SUMMARY:‘Words that Last’: A Book Launch with Keiko Honda
DESCRIPTION:Join Keiko Honda to celebrate the launch of her third memoir\, Words that Last\, a reflective essay collection that sees Honda navigate loss\, aging\, and solitude while rediscovering meaning through Japanese literary traditions. Honda will be joined in conversation by Brenda Miller\, an acclaimed American writer and one of the most influential contemporary figures in creative nonfiction. \nIn Words that Last\, Honda writes from a particular threshold: her daughter’s room stands empty\, her father’s voice thins across long-distance calls\, her mother speaks to her six times daily though she’s been dead for six years. Living alone in Vancouver with her cat Pumpkin\, she finds herself between languages\, between countries\, between the body she had and the body she inhabits now. \nHonda turns to the Japanese poets who shaped her before she knew what poetry was: Matsuo Bashō\, who found karumi (lightness) on swollen feet; Sei Shōnagon\, who practiced okashi (delighted noticing) a millennium ago. Through concepts like mono no aware (the exquisite ache of impermanence) and yohaku (the eloquence of empty space)\, Honda excavates a way of attending to the world that her Western training had obscured. \nWhat emerges is something rare: a practice of awareness that treats everyday objects—rain chains\, teacups\, her daughter’s silence\, the drivers who hold doors—as literature itself. Each essay becomes what the Japanese call zuihitsu: following the brush wherever it leads\, touching experience lightly enough to let it remain itself. \nThis event is free\, but please RSVP here as capacity is limited. Books will be on hand for sale and signing. \nMore about the author: \nDr. Keiko Honda is a writer\, former cancer epidemiologist\, and founder of the Vancouver Arts Colloquium Society. Writing from her wheelchair\, she explores the intersections of civic life\, art\, and embodied observation. She teaches the aesthetics of co-creation and zuihitsu at Simon Fraser University. Recognized with the 2025 King Charles III Coronation Medal\, she is the author of Accidental Blooms\, Hidden Flowers\, The Broken Map Home\, and Words That Last. Learn more about her work here. \nMore about the co-speaker: \nBrenda Miller’s new hybrid collection\, Love You\, Bye: A Daughter’s Journey in Essays and Poems\, is out from Skinner House Books. She is the author of six additional essay collections\, including A Braided Heart: Essays on Writing and Form\, and An Earlier Life\, winner of the Washington State Book Award for Memoir. Her work has received seven Pushcart Prizes. She co-authored\, with Holly J. Hughes\, The Pen and the Bell: Mindful Writing in a Busy World\, and\, with Suzanne Paola\, Tell It Slant: Creating\, Refining\, and Publishing Creative Nonfiction\, now in its third edition. She coined the term “Hermit Crab Essay.” Learn more about her work here. \nMore about Upstart & Crow: \nUpstart & Crow is a not-for-profit creative studio and literary incubator that champions writers\, readers and stories\, and the role they play in shaping our lives. SUMMARY:An (Early) Evening with Amanda Peters
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a warm evening with the wonderful novelist Amanda Peters\, whose new book The Birthing Tree is already an instant national bestseller. Peters will be in conversation with author Carleigh Baker. This event is free\, but please RSVP here as capacity is limited and spaces will fill quickly! \nThe Birthing Tree is a novel of family\, legacy and secrets. In 1955\, Aliet’s mother dies in childbirth beneath the birthing tree\, a large old oak where Indigenous women have been giving birth for longer than anyone can remember. Aliet’s grandmother\, the local midwife\, has assisted in the successful births of babies there for decades. Yet on that fateful day tragedy strikes\, and it’s her own daughter\, Maggie\, who dies under her care. \nAfter her mother’s death\, Aliet is raised by her grandmother and becomes an apprentice to her knowledge of midwifery and Indigenous medicine. At the base of the birthing tree\, Aliet becomes the keeper of sacred knowledge\, educated so that she may\, one day\, carry on these traditional practices. Yet\, when Aliet grows older\, she unexpectedly turns away from