SUMMARY:Let It Go: An Evening with Chelene Knight
DESCRIPTION:Let’s talk about joy! Join us the evening of Sunday\, Feb. 18 as we celebrate the latest release from the prolific and ever-amazing writer\, Chelene Knight. Her new book\, Let It Go: Free Yourself from Old Beliefs and Find a New Path to Joy\, is a candid and essential book that will guide the reader to carve a new path to joy as unique as each individual. \nLet It Go draws on personal experience and the advice of leaders from various Black communities to share hard-won tools for joy-discovery — tools such as how to say no with love; how to call back activities that feel good; how to reshape communication with those closest to you; how to revise language; and most of all\, how to learn to let go to redefine what we think joy is. \nOrganized around the seasons and the natural cycle of reflection and renewal\, Let It Go showcases\, through conversation and solitary reflection\, the broad spectrum of Black realities and reveals the colourful kaleidoscope of joy and your own ways to find it. \n\nIn this free event\, Knight will be joined by the wonderful poet (and Upstart & Crow staffer) Franz\, in a conversation about the origins of the book\, how joy manifests in our lives\, and how to move through the world while being more deliberate about how we release energy and cultivate joy. \nPlease register for your spot on our Eventbrite page\, as capacity is limited. We will have books for sale and signing! \n\n\nMore about Chelene Knight: \nChelene Knight is the author of the novel Junie\, which was longlisted for the inaugural Carol Shields Prize for Fiction; the memoir Dear Current Occupant\, winner of the 2018 Vancouver Book Award and longlisted for the George Ryga Award for Social Awareness in Literature; and Braided Skin. Her essays have appeared in multiple Canadian and American publications. Previously the managing editor at Room magazine and the director of the Growing Room Festival in Vancouver\, Knight has also worked as a poetry professor at the University of Toronto and the University of British Columbia and as a literary agent at the Transatlantic Agency. Knight has now founded her own literary studio\, Breathing Space Creative\, through which she’s launched the Forever Writers Club\, a membership for writers focused on creative sustainability; the Thrive coaching program; and the Rise author care program. \nMore about Upstart & Crow:\n\nLocated on Granville Island\, Upstart & Crow is a literary arts studio for curious readers and creative storytellers alike. SUMMARY:Memoir Writing: How to Piece Together the Past
DESCRIPTION:**This event is sold out! Join the waitlist by emailing hello[@]upstartandcrow.com.\n\nHow do you write a memoir about something you don’t quite remember? Learn how to find your memories in the fragments that remain in this free and intimate writing workshop with Upstart & Crow’s 2023 Writer in Residence\, RJ McDaniel. \nAs a teenager\, McDaniel was admitted eight times at four different hospitals around Metro Vancouver. Ever since then\, they’ve been writing around the experiences of that year in fiction\, essays\, plays\, and even comics — but never addressing it at length. To write a memoir\, you need to remember what happened. And whenever RJ tried to access memories of that time\, it came in decontextualized bits and pieces\, impossible to shape into a coherent narrative. \nIn this event\, as part of Upstart & Crow’s Stories from Here Writers Residency\, RJ will dive into the process of how they pieced together untitled Google docs\, hospital records\, random notebook scrawlings\, Facebook Messenger archives\, and half-remembered events to create a memoir of fragmentation\, confusion and competing narratives of truth.  \nThey’ll also read excerpts from the memoir\, and discuss how their time in residence facilitated the creation of a project that has been germinating for almost a decade. \nThis workshop is free and open to all\, but please register at our Eventbrite as capacity is limited. Our studio space is wheelchair accessible. As of now\, this workshop is available in-person only. Please email us if you have any accessibility requests. \nMuch gratitude to the City of Vancouver for funding our 2023 writer’s residency.

SUMMARY:Strandings: A Conversation with Peter Riley
DESCRIPTION:Calling all lovers of whales\, genre-defying books\, and conversations about culture\, climate and psychology! You’re invited to join our virtual event with Peter Riley\, the author of the brilliant new work\, Strandings\, and Upstart & Crow cofounder Zoe Grams. \nSettle into a cozy seat at home for a wide-ranging\, thoughtful discussion about a book as enthralling as it is original. \nThis event takes place at 10 a.m. PST (B.C. viewers)\, or 6 p.m. GMT (U.K. viewers). \nIn Strandings\, author Riley reveals the secretive world of whale scavengers — people who descend on whales that have washed ashore to take its parts. Some scavengers are driven by magical beliefs. Some are motivated by profit: there is a black market for everything from ambergris to whaletooth sex toys. But for others\, the need goes much deeper. \nIn the book\, and in this conversation\, the fate of whales becomes a metaphor for our greed and continued disconnection to nature. Through stories of whale migration and discovery\, we begin to better understand our own history — and future. As Philip Hoare explains\, “I doubt anyone will ever match Strandings for its absolute\, engulfing\, and brilliantly enlivening whaleheadedness.” \nRegister for a free ticket here. This event will be recorded\, and there will be time for audience questions. \nWe are pleased to co-host this event with Bookbag\, an independent bookshop in Exeter\, Devon. They stock a select range of books with a local/global feel\, pair books with music\, and run a range of events from author talks to a book and film club and open mic poetry. Based in the U.K.’s far southwest\, close to countryside\, moor\, national park\, sea\, and ocean\, they have an abundance of nature writers near by.

