SUMMARY:An Evening with Richard Kelly Kemick and Damian Tarnopolsky
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Tuesday\, Aug. 27 at 7 p.m. for readings and chats with Richard Kelly Kemick and Damian Tarnopolsky\, the authors of two brand-new story collections published by two incredible Canadian presses. \nKemick’s book\, Hello\, Horse\, is a collection of taut\, stylish stories that take on big moral questions from surprising perspectives. As Kirkus Reviews wrote\, “the tales here mix whimsy\, weirdness\, lust\, and Canadian politics.” It is published by Biblioasis. \nTarnopolsky’s book\, Every Night I Dream I’m a Monk\, Every Night I Dream I’m a Monster\, is seriously surreal. Profanity (the ‘monster’ part) and sanctity (the ‘monk’ part) are married in this collection\, as the author explores universal themes of the self\, death\, and art\, grounding them in real family drama and messy relationships. It is published by Freehand Books. \nThe authors will each read from their collections and then host an informal Q&A period. Books will be available for purchase and signing. This is a free event\, but please register for your spot at our Eventbrite\, as capacity is limited. Thank you for supporting independent publishers! \nAbout the authors: \nRichard Kelly Kemick is an award-winning poet\, journalist\, and fiction writer. His limited series podcast\, Natural Life\, is an intimate and unexpectedly honest documentary on his cousin\, who is serving a life sentence without parole in Michigan. He is the author of I Am Herod\, which takes readers undercover at one of the world’s largest religious events\, and Caribou Run\, a collection of poetry. He is the recipient of multiple awards including two National Magazine Awards and the Writers’ Guild of Alberta’s 2019 Award for Best Short Story. He lives in Rossland\, B.C. \nDamian Tarnopolsky is a writer\, editor\, and teacher\, whose novel Goya’s Dog was shortlisted for the Amazon First Novel Award and the Commonwealth Writers’ Prize for Best Book (Canada/Caribbean). His short fiction has appeared in The Puritan\, The Antigonish Review\, Prairie Fire\, subTerrain\, Audeamus\, and elsewhere\, and has twice been nominated for the Journey Prize\, as well as the CBC Literary Award. He lives in Toronto. \nMore about Upstart & Crow: \nLocated on Granville Island\, Upstart & Crow is a literary arts studio for curious readers and creative storytellers alike. We are international in our outlook\, and local in our sensibilities. We create opportunities to surface new talent and champion bold ideas through events\, workshops\, literary launches\, unique partnerships — and yes\, we also sell books! \nHealth precautions: \nWe want this event to be safe for all. Masks are welcome\, though we won’t enforce them. We hope that folks who come will be vaccinated and boosted and will stay home if they feel ill. \nAccessibility: \nThe main studio of our shop is accessible for folks with mobility aids. There is a washroom on the main floor available for attendees. \nQuestions: hello@upstartandcrow.com.