her grandmother\, her community and all that she’s learned. \nYears later\, after her grandmother dies\, Aliet returns home to a crumbling house and the memories she thought she’d outrun: the love and loss that shaped her young life; the teachings of her grandmother; and the mystery of her own bloodline. She also realizes that to truly start her life over again\, she must finally come to terms with a long-held family secret and the unresolved heartbreak and grief of her past. \nCopies of The Birthing Tree and The Berry Pickers will be available for sale and signing. \nAbout Upstart & Crow: \nUpstart & Crow is a not-for-profit creative studio and literary incubator that champions writers\, readers and stories\, and the role they play in shaping our lives. SUMMARY:KEEP GOING: A Workshop for Parent-Writers with Suzannah Showler
DESCRIPTION:How do you make space for creative work when your time\, brain\, and access to privacy have been radically restructured? This is a practical workshop for writers whose work has been upended\, paused\, or otherwise rearranged by parenthood. You can expect to come away with a renewed sense of purpose in your work\, a wider community of writers in the same boat\, and a concrete plan to hatch a “micro-residency” in your own life. \nSession 1 (Saturday\, October 24 at 9am): Theory \nWe’ll discuss: what conditions are necessary for creative work to thrive? You’ll be guided through an inventory of how you work\, what you have\, what you need\, and what could potentially change. This will be both a personal reflective exercise and a collective effort: we’ll share resources\, ideas\, and strategies to help keep one another writing. \nYou’ll conclude by making concrete plans for a “micro-residency”: a short-term re-configuration of your writing practice intended to expand\, intensify\, or shift your work on a project. \nSession 2 (Saturday\, October 31 at 9am): Praxis \nWe’ll come together in the Upstart & Crow studio space as co-writers-in-residence. There will be time to share your micro-residency plan for feedback and support\, and you’ll also have the option to relax and do some creative work on your own. \nThis is a two-part workshop! Your single ticket covers both sessions (Oct 24 & Oct 31). If you cannot attend both\, please email to let us know. The registration fee for this event is $10. All proceeds of the event go to Upstart & Crow’s non-profit programming\, including writer residencies\, book clubs\, grants and more. RSVP here. \nMore about Upstart & Crow: \nUpstart & Crow is a not-for-profit creative studio and literary incubator that champions writers\, readers and stories\, and the role they play in shaping our lives. SUMMARY:In Translation Book Club: The Song of Stork and Dromedary
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to Upstart & Crow’s In Translation Book Club\, a celebration of global literature and storytelling across languages and borders! This free\, bi-monthly event in our studio space introduces readers to powerful voices writing in languages other than English\, amplifying fresh perspectives\, underheard narratives and bold ideas. \n\n\nOn Wednesday\, October 28 at 6:00pm\, we’ll be discussing The Song of Stork and Dromedary\, by Anjet Daanje\, translated by David McKay. \nFall is just around the corner… the perfect time to dive into this 700-page ‘gothic’ tome. Heralded as “the best Dutch novel of the century\,” it’s loosely inspired by the life (and afterlives) of Emily Brontë. We’re introduced to a young woman named Eliza who\, during her short life\, publishes a masterpiece. What follows is a series of interlocking narratives\, each growing in intensity\, as those who come in contact with her book seem to lose their minds… It’s a meta exploration on the act of writing\, the pursuit of The Masterpiece\, and what it means to work in a formidable artistic lineage — “the gothic.” \nBring yourself and an open mind to discuss the book! You do not need to have purchased the book from us to attend\, but we’ll be offering a 10% discount on the title if you do. You can do so by selecting between two ticket options here. \nMore about Upstart & Crow: \nUpstart & Crow is a not-for-profit creative studio and literary incubator that champions writers\, readers and stories\, and the role they play in shaping our lives.
