SUMMARY:‘Confronting the Resurgent Right’: Author Talk
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening with Miriam Edelson and Will Horter\, two contributors to the new book Confronting the Resurgent Right\, which explores the deep roots and new threats of Canada’s regressive right-wing entities. \nOver the past decade\, we have witnessed the global mainstreaming of hate as false narratives and conspiracy theories about equity and inclusion\, immigration\, COVID-19 and vaccinations\, and the “gay agenda” have become permissible talking points among right-wing politicians\, pundits\, and influencers. \nIn Confronting the Resurgent Right\, scholars and activists take Canada’s 2022 “Freedom Convoy” as a recent manifestation of deep-rooted extremism. Providing intersectional commentary on the resurgence of the right\, they demonstrate how its ideology permeates and shapes the structures of our society. \nBalancing evidence-based research with careful analysis of the genesis and methods of the right\, this volume models pathways of resistance and charges us to work together to expose and counter the regressive forces that spew hate. \nThis event is free\, but please RSVP here as capacity is limited. Books will be on hand for sale and signing. \nMore about Upstart & Crow: \nUpstart & Crow is a not-for-profit creative studio and literary incubator that champions writers\, readers and stories\, and the role they play in shaping our lives. We develop original programs\, support artists and revel in creative projects focused on Literature In Translation / Climate Solutions / Poetry / Civic Dialogue / Community & Skills Building … all with the aim of elevating the role of literature and storytelling in our lives. Find us on Granville Island\, Gibsons and online at upstartandcrow.com. \nAccessibility: \nThe main studio of our shop is accessible for folks with mobility aids. There is a washroom on the main floor available for attendees. As part of disability justice and community care for the chronically ill\, vulnerable and elderly\, we ask that you refrain from attending if you feel sick. \nQuestions: hello[at]upstartandcrow.com.

SUMMARY:Sharpen Your Climate Story: A Workshop with Chloë Fraser
DESCRIPTION:Sharpen your climate story in this cozy\, hands-on workshop for women working in the environmental space and adjacent fields. Part journaling\, part talking circle\, part strategic brainstorm\, this 90-minute session helps you find the language and framework to share why you care about climate change. \nWe’ll use guided prompts to draw out your personal climate story\, including how your experiences have shaped both your connection to this work and how you show up in it professionally. You’ll explore narrative strategies that externalize your authority and perspective\, and connect the dots between your own story and the climate impacts you care about most. From there\, we’ll shape it into a clear\, audience-ready pitch and workshop it in small circles. \nYou’ll leave with a refined mini-climate story and a resource cheat sheet of tools and language — some familiar\, some new — that you can put to use immediately. \nThis event is part of our Women Talking Climate series. The registration fee is $5. All proceeds of the event go to Upstart & Crow’s climate programming\, including writers’ residencies\, book clubs\, grants and more. Please RSVP here to reserve your spot. Doors open at 6:15. \nMore about Upstart & Crow: \nUpstart & Crow is a not-for-profit creative studio and literary incubator that champions writers\, readers and stories\, and the role they play in shaping our lives. SUMMARY:‘Brotherhood Is a Constant Possibility’: An Evening with Ryan Cho
DESCRIPTION:Join us in celebrating the launch of Brotherhood Is a Constant Possibility: Asian Masculinity in a World Made for Whiteness\, the debut from Vancouver-based author Ryan Cho. Drawing from his own experiences and interviews with other Asian men and nonbinary people\, Cho explores how culture\, sexuality and race combine to influence identity. \nAlong the way\, he meets people redefining what masculinity means to them and discusses what we can do to steward a version of masculinity that is inclusive\, progressive and authentic. \nCandid\, challenging and personal\, Brotherhood Is a Constant Possibility is part memoir\, part research and social analysis\, inviting readers to question the roles Asian men have been allowed to play and to imagine broader and more nuanced ways of thinking about masculinity and men. \nThis event is free\, but please RSVP here as capacity is limited. For every book bought at the event\, the author will donate $10 to local groups supporting masculine folk ($5 to the Dude’s Club of Vancouver and $5 to the House of Rice). Hope to see you there! \nMore about Upstart & Crow: \nUpstart & Crow is a not-for-profit creative studio and literary incubator that champions writers\, readers and stories\, and the role they play in shaping our lives. SUMMARY:Racial Virtuality: A Book Launch and Celebration with Danielle Wong