SUMMARY:An Introduction to Persephone Books
DESCRIPTION:U.K. publisher Persephone Books reprints neglected fiction and non-fiction\, mostly by women writers and mostly dating from the early twentieth-century. \nJoin us for a fascinating evening with publisher Francesca Beauman\, who will discuss why the company was founded\, how the books are chosen\, the thinking behind the unusual design\, and what the future holds following this year’s 25th anniversary celebrations. \nWe’re also stocking some of their gorgeous collection\, with their famed\, colourful endpapers and a carefully-curated selection of political books\, memoirs and literature in translation from under-appreciated woman writers. \nThis event is free but ticketed — although if you don’t have a ticket\, we often accept walk-ins on the day! SUMMARY:The Shape of You: A Hermit Crab Writing Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Want to work on your personal story with an accomplished novelist? Join us on Wednesday\, August 14 at 6:30 p.m. for a “hermit crab” style mental health writing workshop with the wonderful Leanne Toshiko Simpson. \nHermit crab essays have emerged as exciting and generative containers for personal storytelling over the past two decades. As their popularity has grown\, these creative pieces have taken the shape of family recipes\, instructional manuals\, obituaries and other familiar forms\, offering a protective space to begin the writing process and a chance to reimagine the cultural expectations of each shape. \nFor workshop facilitator Leanne\, narrating her life has been challenging in that she is often writing emotionally difficult stories AND stories that may be less recognizable for those who don’t share her lived experience. She finds that working within a “shell” — as she did in her debut novel\, Never Been Better\, which uses the shape of a romantic comedy to explore mental illness — helps her understand and question the “rules of the game\,” whether it’s the guiding structures of family\, relationships\, illness or even just the choreography of going on a date. It also makes for a very fun reading experience for those outside the story! \nThis writing workshop is open to anyone trying to tell a “difficult” story in a creative and nonlinear way (fiction or nonfiction). No writing experience required\, just life experience that you’re interested in reframing creatively. There will be peer support available on site for anyone who needs it\, and proceeds from registration will be donated to Foundry\, a local youth mental health organization. \nTwenty spots available. RSVP here. \nAbout the facilitator: \nLeanne Toshiko Simpson is a mixed-race Yonsei writer\, educator and psychiatric survivor from Toronto. She loves writing joyful\, messy\, laugh-out-loud stories about living with mental illness\, and the moments of hope that help us get out of bed day after day. Leanne is a graduate of UTSC Creative Writing and the University of Guelph’s MFA\, and is currently completing an EdD in Social Justice Education at the University of Toronto. She teaches seminars in disability arts and BIPOC literature at Trinity College and is a co-founder of Mata Ashita\, a national writing circle for Nikkei communities. Named Scarborough’s Emerging Writer in 2016 and nominated for the Journey Prize in 2019\, Leanne also launched a reflective writing program at Canada’s largest mental health centre after being hospitalized for bipolar disorder. Her debut novel Never Been Better has been highlighted by CBC Q\, Good Morning America\, Electric Literature\, The Toronto Star and others.\n \nAbout the peer support facilitator: \nNico Koyanagi is a mixed-race Yonsei who lives in Nogojiwanong on Michi Saagiig Nishnaabeg territory. She is a community organizer\, facilitator\, mediator\, and peer supporter who centres connection and healing in all her work. She holds an MSW from York University and works with various community organizations including OPIRG Peterborough\, Mata Ashita: An Intergenerational Writing Circle for Japanese Canadians\, and Tsuru for Solidarity\, a nonviolent\, direct action project of Japanese American social justice advocates. \nMore about Upstart & Crow: \nLocated on Granville Island\, Upstart & Crow is a literary arts studio for curious readers and creative storytellers alike. SUMMARY:The Outlier: Book Launch
