SUMMARY:A Sunday Morning with ‘Crooked Cross’ and Persephone Books
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an online chat with Francesca Beauman\, publisher of the U.K.-based Persephone Books\, about the press’s forthcoming book — the forgotten classic Crooked Cross by Sally Carson\, “a richly detailed\, page-turning and remarkably prescient account of the rise of the Nazi regime in Germany and its devastating impact on the lives of the fictional Kluger family.” \nIt couldn’t be a more important time to revisit the text\, says Beauman. “To have the opportunity to rescue this literary masterpiece from being entirely lost is an immense privilege\,” she says. “As the lessons history has taught us seem worryingly close to being forgotten\, now feels like the right time to share it with the world.” \nIn this Sunday morning chat with Upstart & Crow founder Zoe Grams\, Beauman will share about the decision to republish Carson’s long-lost text\, and what else is happening for Persephone Books in the year ahead. \nDon’t miss this conversation with one of the literary world’s most respected and innovative publishers! To reserve your copy of Crooked Cross\, email us at hello[at]upstartandcrow.com. SUMMARY:Translator for a Night: A Workshop with Janet Hong
DESCRIPTION:Translation\, often considered an act of literary alchemy\, allows beloved texts to live fully in new linguistic and cultural spaces. Yet despite its essential role in the literary world\, it’s an art form that many of us who speak only one language have never experienced first-hand.\n \nWhat if you could step into the shoes of a translator for one night? Join us on Tuesday\, March 11 at 6:30 PM for an immersive translation workshop in which you’ll discover the techniques and magic of translating texts… whether you know one language or five. \nLed by renowned translator\, Janet Hong\, this hands-on workshop offers an introduction to the art and practice of translation: how it works\, why it matters\, and the creative decisions that shape a text’s journey from one language to another. You will work with annotated excerpts from renowned literary works in French\, Spanish\, or German to craft your own English translations—which we’ll then discuss and compare to the published English. Together\, we’ll reflect on the interpretive choices that contribute to the act of translation\, uncovering the many nuances between fidelity and creativity that inform this vital art. \nTo support our non-profit programming and to help us cover costs\, this workshop is $10 . If you are experiencing barriers to attend\, please reach out over email — we are happy to provide you with one of our reserved free-by-donation tickets. This workshop is accessible to monolingual participants. No prior knowledge of another language is required. \nWe have limited seating\, so please reserve your spot here! \n \nMore about Upstart & Crow: \nUpstart & Crow is a not-for-profit creative studio and literary incubator that champions writers\, readers and stories\, and the role they play in shaping our lives. SUMMARY:Windows as Metaphor: A Poetry Workshop with Doretta Lau & Holly Flauto
DESCRIPTION:How might windows serve as a dual metaphor—a lens to the outside world and a mirror reflecting the self? \nJoin writers Doretta Lau and Holly Flauto on Saturday\, March 1 at 9am for an immersive poetry workshop on perspective\, reflection\, and transformation. \nThe barriers we pass through\, both in body and in metaphor\, can be destabilizing. But what if we lingered in these midway spaces? In this workshop\, participants will create poems based on a series of guided writing activities exploring the self as viewed through glass and frame. Refine your craft\, express your creativity\, and write in community. \nThis free-or-by-donation workshop is designed for everyone\, whether you’re a seasoned poet looking to refine your craft or a newcomer curious about exploring the world of poetry. Paper and writing utensils will be provided. Space is limited so please register to reserve your spot! \n \nMore about the facilitating poets: \nDoretta Lau started watching horror movies at age nine and sketch comedy at eleven\, which was probably why she ended up completing an MFA in Writing at Columbia University. The Atlantic named her short story collection\, How Does a Single Blade of Grass Thank the Sun?