SUMMARY:Every Poem is a Love Poem: A Poetry Workshop with Kyla Jamieson
DESCRIPTION:According to the poet Chen Chen\, “poetry matters because it nourishes the heart.” Likewise\, the heart nourishes poetry. In this workshop\, we’ll look at poets and authors who engage with love as their subject matter or as a guiding principle for their writing. \nParticipants will learn about poetic forms and tools\, reflect on who and what they love\, and experiment with ways of incorporating these methods and considerations into their writing. Through reading\, discussion\, and writing\, we will trace connections between love and creative expression. \nThis workshop is designed for anyone who wishes to develop or deepen their writing practice. All levels of familiarity with language and poetry are welcome. We will be reading poems in English\, but English fluency is not required. \nPlease bring a notebook and pen\, or whichever tools or technology you prefer to write with. Participants are also encouraged to bring a favourite quote about love or a definition of love that resonates with them. \nTo ensure event attendance and to help us cover costs\, this event is $15. Please RSVP here to reserve your spot. If you are experiencing barriers to attend\, please reach out over email. We’re happy to provide you with one of our scholarship spots. \nThis workshop is offered in tandem with our all-day Valentine’s printmaking intensive at New Leaf Editions. Participants registered for printmaking will receive a complimentary ticket to this poetry workshop\, though attendance at both is optional. Those who choose to take part in both will have the opportunity to bring what they write here to New Leaf Studio\, where they will learn how to set type\, print lino and produce a finished broadsheet. If you are registered for printmaking and want to attend this poetry workshop\, please email us to let us know. \nMore about Upstart & Crow: \nUpstart & Crow is a not-for-profit creative studio and literary incubator that champions writers\, readers and stories\, and the role they play in shaping our lives. SUMMARY:Poetry as Research Method: “don’t panic! and don’t write nature poems!”
DESCRIPTION:In this workshop\, we’ll consider poetry as a kind of research method that can help us think through crucial questions — in a time of climate crisis\, on stolen and unceded Indigenous lands: Where are we? How did we get here? What do we know\, and what do we still need to know\, about how to be here\, now? \nAs we are different people\, and different writers\, and as we have different relationships with the land\, and with ourselves\, we need different things. Our goal in this workshop\, then\, is to begin to develop poetry-research plans for ourselves\, in a mutually supportive and resource-sharing way. \nOur facilitator\, Fenn Stewart\, will share some of what she has learned from other writers and artists who are working through their own relationships with birds\, bears\, colonialism\, “Canada\,” other homelands\, other home nations\, other ancestors\, highways\, diasporas\, gardening\, zucchinis\, zebra mussels\, salmon\, lawns\, hiking trails\, and poetry itself. \nFenn will also share what she’s learned from Indigenous\, anti-racist\, and anti-colonial writers about some of the frames (like “settler apocalypticism\,” and certain kinds of “nature poetry”) that some of us get stuck in\, sometimes\, when we write about land\, and place\, and climate. \nPlease come prepared to read and think and write; speaking and sharing are warmly encouraged (but not required if unpleasant for you). \nTo support our non-profit programming and to help us cover costs\, this workshop is $10. RSVP here. If you are experiencing barriers to attend\, please reach out over email. We’re happy to provide you with one of our scholarship spots. We have reserved half of our available seats for attendees who are BIPOC/PGM. Anyone who self-identifies as Black\, Indigenous and/or a Person of Colour or People of the Global Majority is welcome to reserve these tickets. \nWhat to bring: \n\nA memory of the earliest plant\, bird\, or animal that you remember becoming acquainted with\, as well as (if applicable) a memory of the person or persons who introduced to you that being.\nA memory of the earliest time you ate straight out of a forest or garden or lake or river or ocean (berries\, mushrooms\, fish\, clams).\nYour earliest memory of a seeing\, or smelling\, or feeling a wildfire.\n\nMore about Upstart & Crow: \nUpstart & Crow is a not-for-profit creative studio and literary incubator that champions writers\, readers and stories\, and the role they play in shaping our lives. SUMMARY:Sounding Out: Exploring\, Creating & Performing Text Scores with Elee Kraljii Gardiner