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Tuesday\, Aug. 13 at 7 p.m. for the Vancouver launch of The Outlier\, an audaciously twisty psychological thriller by award-winning writer Elisabeth Eaves published by Random House. Eaves will be in conversation with journalist Peg Fong. \nCate Winter is a wildly successful neuroscientist and entrepreneur who has invented a cure for Alzheimer’s that will improve the lives of millions. On the verge of selling her biotech company for an obscene sum\, she is also about to become very rich. But Cate has a secret that keeps her deeply uneasy about everything she is and does: she grew up at the Cleckley Institute\, a treatment facility for the rehabilitation of psychopathic children. And\, as far as she knows\, she is the institute’s only success: all of her peers have become thwarted\, maladjusted or even criminal adults. \nThen Cate discovers the existence of another ex-patient and outlier who might prove that her success isn’t a fluke. He has not only stayed out of jail\, but he’s made a mark in business and science. Though his identity is confidential\, she breaks the rules and drops everything to track him down. And when she finds him\, living under an assumed name in Baja California\, she is immediately obsessed. Like her\, he is driven and brilliant\, an innovator willing to do what it takes to perfect a new energy technology that will stop global warming. Here\, at last\, is her mirror\, her ultimate collaborator\, the possible answer to the enigma of her nature. \nBut in the wake of a mysterious death\, Cate can’t avoid suspecting him. If he is involved\, do his ends justify his means? Ruthless herself\, she’s about to find out whether there are any moral lines she won’t cross. \nJoin us in celebrating this exciting new thriller! Books will be available for purchase and signing. This is a free event\, but please register for your spot at our Eventbrite\, as capacity is limited. \nAbout the author: \nElisabeth Eaves is a debut novelist and an award-winning travel writer and journalist who has covered nuclear weapons\, biological threats and climate change for publications including The New Yorker\, Forbes\, and the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists. She is the author of two critically acclaimed nonfiction books: Wanderlust: A Love Affair with Five Continents\, which the New York Times Book Review called “a heady\, headlong chronicle of a decade and a half spent adrift” and declared a Notable Book; and Bare: The Naked Truth About Stripping\, which The Washington Post called “a first-rate\, first-person work of social anthropology.” Born and raised in Vancouver\, Elisabeth lives with her husband in Seattle. \nAbout the moderator: \nPeg Fong is a journalist\, educator\, author and podcaster. Her podcast Alone Together: A Curious Exploration of Loneliness is heard in more than 30 countries\, and the YA book based on research and interviews from the show was published in March 2024 by Orca Book. \nMore about Upstart & Crow: \nLocated on Granville Island\, Upstart & Crow is a literary arts studio for curious readers and creative storytellers alike. SUMMARY:An Evening with Nisha Patel
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Monday\, June 24 at 7 p.m. as we welcome the wonderful author and former Canadian Poetry Slam champion\, Nisha Patel\, for an evening conversation about poetry\, process\, and writing from the self. \nPatel’s new work\, A Fate Worse than Death\, is a stunning poetic investigation of the worthiness of disabled life as told through Patel’s evaluation of her own medical records over the course of a decade. \nLiving with treatment-resistant diabetes\, bipolar disorder\, generalized anxiety disorder and complex chronic pain\, Patel reveals how her multiple disabilities intertwine with her day-to-day life\, even when care and treatments are not available. As she works through bouts of illness\, she shows how poetry gives her a way to resist the sway of medical hegemony and instead offer complex accounts of pain\, sickness\, and anger — but also love. \nPatel will be in conversation with Upstart & Crow staffer Franz Seachel\, a fellow poet. Books will be available for sale and signing. This event is free\, but please register for your spot on our Eventbrite\, as capacity is limited. \nAbout the author: \nNisha Patel is the Poet Laureate Emeritus of the City of Edmonton. SUMMARY:Cicada Summer: Book Launch