\, as a best book of 2014. The title story was shortlisted for the 2013 Writers’ Trust McClelland & Stewart Journey Prize. Her forthcoming novel We Are Underlings is about a dysfunctional workplace struggling to open a theme park that celebrates death. She is developing a television show for FX based on this book with Pulitzer Prize–winning writer Eboni Booth. \nHolly Flauto lives and writes on the traditional\, ancestral and stolen territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm\, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh and Selilwitulh Nations. Her book of poetry\, Permission to Settle\, one of CBC Books Best Canadian Poetry of 2024\, fills in the blanks of the application for Permanent Residency with a series of memoir-based poems that investigate the implicit biases in the colonial system of boxes and check marks that still seek to categorize “the other” and to harness it in the face of reconciliation. Holly grew up moving between the US and South America; she immigrated to Canada in 2008. Holly teaches writing in the English department at Capilano University. \n \nMore about Upstart & Crow: \nUpstart & Crow is a not-for-profit creative studio and literary incubator that champions writers\, readers and stories\, and the role they play in shaping our lives. SUMMARY:Write/Draw: An Integrated Workshop on Noticing
DESCRIPTION:The Write/Draw workshop series is a powerful tool for deepening your creative practice — whether that’s writing\, drawing or both. Write/Draw shifts focus from creating a “finished” work of art product to fostering an open\, observant mindset. \nAt the heart of the workshops is the idea of “noticing what we notice\,” where drawing trains the eye to see and writing further illuminates the thoughts and reactions that surface. This approach transforms routine objects and experiences into avenues for profound awareness and connection\, creating a dialog between what’s seen and felt. By pairing visual and written reflection\, participants uncover insights that might otherwise remain hidden\, resulting in an alchemy of greater creativity\, discovery\, and personal growth. \nLed by artist Louise Phillips\, you’ll be guided through a series of exercises in drawing and writing. Although the practice is easy\, our discoveries can be profound. You’ll take away a tool of discovery you can enjoy using again and again. \nLouise’s practice began with her daily study of an ordinary paintbrush\, drawing it in unique ways over several months and then writing about each experience. This consistent practice revealed new insights into both her art and herself\, changing her approach to teaching by prioritizing curiosity and observation. \nNo prior artistic or literary experience is required. \nThis event is free by donation. Reserve your tickets here! Please choose between our two seating options: Sunday\, January 19 from 9-11am or Sunday\, January 26 from 9-11am. \nMore about Upstart & Crow: \nLocated on Granville Island\, Upstart & Crow is a not-for-profit literary arts studio for curious readers and creative storytellers alike. We are international in our outlook\, and local in our sensibilities. We create opportunities to surface new talent and champion bold ideas through events\, workshops\, literary launches\, unique partnerships — and yes\, we also sell books! \nHealth precautions: \nWe want this event to be safe for all. Masks are welcome\, though we won’t enforce them. We hope that folks who come will be vaccinated and boosted and will stay home if they feel ill. \nAccessibility: \nThe main studio of our shop is accessible for folks with mobility aids. SUMMARY:Cemeteries for the Future: A Single-Page Zine Workshop
DESCRIPTION:If the tombstones of your ancestors (chosen or otherwise) asked questions\, what would they be? \nJoin us on Thursday\, January 16th at 6:30PM for an introductory workshop on zine-making! \nIn this workshop we’ll use the single-page zine to commemorate our big and little griefs and also those we don’t yet know the shape of (grief for the state of the world\, grief for the death of a past self or belief\, for the death of a dream\, a fear\, a tradition\, a space/place/mindset we can no longer visit\, for the death of a dear one\, etc.) by reimagining the tombstone as a monument that can speak back –– a monument that can name our hurt but also metabolize it into resistance. \nWe will also explore our different relationships to customs and spaces of memorial and ask what we might still desire from our cemeteries –– what commemorations are missing? How might cemeteries become more integrated into our daily lives? What kinds of community organizing could emerge from such a space? Are there cemeteries we wish we could visit but no longer have access to? What does it mean to be buried in land? For those of us who are settlers\, what does it mean to be buried in stolen land? These are just a few of the many questions we’ll explore in this workshop. \nMore about Jess Goldman: Jess Goldman is an anti-Zionist Jewish writer\, comics artist\, and amateur puppeteer based on the traditional\, unceded lands of the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh\, Səlilwətaɬ\, and Mʷməθkʷəy̓əm Nations. Their writing has been published in Maisonneuve\, the CBC and Room Magazine. A graduate of UBC’s MFA in Creative Writing Program\, their writing explores that sweet spot where Yiddishkayt and queer culture joyfully collide. \nThis event is free by donation. SUMMARY:Homing: Vancouver Launch
