SUMMARY:In Translation Book Club: The Song of Stork and Dromedary
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to Upstart & Crow’s In Translation Book Club\, a celebration of global literature and storytelling across languages and borders! This free\, bi-monthly event in our studio space introduces readers to powerful voices writing in languages other than English\, amplifying fresh perspectives\, underheard narratives and bold ideas. \n\n\nOn Wednesday\, October 28 at 6:00pm\, we’ll be discussing The Song of Stork and Dromedary\, by Anjet Daanje\, translated by David McKay. \nFall is just around the corner… the perfect time to dive into this 700-page ‘gothic’ tome. Heralded as “the best Dutch novel of the century\,” it’s loosely inspired by the life (and afterlives) of Emily Brontë. We’re introduced to a young woman named Eliza who\, during her short life\, publishes a masterpiece. What follows is a series of interlocking narratives\, each growing in intensity\, as those who come in contact with her book seem to lose their minds… It’s a meta exploration on the act of writing\, the pursuit of The Masterpiece\, and what it means to work in a formidable artistic lineage — “the gothic.” \nBring yourself and an open mind to discuss the book! You do not need to have purchased the book from us to attend\, but we’ll be offering a 10% discount on the title if you do. You can do so by selecting between two ticket options here. \nMore about Upstart & Crow: \nUpstart & Crow is a not-for-profit creative studio and literary incubator that champions writers\, readers and stories\, and the role they play in shaping our lives. We develop original programs\, support artists and revel in creative projects focused on Literature In Translation / Climate Solutions / Poetry / Civic Dialogue / Community & Skills Building … all with the aim of elevating the role of literature and storytelling in our lives. Find us on Granville Island\, Gibsons and online at upstartandcrow.com. \nAccessibility: \nThe main studio of our shop is accessible for folks with mobility aids. There is a washroom on the main floor available for attendees. As part of disability justice and community care for the chronically ill\, vulnerable and elderly\, we ask that you refrain from attending if you feel sick. \nQuestions: hello[at]upstartandcrow.com.