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Tuesday\, June 18 at 7 p.m. to launch Cicada Summer\, the sophomore novel of the brilliant local writer\, Erica McKeen. We are so excited to welcome this eerie\, elegant novel into the world. \nIn the summer of 2020\, with a heat wave bearing down and a brood of periodical cicadas climbing into the trees\, Husha mourns the recent death of her mother while quarantining with her ailing grandfather\, Arthur\, at his lakeside cabin in remote Ontario. They’re soon joined by Husha’s ex-lover\, Nellie\, who arrives without explanation to complete their trio. \nAlso among them is a strange book\, discovered by Husha while cleaning out her mother’s house. When she\, Arthur\, and Nellie begin to read it together\, they learn that her mother’s last missive was a short story collection\, crawling with unsettling imagery and terrifying transformations. As the stories bleed into their cloistered life in the cabin\, they must each reckon with loss\, longing\, and what it means to truly know another person. Incantatory and atmospheric\, Cicada Summer is a dazzlingly original novel about how we grieve and care for one another. \nAt this event\, Erica will be joined by writers Carleigh Baker and Genki Ferguson. Books will be available for purchase and signing. This is a free event\, but please register for your spot at our Eventbrite\, as capacity is limited. \nAbout the author: \nErica McKeen is the author of Tear\, a novel that won the Rakuten Kobo Emerging Writer Prize for literary fiction\, and Cicada Summer. SUMMARY:Thorn Tree: Vancouver Launch
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Thursday\, June 13 at 6 p.m. for the Vancouver launch of Thorn Tree\, a beautifully wrought novel by Max Ludington on the aftershocks of the heady but dangerous late 1960s and the relationship between trauma and the creative impulse. \nNow in his late-sixties\, Daniel lives in quiet anonymity in a converted guest cottage in the Hollywood Hills. A legendary artist\, he’s known for one seminal work — Thorn Tree — a hulking\, welded\, scrap metal sculpture that he built in the Mojave desert in the 1970s. The work emerged from tragedy\, but building it kept Daniel alive and catapulted him to brief\, reluctant fame in the art world. \nDaniel is neighbors with Celia\, a charismatic but fragile actress. She too experienced youthful fame\, hers in a popular television series\, but saw her life nearly collapse after a series of bad decisions. Now\, a new movie with a notorious director might reignite her career. \nA single mother\, Celia leaves her young son Dean for weeks at a time with her father\, Jack\, who stays at her house while she’s on location. Jack and Daniel strike up a tentative friendship as Dean takes to visiting Daniel’s cottage — but something about Jack seems off. Discomfiting\, strangely intimate\, with flashes of anger balanced by an almost philosophical bent\, Jack is not the harmless grandparent he pretends to be. \nWeaving the idealism and the darkness of the late 1960s\, the glossy surfaces of Los Angeles celebrity today\, and thrumming with the sound of the Grateful Dead\, the mania of Charles Manson and other cults\, and the secrets that both Jack and Daniel have harboured for 50 years\, Thorn Tree is an utterly-compelling novel. \nAt this event\, author Max Ludington will be in conversation with actor\, writer and director Bill Marchant. This event is free\, but please reserve your spot on our Eventbrite\, as capacity is limited. Books will be on hand for purchase and signing. \nAbout the author: \nMax Ludington’s first novel\, Tiger in a Trance\, was a New York Times Notable book\, and his fiction has appeared in Tin House\, Meridian\, HOW Journal\, Outerbridge\, and On the Rocks: the KGB Bar Fiction Reader. He lives in Brooklyn\, New York and teaches in the writing department at Pratt Institute. \nAbout the moderator: \nBill Marchant is a Vancouver based actor\, writer and director. SUMMARY:Get LIT: An Evening with Jeff Karp
DESCRIPTION:In the age of convenience\, information overload\, and endless exposure to stimuli\, it’s easy to trudge through the motions of life\, pressured\, distracted and seeking instant gratification. When this way of living becomes the norm\, it can immobilize us\, making it feel impossible to reclaim control of our lives with intention and enthusiasm. \nThere’s another way. Join us at Upstart & Crow on Sunday\, June 9 at 7 p.m. to learn about getting LIT with author\, Harvard Medical School professor and renowned bioinspirationalist\, Jeff Karp. Karp will be in conversation with Upstart & Crow cofounder\, Ian Gill. \nIn his new book\, LIT: Life Ignition Tools: Use Nature’s Playbook to Energize Your Brain\, Spark Ideas and Ignite Action (William Morrow)\, Karp teaches us to harness the vital wisdom and power of nature to place us