Books will be on hand for purchase. \nAbout the editors: \nSarah Chan (MA) is a musician & writer\, teacher\, social advocate\, yoga toddler (RYT-200)\, and mother of two. She operates a private piano studio\, seeing over 30 students every week. \nJhenifer Pabillano\, PMP\, is the co-publisher and co-editor of the Midlife anthologies. In her day job\, she is a Project Manager with the City of Vancouver\, working on strategic corporate projects for the City’s Engineering Services department. \nMore about Upstart & Crow: \nLocated on Granville Island\, Upstart & Crow is a literary arts studio for curious readers and creative storytellers alike. We are international in our outlook\, and local in our sensibilities. We create opportunities to surface new talent and champion bold ideas through events\, workshops\, literary launches\, unique partnerships — and yes\, we also sell books! \nHealth precautions: \nWe want this event to be fun and safe. Masks are welcome\, though we won’t enforce them. We hope that folks who come will be vaccinated and boosted and will stay home if they feel ill. \nAccessibility: \nThe main studio of our shop is accessible for folks with mobility aids. DESCRIPTION:Join us on Thursday\, May 16 at 6 p.m. for a fascinating evening of sex talk! SUMMARY:Live from Australia: An Evening with Alexis Wright
DESCRIPTION:Join us in a special evening conversation with Alexis Wright\, author of the epic new novel Praiseworthy and “arguably the most important Aboriginal Australian — or simply Australian — writer alive today\,” according to The New York Times. \nIn this intimate virtual event\, hosted by Upstart & Crow cofounder Ian Gill and co-presented with the Vancouver Writers Fest\, readers will be immersed in Wright’s incredible and groundbreaking career as a novelist\, as well as her work as a writer and activist in Australia. \nWright is not alone in thinking that colonialism and its handmaiden\, racism\, is alive and not well in Australia. Recognition and reconciliation hardly scratch the surface of the deep-rooted antipathy and outright fear that non-Indigenous Australians have for First Nations. It’s ugly\, and Wright doesn’t hesitate to tell it like it is. \nGill and Wright will discuss the author’s fourth and latest novel\, Praiseworthy\, an epic that pushes allegory and language to its limit; a unique masterpiece that bends time and reality\, opening new literary vistas; a cry of outrage against oppression and disadvantage; and a fable for the end of days. The novel is a gritty\, gutsy satire about Indigenous people themselves\, but also more unsparingly about small town racists and big talking governments. \nThe plot\, as summarized by publisher New Directions: “In a small town in the north of Australia\, a mysterious cloud heralds both an ecological catastrophe and a gathering of the ancestors. A crazed visionary looks to donkeys to solve the global climate crisis and the economic dependency of the Aboriginal people. \n“His wife\, seeking solace from his madness\, follows the dance of butterflies and scours the internet to find out how her Aboriginal/Chinese family could be repatriated to China. One of their sons\, named Aboriginal Sovereignty\, is determined to commit suicide. The other\, Tommyhawk\, wishes his brother dead so that he can pursue his dream of becoming white and powerful.” \nGet your tickets here. \nTo coincide with the release of Praiseworthy\, New Directions is re-releasing Wright’s 2006 novel Carpentaria\, itself a searing collection of “stories of trouble” that point to an infinite divide in which\, “in the end\, black and white were both crawling on the ground in reconciliation. Both saying they were plain jack of each other.” \nCanadians have much to learn from this most perceptive and fearless commentator and chronicler of “country\,” the only reliable source of solace for a people who are living in a made up country rendered unrecognizable and irreconcilable to those who have lived there since time out of mind. \nThis event is Wright’s only launch event for Canadian readers. It is virtual and open to anyone\, and there are three ticket options: \n$35 — Ticket + copy of book (pickup at our Granville Island studio\, or shipping option)\n$10 — Ticket + support our initiatives and Thistalalh Library\, an Indigenous library in Heiltsuk territory on the Central Coast of B.C.