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening of discussion and light refreshments to celebrate Danielle Wong’s new book\, Racial Virtuality: Information Capitalism and the Suggestive Materiality of Asianness (New York University Press\, 2026). Danielle will be in conversation with Christopher Kawika Guillermo and Christine Kim. \nRacial Virtuality contends that racialization not only occurs through representation in media\, but also through our very interactions with technologies and their unseen operations. By putting memes\, social media apps\, and digital platforms in conversation with more traditional cultural productions like film\, literature\, and theatre\, Racial Virtuality broadens our understanding of racialization in the digital age and challenges traditional notions of cultural production and subject formation. In doing so\, it demonstrates how Asianness circulates as a new media form in a digital marketplace of commodified affects\, senses\, gestures\, and tastes. Racial Virtuality illuminates how Asianness is a specific mode of informational capital\, but also a surprising mode of relation and critique. \nThis event is free\, but please RSVP here to reserve your spot. Books will be available for sale and signing. \nMore about Upstart & Crow: \nUpstart & Crow is a not-for-profit creative studio and literary incubator that champions writers\, readers and stories\, and the role they play in shaping our lives. SUMMARY:Riskier Than Fiction: Autobiography on the Page and the Stage
DESCRIPTION:“Sometimes\, memory is more powerful than metaphor.” — Sophy Romvari \nArtists have been writing about their lives forever\, finding rich and resonant stories in the infinite complexity of their own internal world. And they have always had to navigate the tricky questions of what to share and what to keep private\, how to balance personal significance against narrative significance\, and when and how much to trust your own memory. \nAcclaimed writers Lara Rae (Little Mosque on the Prairie\, The Debaters) and Carmen Aguirre (The Refugee Hotel\, Fire Never Dies: The Tina Modotti Project) have both ventured into the murky waters of the past to create autobiography; Rae in her award-winning play Dragonfly\, Carmen in two bestselling memoirs\, including 2012 Canada Reads winner Something Fierce. \nJoin these two nationally renowned storytellers for a moderated discussion about how they transformed memory into powerful\, poetic works of art\, and how that process transformed them in turn. The conversation will be moderated by artist Julian Legere. This event is free\, but please RSVP here as capacity is limited. \nMore about Upstart & Crow: \nUpstart & Crow is a not-for-profit creative studio and literary incubator that champions writers\, readers and stories\, and the role they play in shaping our lives. SUMMARY:Women Talking Climate: End of Summer Connect
DESCRIPTION:We hold this truth to be self-evident: not only do women play an essential role in ensuring the long-term wellbeing of their communities\, especially in times of crisis\, but we cannot weather the climate impacts we face without their leadership and solutions-building. \nThat’s why we’re hosting a reoccurring event series for women and non-binary folks who work in climate — in any capacity — to mingle\, connect and celebrate each others’ work. \nOn Wednesday\, September 2 at 6p.m.\, we’re getting together for a light and breezy end-of-summer social to reconnect with familiar faces and make new connections before a busy fall season. \nWe see it as a chance to gather with the brilliant folks who make up this growing network\, hear what everyone’s been up to\, swap ideas\, and perhaps plant the seeds for a future project or two. \nCome mingle\, grab some light refreshments and spend one of summer’s last long evenings in very good company! \nThe registration fee for this event is $5. All proceeds of the event go to Upstart & Crow’s climate programming\, including writers’ residencies\, book clubs\, grants and more. Please RSVP here to reserve your spot. \nMore about Upstart & Crow: \nUpstart & Crow is a not-for-profit creative studio and literary incubator that champions writers\, readers and stories\, and the role they play in shaping our lives. SUMMARY:In Translation Book Club: Electric Shamans at the Festival of the Sun