into a lit state. Lit is a life magnifier\, a heightened state of awareness that drives curiosity\, connection\, and energy. In short: being lit takes us off autopilot and helps us stay alert\, present\, and fully engaged. \nDiagnosed with learning differences and ADHD at a young age\, Karp persisted through nearly insurmountable struggles. After discovering that he could think about thinking at age seven\, he became his own science experiment\, tapping into the lit state through trial and error to achieve hyper-awareness and explore his curiosity\, creativity and connection to nature. Decades later\, as a biotech innovator\, husband and father\, lit continues to encourage opportunities for innovation in his professional and personal lives. \nThis is a free event\, but please register for your spot on this Eventbrite\, as capacity is limited. Books will be available for purchase. \nAbout the author: \nJeff Karp\, Ph.D.\, is an acclaimed mentor and biomedical engineering professor at Harvard Medical School and MIT\, a Distinguished Chair at Brigham and Women’s Hospital\, and a fellow of the National Academy of Inventors. He has dedicated his research to bioinspired medical problem-solving\, and his lab’s technologies have led to the formation of twelve companies. The technologies they have developed include a tissue glue that can seal holes inside a beating heart; targeted therapy for osteoarthritis\, Crohn’s disease\, and brain disorders; “smart needles” that automatically stop when they reach their target; a nasal spray that neutralizes pathogens; and immunotherapy approaches to annihilate cancer. Dr. Karp is also head of innovation at Geoversity\, Nature’s University\, a rainforest conservancy located in one of the top biodiversity hotspots in the world. He was selected as the Outstanding Faculty Undergraduate Mentor among all faculty at MIT and the top graduate student mentor of Harvard-MIT students. Dr. Karp lives in Brookline\, Massachusetts\, with his wife\, children\, and two Cavalier King Charles spaniels. \nMore about Upstart & Crow: \nLocated on Granville Island\, Upstart & Crow is a literary arts studio for curious readers and creative storytellers alike. SUMMARY:Live from Australia: An Evening with Alexis Wright
DESCRIPTION:Join us in a special evening conversation with Alexis Wright\, author of the epic new novel Praiseworthy and “arguably the most important Aboriginal Australian — or simply Australian — writer alive today\,” according to The New York Times. \nIn this intimate virtual event\, hosted by Upstart & Crow cofounder Ian Gill and co-presented with the Vancouver Writers Fest\, readers will be immersed in Wright’s incredible and groundbreaking career as a novelist\, as well as her work as a writer and activist in Australia. \nWright is not alone in thinking that colonialism and its handmaiden\, racism\, is alive and not well in Australia. Recognition and reconciliation hardly scratch the surface of the deep-rooted antipathy and outright fear that non-Indigenous Australians have for First Nations. It’s ugly\, and Wright doesn’t hesitate to tell it like it is. \nGill and Wright will discuss the author’s fourth and latest novel\, Praiseworthy\, an epic that pushes allegory and language to its limit; a unique masterpiece that bends time and reality\, opening new literary vistas; a cry of outrage against oppression and disadvantage; and a fable for the end of days. The novel is a gritty\, gutsy satire about Indigenous people themselves\, but also more unsparingly about small town racists and big talking governments. \nThe plot\, as summarized by publisher New Directions: “In a small town in the north of Australia\, a mysterious cloud heralds both an ecological catastrophe and a gathering of the ancestors. A crazed visionary looks to donkeys to solve the global climate crisis and the economic dependency of the Aboriginal people. \n“His wife\, seeking solace from his madness\, follows the dance of butterflies and scours the internet to find out how her Aboriginal/Chinese family could be repatriated to China. One of their sons\, named Aboriginal Sovereignty\, is determined to commit suicide. The other\, Tommyhawk\, wishes his brother dead so that he can pursue his dream of becoming white and powerful.” \nGet your tickets here. \nTo coincide with the release of Praiseworthy\, New Directions is re-releasing Wright’s 2006 novel Carpentaria\, itself a searing collection of “stories of trouble” that point to an infinite divide in which\, “in the end\, black and white were both crawling on the ground