\n$0 — Ticket only. \nGet your tickets here. \nThank you to the Vancouver Writers Fest and New Directions Publishing for partnering with us on this event. \nMore about the author: \nAlexis Wright\, called “a towering figure of letters” by the New York Times\, is a member of the Waanyi nation of the southern highlands of the Gulf of Carpentaria. The author of the prize-winning novels Carpentaria and The Swan Book\, she has published three works of non-fiction: Take Power\, an oral history of the Central Land Council; Grog War\, a study of alcohol abuse in the Northern Territory; and Tracker\, an award-winning collective memoir of Aboriginal leader Tracker Tilmouth. Her work has been translated into Chinese\, Polish\, French and Italian. She held the position of Boisbouvier Chair in Australian Literature at the University of Melbourne between 2017-2022. Wright is the only author to win both the Miles Franklin Award (in 2007 for Carpentaria) and the Stella Prize (in 2018 for Tracker). \nMore about the host: \nIan Gill is an Australian-born journalist\, author\, conservationist and bookseller. He is co-creator of Salmon Nation\, and co-owner of the independent Vancouver literary arts studio Upstart & Crow. He divides his time between unceded ƛaʔuukʷiʔatḥ (Tla-o-qui-aht) territory off the west coast of Vancouver Island\, and the unceded territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam)\, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish)\, and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) nations.\n\nPraise for Praiseworthy: \n“A shimmering vision of the legacy of colonialism in Australia\, and the reasons for optimism in hoping for greater justice and autonomy for its Indigenous peoples.” — Kirkus Reviews \n“This freewheeling and heartbreaking masterpiece from Aboriginal Australian author Alexis Wright brims with the magic of myth and the painful realities of present-day climate change. At once lush and relentless\, Wright’s looping tale combines magical realism\, absurdism\, and maximalism in a rich depiction of contemporary Aboriginal life. This is unforgettable.” — Publishers Weekly (starred) \n“I’m awed by the range\, experiment and political intelligence of Wright’s work: she is vital on the subject of land and people.” — Robert Macfarlane\, The New York Times Book Review

Her new book\, Let It Go: Free Yourself from Old Beliefs and Find a New Path to Joy\, is a candid and essential book that will guide the reader to carve a new path to joy as unique as each individual. \nLet It Go draws on personal experience and the advice of leaders from various Black communities to share hard-won tools for joy-discovery — tools such as how to say no with love; how to call back activities that feel good; how to reshape communication with those closest to you; how to revise language; and most of all\, how to learn to let go to redefine what we think joy is. \nOrganized around the seasons and the natural cycle of reflection and renewal\, Let It Go showcases\, through conversation and solitary reflection\, the broad spectrum of Black realities and reveals the colourful kaleidoscope of joy and your own ways to find it. \n\nIn this free event\, Knight will be joined by the wonderful poet (and Upstart & Crow staffer) Franz\, in a conversation about the origins of the book\, how joy manifests in our lives\, and how to move through the world while being more deliberate about how we release energy and cultivate joy. \nPlease register for your spot on our Eventbrite page\, as capacity is limited. SUMMARY:Memoir Writing: How to Piece Together the Past
DESCRIPTION:**This event is sold out! Join the waitlist by emailing hello[@]upstartandcrow.com.\n\nHow do you write a memoir about something you don’t quite remember? Learn how to find your memories in the fragments that remain in this free and intimate writing workshop with Upstart & Crow’s 2023 Writer in Residence\, RJ McDaniel. \nAs a teenager\, McDaniel was admitted eight times at four different hospitals around Metro Vancouver. Ever since then\, they’ve been writing around the experiences of that year in fiction\, essays\, plays\, and even comics — but never addressing it at length. To write a memoir\, you need to remember what happened. And whenever RJ tried to access memories of that time\, it came in decontextualized bits and pieces\, impossible to shape into a coherent narrative. \nIn this event\, as part of Upstart & Crow’s Stories from Here Writers Residency\, RJ will dive into the process of how they pieced together untitled Google docs\, hospital records\, random notebook scrawlings\, Facebook Messenger archives\, and half-remembered events to create a memoir of fragmentation\, confusion and competing narratives of truth.  \nThey’ll also read excerpts from the memoir\, and discuss how their time in residence facilitated the creation of a project that has been germinating for almost a decade. \nThis workshop is free and open to all\, but please register at our Eventbrite as capacity is limited. Our studio space is wheelchair accessible. As of now\, this workshop is available in-person only. Please email us if you have any accessibility requests. \nMuch gratitude to the City of Vancouver for funding our 2023 writer’s residency.