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to Upstart & Crow’s In Translation Book Club\, a celebration of global literature and storytelling across languages and borders! This free\, bi-monthly event in our studio space introduces readers to powerful voices writing in languages other than English\, amplifying fresh perspectives\, underheard narratives and bold ideas. \nOn Wednesday\, August 26 at 6:00pm\, we’ll be discussing Electric Shamans at the Festival of the Sun\, by Mónica Ojeda\, translated by Sarah Booker. \nSet in a music festival in the slopes of Ecuador’s volcanoes\, this novel is a series of pulsing\, incantatory narratives. The story is narrated by four young people\, plus a fifth ambiguous voice… Alongside their own experiences\, they tell the story of a girl named Noa. Something’s happened to her\, something strange\, but we’re not sure what. Awash in the music of “post-apocalyptic poets”\, this is a story about birth and death\, silence and noise\, desire\, grief\, violence\, and yes\, music. All told with Ojeda’s “beautiful and abysmal voice.” \nBring yourself and an open mind to discuss the book! You do not need to have purchased the book from us to attend\, but we’ll be offering a 10% discount on the title if you do. You can do so by selecting between two ticket options here. \nMore about Upstart & Crow: \nUpstart & Crow is a not-for-profit creative studio and literary incubator that champions writers\, readers and stories\, and the role they play in shaping our lives. SUMMARY:Pauline Holdstock and Richard Kelly Kemick: Launch Party!
DESCRIPTION:Behold\, two amazing local authors have new collections out with one of our favourite Canadian indie presses\, Biblioasis. Let’s celebrate! \n\n\n\nJoin us for a night of joyful readings and conversation with Pauline Holdstock\, author of the short story What Endures\, and Richard Kelly Kemick\, author of the essay collection Decadence.\n \nWhat Endures represents Holdstock’s responses to a world evolving at terrifying speed\, exposing the absurd\, the ridiculous\, and the downright disturbing. Ranging from the eerily speculative to the flat-out comic\, her stories attempt to discover what it is that saves us\, time and again\, from despair at ourselves and our world. \nIn Decadence\, Kemick’s “accidental memoir of a sort\,” the author ranges widely through his myriad preoccupations and obsessions — volleyball\, municipal landfills\, dogs\, high school plays\, Christmas villages\, love — out of which the shape of a unique sensibility is revealed. Reminiscent of the three Davids — Rakoff\, Sedaris\, and Wallace — these essays accrete into a portrait of a man trying to make sense of a world in which there are no goddamn rules; and yet one in which every action has sometimes profound consequences. \nThis event is free\, but please RSVP here as capacity is limited. Books will be on hand for sale and signing. THANK YOU for supporting local authors! \nMore about Upstart & Crow: \nUpstart & Crow is a not-for-profit creative studio and literary incubator that champions writers\, readers and stories\, and the role they play in shaping our lives. SUMMARY:litty Book Club: Contrapposto
DESCRIPTION:The litty book club is your chance to read the books everyone’s talking about before they’re talking about them. Created by readers and for readers\, the litty book club is a bi-monthly function and a welcoming space for strong opinions and lively conversation around a curation of litty’s prospects — newly published books the litty team believe have the best chances of ending up on critics’ end of year lists. \n\n\n\nJoin litty on Monday\, July 27 to discuss Contrapposto\, by Dave Eggers. \nCricket Dib\, born on the American prairie\, has no particular prospects or ambitions until\, in grade school\, he realizes he can draw. He soon meets a girl\, Olympia Argyros\, one year older\, who is captivating and brilliant and far more worldly. Recognizing his talent\, she convinces him to deface\, with profound vulgarity\, a popular playground. Under her direction\, he does it willingly\, already in love\, and thus begins a sixty-five-year entwining between Cricket and Olympia\, encompassing friendship\, working partnership and love affair. Together they go to art school—an experience of dubious value—and then navigate the art world for the next fifty years\, together and apart. \nThis event is free to attend. You do not need to purchase the book from us to attend\, but we’ll be offering a 10% discount on the title if you do. SUMMARY:Spying on America: Book Launch