in reconciliation. Both saying they were plain jack of each other.” \nCanadians have much to learn from this most perceptive and fearless commentator and chronicler of “country\,” the only reliable source of solace for a people who are living in a made up country rendered unrecognizable and irreconcilable to those who have lived there since time out of mind. \nThis event is Wright’s only launch event for Canadian readers. It is virtual and open to anyone\, and there are three ticket options: \n$35 — Ticket + copy of book (pickup at our Granville Island studio\, or shipping option)\n$10 — Ticket + support our initiatives and Thistalalh Library\, an Indigenous library in Heiltsuk territory on the Central Coast of B.C.\n$0 — Ticket only. \nGet your tickets here. \nThank you to the Vancouver Writers Fest and New Directions Publishing for partnering with us on this event. \nMore about the author: \nAlexis Wright\, called “a towering figure of letters” by the New York Times\, is a member of the Waanyi nation of the southern highlands of the Gulf of Carpentaria. The author of the prize-winning novels Carpentaria and The Swan Book\, she has published three works of non-fiction: Take Power\, an oral history of the Central Land Council; Grog War\, a study of alcohol abuse in the Northern Territory; and Tracker\, an award-winning collective memoir of Aboriginal leader Tracker Tilmouth. Her work has been translated into Chinese\, Polish\, French and Italian. She held the position of Boisbouvier Chair in Australian Literature at the University of Melbourne between 2017-2022. Wright is the only author to win both the Miles Franklin Award (in 2007 for Carpentaria) and the Stella Prize (in 2018 for Tracker). \nMore about the host: \nIan Gill is an Australian-born journalist\, author\, conservationist and bookseller. He is co-creator of Salmon Nation\, and co-owner of the independent Vancouver literary arts studio Upstart & Crow. He divides his time between unceded ƛaʔuukʷiʔatḥ (Tla-o-qui-aht) territory off the west coast of Vancouver Island\, and the unceded territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam)\, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish)\, and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) nations.\n\nPraise for Praiseworthy: \n“A shimmering vision of the legacy of colonialism in Australia\, and the reasons for optimism in hoping for greater justice and autonomy for its Indigenous peoples.” — Kirkus Reviews \n“This freewheeling and heartbreaking masterpiece from Aboriginal Australian author Alexis Wright brims with the magic of myth and the painful realities of present-day climate change. At once lush and relentless\, Wright’s looping tale combines magical realism\, absurdism\, and maximalism in a rich depiction of contemporary Aboriginal life. This is unforgettable.” — Publishers Weekly (starred) \n“I’m awed by the range\, experiment and political intelligence of Wright’s work: she is vital on the subject of land and people.” — Robert Macfarlane\, The New York Times Book Review

SUMMARY:Let It Go: An Evening with Chelene Knight
DESCRIPTION:Let’s talk about joy! Join us the evening of Sunday\, Feb. 18 as we celebrate the latest release from the prolific and ever-amazing writer\, Chelene Knight. Her new book\, Let It Go: Free Yourself from Old Beliefs and Find a New Path to Joy\, is a candid and essential book that will guide the reader to carve a new path to joy as unique as each individual. \nLet It Go draws on personal experience and the advice of leaders from various Black communities to share hard-won tools for joy-discovery — tools such as how to say no with love; how to call back activities that feel good; how to reshape communication with those closest to you; how to revise language; and most of all\, how to learn to let go to redefine what we think joy is. \nOrganized around the seasons and the natural cycle of reflection and renewal\, Let It Go showcases\, through conversation and solitary reflection\, the broad spectrum of Black realities and reveals the colourful kaleidoscope of joy and your own ways to find it. \n\nIn this free event\, Knight will be joined by the wonderful poet (and Upstart & Crow staffer) Franz\, in a conversation about the origins of the book\, how joy manifests in our lives\, and how to move through the world while being more deliberate about how we release energy and cultivate joy. \nPlease register for your spot on our Eventbrite page\, as capacity is limited. We will have books for sale and signing! \n\n\nMore about Chelene Knight: \nChelene Knight is the author of the novel Junie\, which was longlisted for the inaugural Carol Shields Prize for Fiction; the memoir Dear Current Occupant\, winner of the 2018 Vancouver Book Award and longlisted for the George Ryga Award for Social Awareness in Literature; and Braided Skin. Her essays have appeared in multiple Canadian and American publications. Previously the managing editor at Room magazine and the director of the Growing Room Festival in Vancouver\, Knight has also worked as a poetry professor at the University of Toronto and the University of British Columbia and as a literary agent at the Transatlantic Agency. Knight has now founded her own literary studio\, Breathing Space Creative\, through which she’s launched the Forever Writers Club\, a membership for writers focused on creative sustainability; the Thrive coaching program; and the Rise author care program. \nMore about Upstart & Crow:\n\nLocated on Granville Island\, Upstart & Crow is a literary arts studio for curious readers and creative storytellers alike. SUMMARY:Memoir Writing: How to Piece Together the Past
DESCRIPTION:**This event is sold out! Join the waitlist by emailing hello[@]upstartandcrow.com.\n\nHow do you write a memoir about something you don’t quite remember? Learn how to find your memories in the fragments that remain in this free and intimate writing workshop with Upstart & Crow’s 2023 Writer in Residence\, RJ McDaniel. \nAs a teenager\, McDaniel was admitted eight times at four different hospitals around Metro Vancouver. Ever since then\, they’ve been writing around the experiences of that year in fiction\, essays\, plays\, and even comics — but never addressing it at length. To write a memoir\, you need to remember what happened. And whenever RJ tried to access memories of that time\, it came in decontextualized bits and pieces\, impossible to shape into a coherent narrative. \nIn this event\, as part of Upstart & Crow’s Stories from Here Writers Residency\, RJ will dive into the process of how they pieced together untitled Google docs\, hospital records\, random notebook scrawlings\, Facebook Messenger archives\, and half-remembered events to create a memoir of fragmentation\, confusion and competing narratives of truth.  \nThey’ll also read excerpts from the memoir\, and discuss how their time in residence facilitated the creation of a project that has been germinating for almost a decade. \nThis workshop is free and open to all\, but please register at our Eventbrite as capacity is limited. Our studio space is wheelchair accessible. As of now\, this workshop is available in-person only. Please email us if you have any accessibility requests. \nMuch gratitude to the City of Vancouver for funding our 2023 writer’s residency.

SUMMARY:Strandings: A Conversation with Peter Riley
DESCRIPTION:Calling all lovers of whales\, genre-defying books\, and conversations about culture\, climate and psychology! You’re invited to join our virtual event with Peter Riley\, the author of the brilliant new work\, Strandings\, and Upstart & Crow cofounder Zoe Grams. \nSettle into a cozy seat at home for a wide-ranging\, thoughtful discussion about a book as enthralling as it is original. \nThis event takes place at 10 a.m. PST (B.C. viewers)\, or 6 p.m. GMT (U.K. viewers). \nIn Strandings\, author Riley reveals the secretive world of whale scavengers — people who descend on whales that have washed ashore to take its parts. Some scavengers are driven by magical beliefs. Some are motivated by profit: there is a black market for everything from ambergris to whaletooth sex toys. But for others\, the need goes much deeper. \nIn the book\, and in this conversation\, the fate of whales becomes a metaphor for our greed and continued disconnection to nature. Through stories of whale migration and discovery\, we begin to better understand our own history — and future. As Philip Hoare explains\, “I doubt anyone will ever match Strandings for its absolute\, engulfing\, and brilliantly enlivening whaleheadedness.” \nRegister for a free ticket here. This event will be recorded\, and there will be time for audience questions. \nWe are pleased to co-host this event with Bookbag\, an independent bookshop in Exeter\, Devon. They stock a select range of books with a local/global feel\, pair books with music\, and run a range of events from author talks to a book and film club and open mic poetry. Based in the U.K.’s far southwest\, close to countryside\, moor\, national park\, sea\, and ocean\, they have an abundance of nature writers near by.