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Saturday\, Nov. 30 at 6:30 p.m. to launch Homing\, Alice Irene Whittaker’s powerful debut memoir that captures her profound journey from a commuter-lifestyle to a refuge in the woods. \nOverwhelmed by obsessive productivity and environmental anxiety\, recovering perfectionist Alice Irene Whittaker and her family decide to retreat to a cabin in the woods. Surrounded by creek\, forest\, and woodland animals\, Alice Irene begins a lifelong journey of repairing her fractured relationship with both herself and the natural world. She asks herself\, “How can I take care of the Earth if I don’t know how to take care of myself?” \nHer quest takes her to meet a renowned economist-rancher in Colorado\, to stand at the side of a runway at a sustainable fashion show in Portland\, and to witness firsthand rewilding of wolves in Yellowstone. She interviews and learns from dozens of people who are building homes\, growing food\, making clothes\, raising families\, and living their lives in regenerative ways. \nSearching for the spaces between the sorrow of wildfires and the beauty of wildflowers\, Homing is a lyrical memoir about moving from a life of despair to a life of care. \nThis event is free\, but please register at our Eventbrite to let us know you’re coming! \nMore about Upstart & Crow: \nLocated on Granville Island\, Upstart & Crow is a not-for-profit literary arts studio for curious readers and creative storytellers alike. SUMMARY:A Sunday Morning with Yuri Herrera
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a Found in Translation discussion on Sunday\, Nov. 3 at 10am PDT with Yuri Herrera about history\, justice\, literature… and how 19th-century New Orleans can help us understand the world we live in. \n“Told in Herrera’s typically sparkling\, form-exploding language\, this one is screaming ‘modern epic.’” — Brittany Allen\, Literary Hub \nA master mesmerizer of both prose and plot\, Yuri Herrera is one of Upstart & Crow’s literary heroes\, and we’re thrilled to present a conversation with him about his latest work: Season of the Swamp (translated from the Spanish by Lisa Dillman). \nThis is a magnificent work of speculative history centring a young exile named Benito Juárez\, who disembarks at a fetid port city at the edge of a swamp. Years later\, he will become the first indigenous head of state in the postcolonial Americas\, but now he is as anonymous and invisible as any other migrant to the roiling and alluring city of New Orleans. \nHerrera imagines the 18 months Juárez spent in the city in 1853. In New Orleans\, amidst the carnivalesque reality and the grotesque trafficking of human beings\, Juárez tries to shape his future. Publisher’s Weekly describes the novel as “glorious and messy as the best New Orleans gumbo\,” and celebrates Herrera’s vivid depiction of the chaos of Mardi Gras. “It’s a triumph.” \nReserve your ticket here. \nMore about Upstart & Crow: \nLocated on Granville Island\, Upstart & Crow is a literary arts studio for curious readers and creative storytellers alike. SUMMARY:Ukrainian Voices: A Talk with Lyuba Yakimchuk
DESCRIPTION:It’s our third Ukrainian Voices event! Join us for an online conversation on Sunday\, October 27 at 10 AM. Our special guests will include Lyuba Yakimchuk—the award-winning Ukrainian poet\, playwright\, and screenwriter\, renowned for her poem collections such as Apricots of Donbas—in conversation with Amelia Glaser\, distinguished scholar\, translator\, and author. \nApricots of Donbas is a phenomenal collection of poetry\, told through the eyes of a woman who observes her homeland being ravaged by war. Silently\, she strives to understand the chaos that surrounds her. \nA sense of playfulness and repetition (a futuristic Ukrainian poetic style) characterizes Yakimchuk’s poetry. Conversations will address this unique voice and how language transforms during war. How does contrast—the harshness of coal and the delicate beauty of apricot blossoms—convey a vital sense of the Donbas region? \nThis event is part of Senchenko’s Ukrainian Day programming\, in partnership with the Maple Hope Foundation\, a Canadian not-for-profit organization committed to helping people suffering from the war in Ukraine\, and the Upstart & Crow Literary Arts Society. \nThis event is taking place online and is free\, but please reserve your spot here! \n \nMore about Upstart & Crow: \nLocated on Granville Island\, Upstart & Crow is a literary arts studio for curious readers and creative storytellers alike. SUMMARY:An Evening with Richard Kelly Kemick and Damian Tarnopolsky