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a warm and funny evening with Bill Gaston\, author of the new “fascinating road trip” book\, Spying on America. Will Ferguson describes it as “a journey through the looking glass into that torqued version of Canada we call the United States.” \nOn a June morning in 2022\, Bill Gaston drives off the Victoria–Port Angeles ferry in a rented Dodge Charger with his two sons. Born in the U.S. but “Canadian through and through\,” Gaston is on a road trip to Tabor\, Iowa\, the town founded by his great\, great\, great-grandparents as the westernmost hub of the Underground Railroad. \nThe Gastons’ 11-day trip to Tabor and back takes them up and down and across a swathe of rural red states. Motivated equally by a curiosity to find out what really makes Americans tick and the motto ya gotta stop\, the Gastons explore the American west\, navigate unmapped dirt roads\, eat too many French fries\, overnight in clapped-out motels\, visit a Buddhist mountain monastery\, marvel at spectacular landforms\, and enjoy unlikely conversations with real Americans. \nBoth a sideways glance at contemporary American culture and a mordant yet tender account of the true meaning of ancestry\, Spying on America is an unpredictably insightful exploration of family\, Canada’s neighbour\, and the “American bald ego.” \nThis event is free\, but please register here as capacity is limited. Books will be on hand for sale and signing! \nAbout Upstart & Crow: \nLocated on Granville Island\, Upstart & Crow is a not-for-profit literary arts studio for curious readers and creative storytellers alike. We are international in our outlook\, and local in our sensibilities. We create opportunities to surface new talent and champion bold ideas through events\, workshops\, literary launches\, unique partnerships — and yes\, we also sell books! \nAccessibility: \nThe main studio of our shop is accessible for folks with mobility aids. SUMMARY:Upstart Climate Book Club: Human Nature
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to Upstart & Crow’s climate book club! Upstart & Crow’s Climate Book Club meets every second month to read and discuss works that illuminate the complexity of our shared ecological present. While some are urgent works of non-fiction\, and others are novels or hybrid texts\, each book is chosen with care for its ability to open new vantage points\, challenge easy answers\, and — we hope — fuel our collective fight for a liveable future. \n\n\n\nOn Wednesday\, July 22 at 6 p.m.\, we’ll be meeting to discuss Human Nature\, by Kate Marvel. \nHuman Nature is a biography of the Earth in nine emotions. In each chapter\, Marvel uses a different emotion to explore the science and stories behind climate change. As expected\, there is anger\, fear\, and grief — but also wonder\, hope\, and love. With her singular voice\, Marvel takes us on a soaring journey\, one filled with mythology\, physics\, witchcraft\, bad movies\, volcanoes\, Roman emperors\, sequoia groves\, and the many small miracles of nature we usually take for granted. \nThis session will be facilitated by our operations director\, Robyn Smith. \nBring yourself and an open mind to discuss the book! SUMMARY:JAWS [tiburón]: A Celebration with Two Translators
DESCRIPTION:First published in Mexico in 2015\, JAWS by Xitlalitl Rodríguez Mendoza won the Premio Nacional de Poesía Ignacio Manuel Altamirano. \nJoin us in celebrating this award-winning poetry book’s first publication in English! We’ll be joined by translators Dora Prieto and Daniela Rodríguez Chevalier\, in conversation with author Marc Perez. \nWith sharp lyricism\, documentary fragments and cinematic echoes\, this poetry collection collapses the distance between sea and office\, aquarium and classroom\, resumé and body under attack. Fierce\, darkly funny\, and formally restless\, JAWS insists on the shark not as monster\, but as mirror—swimming\, working\, alive and curious about where meaning breaks down across languages and what lurks in the waters between… \nDora Prieto and Daniela Rodríguez Chevalier places Rodríguez Mendoza’s Spanish in conversation with an English that bends\, bites\, and swims alongside it. \nBooks will be available for sale. SUMMARY:‘The Teachings of Mutton’: A BC and Yukon Book Prize Celebration