SUMMARY:Strandings: A Conversation with Peter Riley
DESCRIPTION:Calling all lovers of whales\, genre-defying books\, and conversations about culture\, climate and psychology! You’re invited to join our virtual event with Peter Riley\, the author of the brilliant new work\, Strandings\, and Upstart & Crow cofounder Zoe Grams. \nSettle into a cozy seat at home for a wide-ranging\, thoughtful discussion about a book as enthralling as it is original. \nThis event takes place at 10 a.m. PST (B.C. viewers)\, or 6 p.m. GMT (U.K. viewers). \nIn Strandings\, author Riley reveals the secretive world of whale scavengers — people who descend on whales that have washed ashore to take its parts. Some scavengers are driven by magical beliefs. Some are motivated by profit: there is a black market for everything from ambergris to whaletooth sex toys. But for others\, the need goes much deeper. \nIn the book\, and in this conversation\, the fate of whales becomes a metaphor for our greed and continued disconnection to nature. Through stories of whale migration and discovery\, we begin to better understand our own history — and future. As Philip Hoare explains\, “I doubt anyone will ever match Strandings for its absolute\, engulfing\, and brilliantly enlivening whaleheadedness.” \nRegister for a free ticket here. This event will be recorded\, and there will be time for audience questions. \nWe are pleased to co-host this event with Bookbag\, an independent bookshop in Exeter\, Devon. They stock a select range of books with a local/global feel\, pair books with music\, and run a range of events from author talks to a book and film club and open mic poetry. Based in the U.K.’s far southwest\, close to countryside\, moor\, national park\, sea\, and ocean\, they have an abundance of nature writers near by.

SUMMARY:An Evening with Cúagilákv Jessie Housty: Author\, Activist and Curator of Thistalalh Library
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an intimate evening and a spirited conversation on Wednesday\, Nov. 8 with Jess Housty\, a rising literary star and bad-ass activist\, mother\, organiser\, community gardener\, land-based educator\, librarian and author of a brilliant new book of poems\, Crushed Wild Mint (Nightwood Editions). \nHear about a unique partnership between Upstart & Crow and Thistalalh Library\, in which our customers donate funds that we use to buy books for Jess’s wonderful library in Bella Bella\, in the heart of Haíɫzaqv (Heiltsuk) territory on the remote central coast of B.C. \nIn conversation with Upstart co-founder Ian Gill\, Jess will also talk about activism\, conservation\, the brilliant non-profit education initiative Qqs Projects Society — plus the small matter of attempting to turn philanthropy on its head. \nGet your ticket here. \nJess will read from their new book\, sharing revealing poems honouring ancestral wisdom\, love (and other emotions)\, transformation\, and the hard work of living — all rooted in lives lived on Haíɫzaqv lands and waters. \nWe’re delighted to raise awareness about Jess and their work and we hope to raise money too — for Qqs\, for the library\, and for our own non-profit literary arts society. And we’d like to say a big thank you to everyone who has already helped make Qqs and Upstart a couple of B.C. success stories. \nSo come join us for a night of passion\, politics\, poetry and philanthropy!  \nPrepare to be entertained\, informed and challenged. SUMMARY:Canopy of Titans: Tofino Launch
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Little Costa Rica Cafe in Tofino\, B.C. to celebrate an essential and critical new book about the Pacific Coastal Temperate rainforest. \nIn Canopy of Titans: The Life and Times of the Great North American Rainforest\, authors Paul Koberstein and Jessica Applegate give us both a stunning biography of our part of the world’s greatest asset\, and a gut-wrenching chronicle of how recklessly we have\, and continue\, to lay waste to the richest ecosystem on Earth. \nThe authors will join us for an evening conversation with Upstart & Crow cofounder Ian Gill\, followed by questions and mingling. Tuutahkʷiisnupšiƛ Joe Martin will provide a welcome. \nBooks will be for sale by our event partner\, Mermaid Tales! Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are free\, but please register on this Eventbrite as seating is limited. \nMore about Canopy of Titans: \nIn Canopy of Titans\, authors Koberstein and Applegate examine the global importance of the Pacific Coastal Temperate Rainforest that stretches from Northern California to Alaska. Their urgent and authoritative account sets out the threats facing a vital environmental resource\, and celebrates the beauty and complexity of one of the world’s great forests. \nDrawing on years of on-the-ground reporting\, Koberstein and Applegate pull back the curtain on policies of governmental bodies that have seriously diminished the rainforest’s capacity to store carbon\, and uncover industry practices that have led to the destruction of swaths of a major ecological resource. Additionally\, using an environmental justice perspective\, Canopy of Titans shines a light on the Indigenous communities that have lived in the rainforest for millennia\, and the impact forest policies have had on their lives. \nAbout the authors: \nPaul Koberstein co-founded Cascadia Times in 1995 and has been its editor ever since. Paul\, a journalist for 40 years\, was a staff writer for The Oregonian and Willamette Week in the 1980s and 1990s. In 1995\, Utne Reader named Cascadia Times one of the best new environmental publications in North America. In 2016\, Paul won the Bruce Baer Award given annually to an Oregon journalist for excellence in investigative journalism in recognition for his investigation of industrial toxic air pollution. In 2004\, he won the John B. Oakes Award for the most distinguished environmental journalism in the United States for a series of articles on wildlife poaching in the North Pacific Ocean. Paul is a native of Oregon and currently resides in Portland. \nJessica Applegate is managing editor and photographer for Cascadia Times.  She is a lifelong environmental activist and public servant and works with young children with special needs. Jessica is a founding member of Eastside Portland Air Coalition\, a grass roots group that spurred creation of statewide air toxics regulatory overhaul\, Cleaner Air Oregon. SUMMARY:‘River Mouth’: A Conversation on Liminal Identities
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Saturday\, Oct. 21 for an intimate book and panel discussion in honour of River Meets the Sea\, a moving new novel about the complex nature of identity by Rachael Moorthy. \nIn this event\, Moorthy will be in conversation with writers Junie Desil and karmella benedito de barros\, discussing their work and topics such as identity and displacement. Our moderator is Franz Seachel. \nFilled with mouthwatering descriptions of food and stunning depictions of Coast Salish lands\, River Meets the Sea flows like the waters to which protagonists Ronny and Chandra are tethered. It questions what it means to be othered\, interconnected\, and a part of the natural world. \nThis event is free\, and books will be for sale\, of course! Please register at the Eventbrite here\, as capacity is limited. \nMore about River Meets the Sea: \nAn enthralling nautical epic\, River Meets the Sea traces the dual timelines of a white-passing Indigenous foster child in 1940s Vancouver and a teenage immigrant in the suburbs of Nanaimo in the 1970s. \nA natural-born storyteller\, Ronny is a left-handed “alley mutt” without a birth certificate who searches for his mother everywhere — most powerfully\, he hears her voice in the surging Stó:lō River. Born in the middle of the ocean on a merchant ship departing Sri Lanka\, Chandra is a dark-skinned Dravidian boy with complicated roots and who finds his haven from his colourist mother and the pressure to assimilate by swimming and surfing in the Salish Sea. \nMoving gracefully between these parallel stories like a wave\, the novel traces the seemingly separate lives of these sensitive young men\, their displaced Indigenous identities\, and their everlasting connections to water. When their troubled paths inevitably cross\, they form a sacred bond based on the mutual understanding of what it means to be othered\, illuminating the interconnectedness of humanity and our innate relationship with the natural world. \nMore about the panelists: \nRachael Moorthy is a lover of