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Tuesday\, Aug. 27 at 7 p.m. for readings and chats with Richard Kelly Kemick and Damian Tarnopolsky\, the authors of two brand-new story collections published by two incredible Canadian presses. \nKemick’s book\, Hello\, Horse\, is a collection of taut\, stylish stories that take on big moral questions from surprising perspectives. As Kirkus Reviews wrote\, “the tales here mix whimsy\, weirdness\, lust\, and Canadian politics.” It is published by Biblioasis. \nTarnopolsky’s book\, Every Night I Dream I’m a Monk\, Every Night I Dream I’m a Monster\, is seriously surreal. Profanity (the ‘monster’ part) and sanctity (the ‘monk’ part) are married in this collection\, as the author explores universal themes of the self\, death\, and art\, grounding them in real family drama and messy relationships. It is published by Freehand Books. \nThe authors will each read from their collections and then host an informal Q&A period. Books will be available for purchase and signing. This is a free event\, but please register for your spot at our Eventbrite\, as capacity is limited. Thank you for supporting independent publishers! \nAbout the authors: \nRichard Kelly Kemick is an award-winning poet\, journalist\, and fiction writer. His limited series podcast\, Natural Life\, is an intimate and unexpectedly honest documentary on his cousin\, who is serving a life sentence without parole in Michigan. He is the recipient of multiple awards including two National Magazine Awards and the Writers’ Guild of Alberta’s 2019 Award for Best Short Story. He lives in Rossland\, B.C. \nDamian Tarnopolsky is a writer\, editor\, and teacher\, whose novel Goya’s Dog was shortlisted for the Amazon First Novel Award and the Commonwealth Writers’ Prize for Best Book (Canada/Caribbean). His short fiction has appeared in The Puritan\, The Antigonish Review\, Prairie Fire\, subTerrain\, Audeamus\, and elsewhere\, and has twice been nominated for the Journey Prize\, as well as the CBC Literary Award. SUMMARY:The Shape of You: A Hermit Crab Writing Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Want to work on your personal story with an accomplished novelist? Join us on Wednesday\, August 14 at 6:30 p.m. for a “hermit crab” style mental health writing workshop with the wonderful Leanne Toshiko Simpson. \nHermit crab essays have emerged as exciting and generative containers for personal storytelling over the past two decades. As their popularity has grown\, these creative pieces have taken the shape of family recipes\, instructional manuals\, obituaries and other familiar forms\, offering a protective space to begin the writing process and a chance to reimagine the cultural expectations of each shape. \nFor workshop facilitator Leanne\, narrating her life has been challenging in that she is often writing emotionally difficult stories AND stories that may be less recognizable for those who don’t share her lived experience. She finds that working within a “shell” — as she did in her debut novel\, Never Been Better\, which uses the shape of a romantic comedy to explore mental illness — helps her understand and question the “rules of the game\,” whether it’s the guiding structures of family\, relationships\, illness or even just the choreography of going on a date. It also makes for a very fun reading experience for those outside the story! \nThis writing workshop is open to anyone trying to tell a “difficult” story in a creative and nonlinear way (fiction or nonfiction). No writing experience required\, just life experience that you’re interested in reframing creatively. There will be peer support available on site for anyone who needs it\, and proceeds from registration will be donated to Foundry\, a local youth mental health organization. \nTwenty spots available. RSVP here. \nAbout the facilitator: \nLeanne Toshiko Simpson is a mixed-race Yonsei writer\, educator and psychiatric survivor from Toronto. She loves writing joyful\, messy\, laugh-out-loud stories about living with mental illness\, and the moments of hope that help us get out of bed day after day. Leanne is a graduate of UTSC Creative Writing and the University of Guelph’s MFA\, and is currently completing an EdD in Social Justice Education at the University of Toronto. She teaches seminars in disability arts and BIPOC literature at Trinity College and is a co-founder of Mata Ashita\, a national writing circle for Nikkei communities. Named Scarborough’s Emerging Writer in 2016 and nominated for the Journey Prize in 2019\, Leanne also launched a reflective writing program at Canada’s largest mental health centre after being hospitalized for bipolar disorder. Her debut novel Never Been Better has been highlighted by CBC Q\, Good Morning America\, Electric Literature\, The Toronto Star and others.\n \nAbout the peer support facilitator: \nNico Koyanagi is a mixed-race Yonsei who lives in Nogojiwanong on Michi Saagiig Nishnaabeg territory. She is a community organizer\, facilitator\, mediator\, and peer supporter who centres connection and healing in all her work. She holds an MSW from York University and works with various community organizations including OPIRG Peterborough\, Mata Ashita: An Intergenerational Writing Circle for Japanese Canadians\, and Tsuru for Solidarity\, a nonviolent\, direct action project of Japanese American social justice advocates. \nMore about Upstart & Crow: \nLocated on Granville Island\, Upstart & Crow is a literary arts studio for curious readers and creative storytellers alike. SUMMARY:The Outlier: Book Launch