DESCRIPTION:Until now\, there has been very little written about the Coast Salish Woolly Dog\, or sqʷəmey̓ in the Hul’q’umi’num language. \nTeachings of Mutton: A Coast Salish Woolly Dog tells the story of the Woolly Dog\, and Mutton in particular. For 150 years the pelt of a dog named “Mutton” languished in a drawer that the Smithsonian\, until an amateur archivist discovered it\, almost accidentally. The Woolly Dog was a small dog bred for thousands of years for its woolly fibres\, which were woven into traditional blankets\, robes\, and regalia. The dogs were carefully protected by the Coast Salish peoples\, but by the 1900s the Woolly Dog had become so rare it is now considered extinct. \nTeachings of Mutton is co-authored by weavers\, Knowledge Keepers\, and Elders combining perspectives from Musqueam\, Squamish\, Stó:lō\, Suquamish\, Cowichan\, Katzie\, Snuneymuxw\, and Skokomish cultures with narratives of science\, post-contact history\, and the lasting and devastating impacts of colonization. Binding it all together is Mutton’s story—a tale of research\, reawakening\, and resurgence. \nJoin us on June 25 for an event with two of the book’s authors\, Liz Hammond-Kaarremaa\, researcher and master spinner\, and Debra Sparrow\, author and Musqueam weaver\, to learn more about Mutton\, and the history of the Coast Salish Woolly Dog. SUMMARY:The Art of Looking Back: Book Launch
DESCRIPTION:Join us in launching Theresa Kishkan’s new memoir\, The Art of Looking Back\, about reclaiming her image and voice and dismantling the male gaze that once framed her. \nAt 23\, Theresa Kishkan met an artist who became obsessed with her. She was young\, she was flattered\, and the situation quickly overwhelmed her. He drew and painted her for a few months\, after which she went away for a year. When she returned\, she was determined not to resume the relationship. \nBut the artist made contact with her after the birth of her first child and became a family friend\, bringing gifts of paintings. Those images hung in Theresa’s home\, and one in particular reminded her almost daily of her younger self\, in ways both positive and not so much. She avoided looking too closely at his images of her and at his long\, passionate and often troubling letters. \nDecades later\, while sorting old correspondence\, she was taken back to those early days and began\, at last\, to write about her relationship with the now-deceased artist. The Art of Looking Back is a meditation on the male gaze\, on reclaiming one’s younger self\, and on agency: how we lose it\, how we find it again. This poetic memoir asks questions about older men and younger women and girls\, and the persistence of that dynamic in art. \nBooks will be available for sale and signing. RSVP here to reserve your spot. \nMore about Upstart & Crow: \nUpstart & Crow is a not-for-profit creative studio and literary incubator that champions writers\, readers and stories\, and the role they play in shaping our lives. SUMMARY:Upstart In Translation Book Club: Beckomberga
\n\n\n\nOn Wednesday\, June 10 at 6:00pm\, we’ll be discussing Beckomberga\, by Sara Stridsberg\, translated by Deborah Bragan-Turner. \nTranslated from Swedish\, this is an achingly blue novel about a woman who witnesses her father’s life spent almost entirely within the confines of Beckomberga\, a psychiatric hospital. But more than that\, it’s a beautifully restrained\, poetic contemplation on distance — between people\, between the sane and the insane\, living and dead. As Stridsberg writes\, “It is our long night\, Jim’s and mine\, opening up beneath me like the dark vault of heaven.” \nBring yourself and an open mind to discuss the book! SUMMARY:Women Talking Climate: Living Labs Workshop
