nUpstart & Crow is a not-for-profit creative studio and literary incubator that champions writers\, readers and stories\, and the role they play in shaping our lives. SUMMARY:Translation Spotlight: Ukraine\, Looking at History
DESCRIPTION:Step out of the winter chill and into an evening of Ukrainian food\, drink\, and extraordinary translated literature. \nOn Friday\, January 9 at 6:30 p.m.\, join us for a special edition of our Translation Spotlight series — Ukraine — presented in partnership with Maple Hope Foundation. \nNot a typical literary talk\, you’ll be gathered around our long table for a chance to taste traditional Ukrainian food and drink\, participate in discussion\, and learn about writers who carry both ancestral history and the immediacy of invasion into their work. \nGuided by Svitlana Matviyenko (Associate Professor of Critical Media Analysis at SFU) and Alina Senchenko (Ukrainian Canadian artist and curator)\, we’ll explore remarkable works of translated prose and poetry that trace the twisted routes of intimate and collective histories\, asking how some events persist in memory while others are erased\, obscured\, or slip through the cracks of remembrance. All of these works bear witness to Russia’s ongoing invasion\, and open a human-centred dialogue on how literature can help carry impossible stories. \nYou’ll leave with a specially curated reading list of Ukrainian writers to explore\, and selected books will be available for purchase. \nThis event will also include a poetry reading by Elizabeth Bachinsky. \nOur Translation Spotlight events are intimate and open to a limited amount of participants. To support our non-profit programming and to help us cover costs\, this event is $30. Spots go quickly\, so please RSVP here. \nMore about Maple Hope Foundation: Maple Hope Foundation emerged from the global Ukrainian volunteer movement in 2014\, which began in response to the Euromaidan in Kyiv. Their founding members first connected during the solidarity marches held in Vancouver nine years ago and their mission is to support displaced Ukrainians in Canada and Ukrainians on the ground in their response and resistance to Russia’s unprovoked invasion. \nMore about Upstart & Crow: \nUpstart & Crow is a not-for-profit creative studio and literary incubator that champions writers\, readers and stories\, and the role they play in shaping our lives. SUMMARY:In Translation Book Club: The Wax Child
\nAfter a brief summer reprieve\, we’re back with a darker read to accompany you through spooky season — The Wax Child\, by Olga Ravn\, translated from Danish by Martin Aitken. \nFans of Robert Eggers\, rejoice: Olga Ravn’s brand new novel revisits an infamous seventeenth-century witch trial in Northern Jutland told through the strange\, all-seeing eyes of a wax doll who yearns for her lost maker. Dark and beautiful\, the story follows Christenze Kruckow and several women accused of witchcraft\, their lives punctuated by whispers of the Devil and the threat of the stake. Interwoven with original archival sources — letters\, spells\, and court records — Ravn reconstructs a fragile world where the true horror lies not in the supernatural\, but in the brutality of people influenced by suspicion\, gendered violence\, and the will to dominate. \nWe’ll be discussing it on Wednesday\, November 26 at 6:00pm. Bring yourself and an open mind to discuss the book! That’s all. \nYou do not need to have purchased the book from us to attend\, but we’ll be offering a 10% discount on the title if you do. You can do so by selecting between two ticket options. RSVP here. \nMore about Upstart & Crow: \nUpstart & Crow is a not-for-profit creative studio and literary incubator that champions writers\, readers and stories\, and the role they play in shaping our lives. SUMMARY:Translator for a Night: A Workshop with Janet Hong
DESCRIPTION:Translation\, often considered an act of literary alchemy\, allows beloved texts to live fully in new linguistic and cultural spaces. Yet despite its essential role in the literary world\, it’s an art form that many of us who speak only one language have never experienced first-hand.\n \nWhat if you could step into the shoes of a translator for one night? Join us on Tuesday\, March 11 at 6:30 PM for an immersive translation workshop in which you’ll discover the techniques and magic of translating texts… whether you know one language or five.  \nLed by renowned translator\, Janet Hong\, this hands-on workshop offers an introduction to the art and practice of translation: how it works\, why it matters\, and the creative decisions that shape a text’s journey from one language to another. You will work with annotated excerpts from renowned literary works in French\, Spanish\, or German to craft your own English translations—which we’ll then discuss and compare to the published English. Together\, we’ll reflect on the interpretive choices that contribute to the act of translation\, uncovering the many nuances between fidelity and creativity that inform this vital art.  \nTo support our non-profit programming and to help us cover costs\, this workshop is $10 . If you are experiencing barriers to attend\, please reach out over email — we are happy to provide you with one of our reserved free-by-donation tickets. This workshop is accessible to monolingual participants. No prior knowledge of another language is required. \nWe have limited seating\, so please reserve your spot here! \n  \nMore about Upstart & Crow: \nUpstart & Crow is a not-for-profit creative studio and literary incubator that champions writers\, readers and stories\, and the role they play in shaping our lives. SUMMARY:A Sunday Morning with Yuri Herrera
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a Found in Translation discussion on Sunday\, Nov. 3 at 10am PDT with Yuri Herrera about history\, justice\, literature… and how 19th-century New Orleans can help us understand the world we live in. \n“Told in Herrera’s typically sparkling\, form-exploding language\, this one is screaming ‘modern epic.’” — Brittany Allen\, Literary Hub \nA master mesmerizer of both prose and plot\, Yuri Herrera is one of Upstart & Crow’s literary heroes\, and we’re thrilled to present a conversation with him about his latest work: Season of the Swamp (translated from the Spanish by Lisa Dillman). \nThis is a magnificent work of speculative history centring a young exile named Benito Juárez\, who disembarks at a fetid port city at the edge of a swamp. Years later\, he will become the first indigenous head of state in the postcolonial Americas\, but now he is as anonymous and invisible as any other migrant to the roiling and alluring city of New Orleans. \nHerrera imagines the 18 months Juárez spent in the city in 1853. In New Orleans\, amidst the carnivalesque reality and the grotesque trafficking of human beings\, Juárez tries to shape his future. Publisher’s Weekly describes the novel as “glorious and messy as the best New Orleans gumbo\,” and celebrates Herrera’s vivid depiction of the chaos of Mardi Gras. “It’s a triumph.” \nReserve your ticket here. \nMore about Upstart & Crow: \nLocated on Granville Island\, Upstart & Crow is a literary arts studio for curious readers and creative storytellers alike. We are international in our outlook\, and local in our sensibilities. We create opportunities to surface new talent and champion bold ideas through events\, workshops\, literary launches\, unique partnerships — and yes\, we also sell books! \nHealth precautions: \nWe want this event to be safe for all. Masks are welcome\, though we won’t enforce them. We hope that folks who come will be vaccinated and boosted and will stay home if they feel ill. \nAccessibility: \nThe main studio of our shop is accessible for folks with mobility aids. SUMMARY:Ukrainian Voices: A Talk with Lyuba Yakimchuk
DESCRIPTION:It’s our third Ukrainian Voices event! Join us for an online conversation on Sunday\, October 27 at 10 AM. Our special guests will include Lyuba Yakimchuk—the award-winning Ukrainian poet\, playwright\, and screenwriter\, renowned for her poem collections such as Apricots of Donbas—in conversation with Amelia Glaser\, distinguished scholar\, translator\, and author. \nApricots of Donbas is a phenomenal collection of poetry\, told through the eyes of a woman who observes her homeland being ravaged by war. Silently\, she strives to understand the chaos that surrounds her. \nA sense of playfulness and repetition (a futuristic Ukrainian poetic style) characterizes Yakimchuk’s poetry. Conversations will address this unique voice and how language transforms during war. How does contrast—the harshness of coal and the delicate beauty of apricot blossoms—convey a vital sense of the Donbas region? \nThis event is part of Senchenko’s Ukrainian Day programming\, in partnership with the Maple Hope Foundation\, a Canadian not-for-profit organization committed to helping people suffering from the war in Ukraine\, and the Upstart & Crow Literary Arts Society. \nThis event is taking place online and is free\, but please reserve your spot here! \n  \nMore about Upstart & Crow: \nLocated on Granville Island\, Upstart & Crow is a literary arts studio for curious readers and creative storytellers alike.