water\, wisteria\, and words who is still trying to find the right ones in order to answer the question: “Where are you from?” A storyteller of all trades\, she is passionate about writing from the perspectives of melanated folks who\, like her\, are caught in the liminal aftermath of colonialism. Her debut novel River Meets the Sea hit shelves on May 30 and was featured on CBC’s Canadian Fiction to Read in 2023 list. Moorthy has a bachelor’s of writing from the University of Victoria and is pursuing a master’s in multi/interlingual literary studies at the University of Basel. \n\n\nkarmella benedito de barros (they/them) is a tired 2S afro-brazilian & mistawasis nêhiyawak plant lover\, youth worker\, community weaver\, sporadic artist and collaborative organizer. they are a co-founder of the art ecosystem collective\, member of the indigenous brilliance collective\, youth engagement facilitator with vancouver coastal health and garden coordinator at xʷc̓ic̓əsəm UBC garden.\n\n\nborn and raised in diaspora as an uninvited guest on stolen & unceded Musqueam\, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh territories; karmella’s artistic practice is informed by the land\, displacement and a desire to heal through perennial creative dialogue. cultivating a sense of connection and belonging\, celebrating fractals and the little things is all central to karmella’s creative and care work. their most recent experimental film “Black Native” is featured in Activations Of Solidarity with the Indigenous Curatorial Collective (2021)\, and poetry is featured in the collaborative exhibition “A Genocide Laid Bare” at Massy Arts (2023).\n\n\n\n\nJunie Désil is a poet. Born of immigrant (Haitian) parents on the Traditional Territories of the Kanien’kehá:ka in the island known as Tiohtià:ke (Montréal)\, raised in Treaty 1 Territory (Winnipeg).\n \nJunie’s debut poetry collection Eat Salt|Gaze at the Ocean (TalonBooks\, 2020) was a finalist for the Dorothy Livesay Poetry Prize. Junie currently lives on the traditional territories of the Homalco\, Tla’amin and Klahoose where she is currently working on a forthcoming poetry collection.

SUMMARY:Pitfall: A Book Launch
DESCRIPTION:The stakes couldn’t be higher: How can we mine the metals we need without replicating the environmental and human rights abuses of the past? Vancouver-based journalist Christopher Pollon grapples with that question and more in his critical new investigative work\, Pitfall: The Race to Mine the World’s Most Vulnerable Places. \nJoin us on Tuesday\, Oct. 10 at The Charlatan on Commercial Drive to launch Pitfall\, a compelling read by one of the city’s most talented and dogged reporters. Books will be for sale. The event will take place in a room separate from the main bar. Tickets are free\, but please reserve your spot on Eventbrite as space is limited. \nThank you to publisher Greystone Books and The Tyee for cohosting this event. \nMore about Pitfall: \nPitfall is the compelling story of the quest to exploit the metals our civilization needs — and at what cost to local people and their environments. Beginning with the first waves of big\, foreign-owned mines in the 1960s\, investigative journalist Christopher Pollon shows how transnational companies rose to dominate copper\, precious metals\, and lithium in Latin America\, made inroads into war-torn countries in Africa\, and exploited nickel\, industrial metals\, and rare earth metals across Asia and Oceania. \nIf we cannot change our course\, Pollon argues\, we are condemned to mine deeper and darker places\, including the depths of the ocean\, sacrifice zones\, and near-earth asteroids. This disturbing vision of the future also includes robotic mines without workers and social license — unless we act now. \nThis book is published by Greystone Books\, in partnership with the David Suzuki Institute. \nMore about the author: \nChristopher Pollon is an independent journalist who reports on the politics of natural resources\, focusing on mining\, oceans\, and energy. His work has appeared in dozens of publications\, including National Geographic\, VICE\, the Walrus\, The Tyee\, and the Globe and Mail. He is also the author of The Peace in Peril: The Real Cost of the Site C Dam. He lives in Vancouver\, B.C.