DESCRIPTION:“Living Labs are user-centered\, open-innovation ecosystems based on a systematic user co-creation approach\, integrating research and innovation processes in real-life communities and settings.” \nWe hold this truth to be self-evident: not only do women play an essential role in ensuring the long-term wellbeing of their communities\, especially in times of crisis\, but we cannot weather the climate impacts we face without their leadership and solutions-building. \nThat’s why we’re hosting an informal\, reoccurring event series for women and non-binary folks who work in climate — in any capacity — to mingle\, connect and celebrate each others’ work. \nOn Thursday\, June 4 at 6p.m.\, Women Talking Climate is hosting its first hands-on workshop to give you a taste of the European model of Living Labs and learn some of their practical applications in order to engage citizens and civil society\, policymakers\, businesses\, non-profits\, and academia alike when it comes to solving complex\, multi-faceted problems. \nThis 2.5 hour event will include climate-focused icebreakers; place-base “exploring” to enhance place-based education and engage with the current environment; and hands-on brainstorming sessions using collaborative and knowledge sharing tactics\, helping to strategize big picture solutions for some of these ongoing climate challenges. \nWe ask that you bring your burning climate questions or topics\, your desire to learn\, and your problem-solving hats: we’re excited to see what you can take away from this unique session! \nThe registration fee for this event is $5. Your admission to the event will include a structured 2.5-hour expert-led session\, non-alcoholic beverages\, and light snacks. Please RSVP here to reserve your spot. If you are experiencing financial barriers\, please email us at hello[@]upstartandcrow.com for one of our scholarship spots. \nMore about Upstart & Crow: \nUpstart & Crow is a not-for-profit creative studio and literary incubator that champions writers\, readers and stories\, and the role they play in shaping our lives. SUMMARY:Pitch Me Maybe: A Speed-Pitch Social for Science Stories
DESCRIPTION:Scientists! Have you ever wanted your research to travel beyond the page or the lab? \nJoin us on Wednesday\, June 3 at 6:30 p.m. for a fast-paced\, experimental evening designed to explore exactly that. Inspired by speed-dating\, this event pairs scientists or researchers with our crew of journalists for a series of rapid\, one-on-one exchanges. \nAcross multiple six-minute one-on-one rounds with journalists\, you’ll pitch the heart of your work and the questions that drive you. SUMMARY:litty Book Club: Lázár
\n\n\n\nJoin litty on Monday\, June 1 to discuss Lázár by Nelio Biedermann. \nHailed by the New York Times as “virtuosic… riveting… audacious\,” this debut is a gothic saga capturing the rise and fall of an aristocratic Hungarian family against the backdrop of two world wars. At the turn of the 20th century\, a child is born to the Lázárs. His birth brings to light the secrets\, affairs\, and peculiar otherworldly happenings that plague his family. Through one intergenerational epic\, Biedermann paints a portrait of a nation. \nThis event is free to attend. You do not need to purchase the book from us to attend\, but we’ll be offering a 10% discount on the title if you do. You can do so by selecting between two ticket options here. \nMore about litty: \nFounded by Hamish Clark\, Mark Perez and Sarchen Starke\, litty.ca gathers the most trusted end-of-year book lists from critics\, publishers\, and reviewers\, then brings them together in one place. No endless scrolling — just the books worth your time\, all neatly in one spot. \nMore about Upstart & Crow: \nUpstart & Crow is a not-for-profit creative studio and literary incubator that champions writers\, readers and stories\, and the role they play in shaping our lives. SUMMARY:The Alchemy of Paradise: Book Launch
DESCRIPTION:Join us in celebrating the launch of the luminous new novel The Alchemy of Paradise by author Susannah M. Smith\, out May 12 with Invisible Publishing. Smith will be in conversation with Krisztina Laszlo\, a Rare Books and Special Collections Archivist at UBC. \nIn The Alchemy of Paradise\, a curator confronts grief\, loss\, and mortality by arranging the fragments of her life — objects\, memories\, impressions — into a fragile order. Set in contemporary England\, with Venice shimmering at its core\, the novel follows her attempt to preserve what might otherwise vanish\, shaping a collection that makes survival possible. When order fails to yield meaning\, she turns to the alchemical\, where matter shifts into metaphor and loss becomes transformation. \nA novel of ideas told through poetic essays and reflections\, The Alchemy of Paradise explores the tension between collecting and transmuting\, order and disorder. In the spirit of Walter Benjamin’s collections\, and in dialogue with writers like W.G. Sebald\, Patti Smith and Leanne Shapton\, it meditates on the ways that art and imagination allow us to chart personal maps through the universal yet individual territories of loss.