DESCRIPTION:A text score is\, “a collection of verbally notated meditations that may be enjoyed by anyone in a variety of ways: read as poetry\, performed alone or performed for an audience.” Pauline Oliveros\, Sonic Meditations I – XXV (1971) \nJoin us on Friday\, November 21 at 6pm for a mini-intensive workshop with Vancouver Poet Laureate\, Elee Kraljii Gardiner. \nIn this playful two-hour workshop for anyone curious about words\, performance\, and sound\, we will experiment\, create some attempts\, and expand our artistic practice as we step out of the familiar into a space of curiosity. Our form is the text score\, a piece of writing that can be an instruction\, concept\, list\, poem\, diagram (or something else!). We’ll look at text scores from artists ranging from Fluxus to Futurist\, Yoko Ono and other composers and sound artists. Then we will create our own. \nAfter the workshop\, we’ll take a 30-minute break and reconvene at 8:30pm to perform the pieces in a gently supportive “world premiere” for friends\, family\, and the public. \nWe aim to support equitable engagement and welcome explorations of vibration\, movement\, and other ideas that expand our understanding of access while challenging audism and other barriers for the Deaf or hard of hearing. \nTo ensure event attendance and to help us cover costs\, this workshop is $10. RSVP here. If you are experiencing barriers to attend\, please reach out over email. We’re happy to provide you with one of our scholarship spots. \nNo previous writing or music experience is required! \nAbout Upstart & Crow: Upstart & Crow is a not-for-profit creative studio and literary incubator that champions writers\, readers and stories\, and the role they play in shaping our lives. SUMMARY:Praise and the Practice of Naming: A Generative Writing Workshop for a Complex World
DESCRIPTION:In this 90-minute online session\, Preeti Kaur Dhaliwal—our 2025 resident poet—will guide you through an exploration of praise poems as a radical\, expansive form—not just for gratitude and joy\, but for holding the contradictions of being alive. Together\, we’ll explore how praise can be a practice of witnessing the full complexity of our lives: the beauty and the grief\, the ordinary and the sacred\, the resilience and the rupture. We’ll read work by Black and Indigenous poets whose writing expands the notion of praise and deepens our relationship to language\, land\, memory\, and community. You’ll be invited to engage with the world on the page—not just the easy things\, but the hard\, the overlooked\, the still-transforming. \nWith the support of generative prompts\, writing techniques\, and grounding exercises\, you’ll be invited to write from your own voice\, body\, and experience. There will be opportunities to share your words\, but no obligation. Whether you’re here to meet the page with tenderness\, curiosity\, reverence\, or uncertainty\, there’s space for you. All are welcome. \nPreeti centers choice\, community care\, and the belief that stories can shift how we see and hold ourselves\, one another\, and the world. No writing experience is required—just bring your curiosity\, your honesty\, and something to write with. \nTo ensure event attendance\, this workshop is $5. If you are experiencing barriers to attend\, please reach out over email. We’re happy to provide you with one of our scholarship spots. \nSpots go quickly\, so please reserve your place here! \nAdditional information: \nIf you can’t make it to this workshop\, you can find Preeti’s online drop-in writing sessions here. To find out more about Indian Summer Festival\, or to register for one of their upcoming events\, click here. \nAbout Upstart & Crow: \nLocated on Granville Island\, Upstart & Crow is a not-for-profit literary arts studio for curious readers and creative storytellers alike. We are international in our outlook\, and local in our sensibilities. We create opportunities to surface new talent and champion bold ideas through events\, workshops\, literary launches\, unique partnerships — and yes\, we also sell books!