SUMMARY:The Lost Supper: Book Launch
DESCRIPTION:Craving a wonderful new read that “melds food history with culinary derring-do?” Join us on Thursday\, Sept. 27 to launch the marvellous new book\, The Lost Supper: Searching for the Future of Food in the Flavours of the Past\,by Montreal-based journalist Taras Grescoe. \nGrescoe will be joined by fellow journalist J.B. MacKinnon (The Day the World Stops Shopping\, The 100-Mile Diet)\, for a lively evening of conversation and celebration. Books will be on sale. This event is free\, but please register on Eventbrite\, as our seating is limited! Thank you to the publisher\, Greystone Books\, for partnering with us on this event. \nMore about The Lost Supper:  \nIn the tradition of Michael Pollan\, Anthony Bourdain and Mark Bittman\, “a surprising\, flavorsome tour of ancient cuisines” — from Neolithic bread to ancient Roman fish sauce — and why reviving the foods of the past is the key to saving the future. \nMany of us are worried (or at least we should be) about the impacts of globalization\, pollution\, and biotechnology on our diets. Whether it’s monoculture crops\, hormone-fed beef\, or high-fructose corn syrup\, industrially-produced foods have troubling consequences for us and the planet. But as culinary diversity diminishes\, many people are looking to a surprising place to safeguard the future: into the past. \nThe Lost Supper explores an idea that is quickly spreading among restaurateurs\, food producers\, scientists\, and gastronomes around the world: that the key to healthy and sustainable eating lies not in looking forward\, but in looking back to the foods that have sustained us through our half-million-year existence as a species. \nAcclaimed author Taras Grescoe introduces readers to the surprising and forgotten flavors whose revival is captivating food-lovers around the world: ancient sourdough bread last baked by Egyptian pharaohs; raw-milk farmhouse cheese from critically endangered British dairy cattle; ham from Spanish pata negra pigs that have been foraging on acorns on a secluded island since before the United States was a nation; and olive oil from wild olive trees uniquely capable of resisting quickly evolving pests and modern pathogens. \nFrom Ancient Roman fish sauce to Aztec caviar to the long-thought-extinct silphium\, The Lost Supper is a deep dive into the latest frontier of global gastronomy — the archaeology of taste. Through vivid writing\, history\, and first-hand culinary experience\, Grescoe sets out a provocative case: in order to save these foods\, he argues\, we’ve got to eat them. \nMore about author Taras Grescoe:\n \nTaras Grescoe is the author of seven nonfiction books and a widely read commentator on the interplay of food\, travel\, and the environment. His journalism has been published in many of the world’s leading newspapers and magazines\, including the New York Times\, the Guardian\, and National Geographic. He lives in Montreal\, Quebec.

SUMMARY:The Compassionate Imagination: Book Launch
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Upstart & Crow to celebrate the launch of cultural commentator Max Wyman’s urgent new book\, The Compassionate Imagination: How the Arts Are Central to a Functioning Democracy. This will be a fun and passionate evening event! Max will do a reading and then share a conversation with The Tyee’s culture editor\, Dorothy Woodend. \nThis is a free event\, and books will be for sale\, of course! Please register at the Eventbrite here\, as capacity is limited. \nMore about The Compassionate Imagination: \n\n\n\nBuilt on 50 years of experience observing the growth of Canadian culture\, The Compassionate Imagination is a radical reimagining of the role of art and culture in contemporary democracy. It proposes a new Canadian Cultural Contract that re-humanizes our way of living together by tapping into our instincts for generosity and compassion that find their expression in art. \nThrough the 1980s\, the arts were increasingly deemed unimportant. Reflecting a broadly held political view that in a market-based economy the arts were “a frill\,” they were deemed “unnecessary” compared to the other demands on our public budgets. \nBut with the COVID-19 pandemic moving into our rear- view mirrors\, what kind of Canada might we make if we were to place art and culture at the heart of our mutual decision-making\, and return the arts to a central position in our education system — S.T.E.A.M. rather than S.T.E.M. — to ensure that all Canadians have access to our wealth of artistic practice and imaginative product? \nMore about the author\, Max Wyman: \n\n\n\nMax Wyman is one of Canada’s foremost cultural commentators. For more than three decades\, he wrote arts criticism and analysis for Vancouver newspapers and CBC Radio. The Compassionate Imagination is his seventh book on the arts in Canada. He is an Officer of the Order of Canada\, a former member of the board of the Canada Council for the Arts\, and a former President of the Canadian Commission for UNESCO. He lives in Lions Bay\, near Vancouver\, B.C.