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Tuesday\, Aug. 13 at 7 p.m. for the Vancouver launch of The Outlier\, an audaciously twisty psychological thriller by award-winning writer Elisabeth Eaves published by Random House. Eaves will be in conversation with journalist Peg Fong. \nCate Winter is a wildly successful neuroscientist and entrepreneur who has invented a cure for Alzheimer’s that will improve the lives of millions. On the verge of selling her biotech company for an obscene sum\, she is also about to become very rich. But Cate has a secret that keeps her deeply uneasy about everything she is and does: she grew up at the Cleckley Institute\, a treatment facility for the rehabilitation of psychopathic children. And\, as far as she knows\, she is the institute’s only success: all of her peers have become thwarted\, maladjusted or even criminal adults. \nThen Cate discovers the existence of another ex-patient and outlier who might prove that her success isn’t a fluke. He has not only stayed out of jail\, but he’s made a mark in business and science. Though his identity is confidential\, she breaks the rules and drops everything to track him down. And when she finds him\, living under an assumed name in Baja California\, she is immediately obsessed. Like her\, he is driven and brilliant\, an innovator willing to do what it takes to perfect a new energy technology that will stop global warming. Here\, at last\, is her mirror\, her ultimate collaborator\, the possible answer to the enigma of her nature. \nBut in the wake of a mysterious death\, Cate can’t avoid suspecting him. If he is involved\, do his ends justify his means? Ruthless herself\, she’s about to find out whether there are any moral lines she won’t cross. \nJoin us in celebrating this exciting new thriller! Books will be available for purchase and signing. This is a free event\, but please register for your spot at our Eventbrite\, as capacity is limited. \nAbout the author: \nElisabeth Eaves is a debut novelist and an award-winning travel writer and journalist who has covered nuclear weapons\, biological threats and climate change for publications including The New Yorker\, Forbes\, and the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists. She is the author of two critically acclaimed nonfiction books: Wanderlust: A Love Affair with Five Continents\, which the New York Times Book Review called “a heady\, headlong chronicle of a decade and a half spent adrift” and declared a Notable Book; and Bare: The Naked Truth About Stripping\, which The Washington Post called “a first-rate\, first-person work of social anthropology.” Born and raised in Vancouver\, Elisabeth lives with her husband in Seattle. \nAbout the moderator: \nPeg Fong is a journalist\, educator\, author and podcaster. Her podcast Alone Together: A Curious Exploration of Loneliness is heard in more than 30 countries\, and the YA book based on research and interviews from the show was published in March 2024 by Orca Book. \nMore about Upstart & Crow: \nLocated on Granville Island\, Upstart & Crow is a literary arts studio for curious readers and creative storytellers alike. SUMMARY:An Evening with Nisha Patel
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Monday\, June 24 at 7 p.m. as we welcome the wonderful author and former Canadian Poetry Slam champion\, Nisha Patel\, for an evening conversation about poetry\, process\, and writing from the self. \nPatel’s new work\, A Fate Worse than Death\, is a stunning poetic investigation of the worthiness of disabled life as told through Patel’s evaluation of her own medical records over the course of a decade. \nLiving with treatment-resistant diabetes\, bipolar disorder\, generalized anxiety disorder and complex chronic pain\, Patel reveals how her multiple disabilities intertwine with her day-to-day life\, even when care and treatments are not available. As she works through bouts of illness\, she shows how poetry gives her a way to resist the sway of medical hegemony and instead offer complex accounts of pain\, sickness\, and anger — but also love. \nPatel will be in conversation with Upstart & Crow staffer Franz Seachel\, a fellow poet. Books will be available for sale and signing. This event is free\, but please register for your spot on our Eventbrite\, as capacity is limited. \nAbout the author: \nNisha Patel is the Poet Laureate Emeritus of the City of Edmonton. Patel lives and writes from her home in Edmonton\, Alberta\, with her partner\, fellow author and intellectual ally Matthew James Weigel.