SUMMARY:Writing Toward Borderless Solidarities: A Workshop with Poet in Residence\, Preeti Kaur Dhaliwal
DESCRIPTION:Presented in collaboration with Indian Summer Festival\, this generative workshop with Preeti Kaur Dhaliwal\, Upstart & Crow’s 2025 Poet in Residence\, invites participants to explore the theme of borderless solidarities through creative writing\, connection\, and shared reflection. \nWe’ll begin with a series of freewriting exercises that invite you to explore the idea of borders — between people\, places\, identities\, and within ourselves. Through grounding prompts\, sensory details\, and gentle strategies to quiet the inner critic\, we’ll experiment with different ways to find your flow and create space for language to move through us with more ease. To wonder and to begin. \nThe second half of the workshop will include a collaborative writing process: at each table\, participants will create a group pantoum\, a form with roots in Malaysia that loops and repeats from quatrain to quatrain. What begins as an individual line will become part of a shared rhythm\, shifting meaning as it moves from one person to the next. This collective process will allow us to move past the borders of our own pages\, loosening control and making room for surprise\, connection\, and co-creation. \nIt’s not about making a perfect poem. It’s about experimentation and gathering; discovering what becomes possible when we write together; and seeing the reverberations and juxtapositions that invite us to see our own words — and each other’s — in new ways. Together\, we’ll explore how writing can be an act of deep hospitality — welcoming the lines of others into the same space to create new relationships and new meanings. \nYou don’t need to come in with an academic opinion\, or even a sense of yourself as a writer. You don’t even need to consider yourself creative. All you need is a desire to write and be in community. \nTo support our non-profit programming and to help us cover costs\, this workshop is $10. If you are experiencing barriers to attend\, please reach out over email. We’re happy to provide you with one of our scholarship spots. We have reserved half of our available seats for attendees who are BIPOC/PGM. Anyone who self-identifies as Black\, Indigenous and/or a Person of Colour or People of the Global Majority is welcome to buy these tickets. \nWe have very limited seating and spots go quickly\, so please reserve your place here! \nWhat to bring:\nPlease bring something to write with\, an open mind\, a mask and a willingness to let your words travel beyond you. (If you forget a mask\, a pen or paper\, don’t worry\, we got you!). Please note\, we strive to maintain a fragrance-free environment to support the health and comfort of all participants (including the health of the facilitator) — please avoid wearing scented products. \nAdditional information:\nIf you can’t make it to this workshop\, you can find Preeti’s online drop-in writing sessions here. To find out more about Indian Summer Festival\, or to register for one of their upcoming events\, click here. \nAbout Upstart & Crow:\nLocated on Granville Island\, Upstart & Crow is a not-for-profit literary arts studio for curious readers and creative storytellers alike. To inspire your practice\, Sheryda will share examples of contemporary collage\, as well as strategies to promote spontaneity\, intuition\, and imaginative leaps.  \nYou’ll make two poems: one using your assemblage as a generative prompt\, and another by selecting lines from books at random to compose a mystical textual collage. \nWe’ll also be seeking inspiration from the following texts: \n\nExtraordinary Things to Cut Out and Collage\, by Maria Rivan\nThe Work of Art\, by Adam Moss\nOrdinary Beast\, by Nicole Sealey\nSpontaneous Particulars\, by Susan Howe (title inspiration) \n\nBooks will be available to purchase! \nThis workshop is open to writers and artists at all levels of experience. SUMMARY:Strips and Remnants: A Short Poem Workshop with Vancouver’s Poet Laureate Elee Kraljii Gardiner
DESCRIPTION:Join Vancouver’s Poet Laureate—award-winning poet\, editor\, and artist—Elee Kraljii Gardiner\, for a short poem workshop on Tuesday\, April 22 at 6:30pm. \nUsing the idea of fragments (visual\, sonic\, or otherwise) this poetry workshop explores how small pieces become part of a whole. \nWe will experiment with physical materials on site\, perhaps generating new materials in the form of sounds and word lists\, and consider how assembling new patterns creates associative energy in the small poem. \nThis playful workshop is open to writers and non-writers of all experience levels who are curious about new methods of composition. Please bring pen and paper. Digital devices are welcome but not required. Participants will leave with short poems and with strategies for editing. \nThis is a free-by-donation event. To help us continue hosting workshops such as this one\, the suggested donation is $10.