SUMMARY:City in Flames: Book Signing
DESCRIPTION:We’re thrilled to host Toronto author Tomas Hachard for an author meet and greet and book signing. His debut novel\, City in Flames\, is out now by the very great publisher\, Flying Books. \nAt once evocative and propulsive\, City in Flames is a love story about two isolated people with a deep yet fragile bond trying to find their way to each other while political disorder engulfs the world around them. Described as Exit West meets Normal People\, the novel is a moving dystopian romance eerily in tune with our times. Come pick up a copy\, get it signed\, and toast the writer of this wonderful debut! \n“Tomas Hachard’s superb debut novel . . . [is] supple in its construction . . . a novel as thought-provoking as it is emotionally moving.” —Brian Bethune\, Toronto Star

SUMMARY:Readings from River in an Ocean: Essays on Translation
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Thursday\, August 17 at 5 p.m. PST for a virtual celebration of the gorgeous new collection “River in an Ocean: Essays on Translation\,“ published by the non-profit trace press. \nAt Upstart & Crow we love translated works\, and this collection — on decolonizing and unsettling translation by a group of incredible feminist translators and writers from the global south — is a special one. \nAs reviewer Wangui wa Goro says of the book\, “When a feminist translator responds to her calling\, the world is enlarged and a better place. This book is exquisite in its scope\, and its well-thought-out approach to translation.” \nWe’re proud to host the collection’s editor\, Nuzhat Abbas\, and three of the essayists\, Rahat Kurd\, Norah Alkharashi and Iryn Tushabe\, for an online reading and discussion. Each will give a short reading from the book\, followed by a conversation on the book’s themes. There will be time to ask questions\, too. \nNuzhat is the founder of trace press\, which publishes books that illuminate\, in complex\, beautiful\, and thought-provoking ways\, contemporary and historical experiences of conflict\, displacement\, migration\, life\, labour\, love and resistance. \nReserve a Eventbrite ticket here to the event\, and we will send you the Zoom link a few days beforehand. It’s free! \nAbout the book: What are the histories\, constraints\, and possibilities of language in relation to bodies\, origins\, land\, colonialism\, gender\, war\, displacement\, desire\, and migration? Moving across genres\, memories\, belongings\, and borders\, these luminous texts by poets\, writers\, and translators invite us to consider translation as a form of ethical and political love\, one that requires attentive regard of an other\, and a making and unmaking of self.

SUMMARY:Atomweight: Book Launch
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Thursday\, June 8 at 7 p.m. for a launch to celebrate the beautiful debut novel Atomweight\, by Vancouver-based author Emi Sasagawa. \nStartling and sensitive\, this is a coming-of-age page-turner that takes place in both London\, England and Vancouver B.C.\, and tells the story of a young woman coming to grips with her identity and sexuality in a rather unusual way: street fighting. \nTea and treats for this event are courtesy of the excellent small publisher\, Tidewater Press. This event is free\, but we ask that you please RSVP at the Eventbrite here as capacity is limited. Thank you! \nAbout the book: \nWhen 19-year-old Aki throws her first punch\, the respectable ‘good girl’ discovers she’s a fighter. \nGood girl\, good student\, good daughter: Aki has always done what her loving but demanding multiracial family expects. Far from her Vancouver home\, she adjusts to life in London—studies\, friends and a relationship with a wealthy but closeted Asian woman. Life is demanding\, but Aki is coping until a violent incident triggers an unexpected response in the young Japanese-Latina woman. She discovers that brutal bar-fighting relieves her stress and she begins a dangerous dual existence—obedient and accommodating by day and brawling by night. \nThis is a novel about the need to reconcile competing cultures\, traditions and values that also explores issues of sexual identity and violence. \nAbout the author: \nEmi Sasagawa is a settler\, immigrant and queer woman of colour\, living and writing on the traditional\, ancestral and stolen territories of the xwməθkwəy̓əm\, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh and Selilwitulh Nations. In her writing\, she explores identity and belonging through the lenses of mixedness\, queerness\, oppression and privilege. Emi is a graduate of The Writer’s Studio at Simon Fraser University and is currently completing an MFA in Creative Writing at the University of British Columbia. \nMore about Upstart & Crow: \nLocated on Granville Island\, Upstart & Crow is a literary arts studio for curious readers and creative storytellers alike.