SUMMARY:Poetry Is for Everyone: A Workshop with Kyla Jamieson
DESCRIPTION:**This event is sold out! Join the waitlist by emailing hello[@]upstartandcrow.com. \nJoin us for a two-part virtual poetry workshop series with Kyla Jamieson\, hosted by Upstart & Crow. Designed for anyone who wishes to develop or deepen their writing practice\, this series will incorporate readings\, discussion\, writing exercises and reflective journaling to help us attune to our poetic potential. \nKyla Jamieson (she/her) is a queer disabled poet and the author of the poetry collection Body Count (2020)\, which was named one of CBC’s Best Poetry Books of 2020 and shortlisted for the Pat Lowther Memorial Award. Her body of work challenges normative paradigms of productivity and worth to seek out notions of freedom that centre self-expression\, interdependence and accessibility\, rather than ability or privilege. \nIn this series\, Kyla will offer anti-ableist frameworks for relating to our creative gifts within the context and limitations of capitalism\, climate change\, global crisis and systemic injustice. We will read together\, write together\, and explore poetic forms and tools. In the first session\, we will cultivate a reflective and generative space; the second session will offer strategies for revision alongside a discussion on publishing and building creative community. \nThis is a two-part workshop. \nThe first session takes place Monday\, Nov. 13 from 2 to 3:30 p.m. PST.\nThe second session takes place Monday\, Nov. 27 from 2 to 3:30 p.m. PST. \nThis workshop is free\, virtual and open to all; curiosity is the only prerequisite. We will be taking an intermission during each session\, and captioning will be available. We welcome accessibility requests and inquiries at hello[@]upstartandcrow.com. \nPlease register at our Eventbrite\, as capacity is limited. Registration secures entry into both sessions. \nMaterials: Notebook and pen\, or your usual writing tools. \nMuch gratitude to the League of Canadian Poets for funding this series.

SUMMARY:An Evening with Cúagilákv Jessie Housty: Author\, Activist and Curator of Thistalalh Library
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an intimate evening and a spirited conversation on Wednesday\, Nov. 8 with Jess Housty\, a rising literary star and bad-ass activist\, mother\, organiser\, community gardener\, land-based educator\, librarian and author of a brilliant new book of poems\, Crushed Wild Mint (Nightwood Editions). \nHear about a unique partnership between Upstart & Crow and Thistalalh Library\, in which our customers donate funds that we use to buy books for Jess’s wonderful library in Bella Bella\, in the heart of Haíɫzaqv (Heiltsuk) territory on the remote central coast of B.C. \nIn conversation with Upstart co-founder Ian Gill\, Jess will also talk about activism\, conservation\, the brilliant non-profit education initiative Qqs Projects Society — plus the small matter of attempting to turn philanthropy on its head. \nGet your ticket here. \nJess will read from their new book\, sharing revealing poems honouring ancestral wisdom\, love (and other emotions)\, transformation\, and the hard work of living — all rooted in lives lived on Haíɫzaqv lands and waters. \nWe’re delighted to raise awareness about Jess and their work and we hope to raise money too — for Qqs\, for the library\, and for our own non-profit literary arts society. And we’d like to say a big thank you to everyone who has already helped make Qqs and Upstart a couple of B.C. success stories. \nSo come join us for a night of passion\, politics\, poetry and philanthropy!  \nPrepare to be entertained\, informed and challenged. That’s what we strive for at Upstart & Crow. \nReserve your spot on our Eventbrite page.

DESCRIPTION:Join us at Little Costa Rica Cafe in Tofino\, B.C. to celebrate an essential and critical new book about the Pacific Coastal Temperate rainforest. \nIn Canopy of Titans: The Life and Times of the Great North American Rainforest\, authors Paul Koberstein and Jessica Applegate give us both a stunning biography of our part of the world’s greatest asset\, and a gut-wrenching chronicle of how recklessly we have\, and continue\, to lay waste to the richest ecosystem on Earth. \nThe authors will join us for an evening conversation with Upstart & Crow cofounder Ian Gill\, followed by questions and mingling. Tuutahkʷiisnupšiƛ Joe Martin will provide a welcome. \nBooks will be for sale by our event partner\, Mermaid Tales! Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are free\, but please register on this Eventbrite as seating is limited. \nMore about Canopy of Titans: \nIn Canopy of Titans\, authors Koberstein and Applegate examine the global importance of the Pacific Coastal Temperate Rainforest that stretches from Northern California to Alaska. Their urgent and authoritative account sets out the threats facing a vital environmental resource\, and celebrates the beauty and complexity of one of the world’s great forests. \nDrawing on years of on-the-ground reporting\, Koberstein and Applegate pull back the curtain on policies of governmental bodies that have seriously diminished the rainforest’s capacity to store carbon\, and uncover industry practices that have led to the destruction of swaths of a major ecological resource. Additionally\, using an environmental justice perspective\, Canopy of Titans shines a light on the Indigenous communities that have lived in the rainforest for millennia\, and the impact forest policies have had on their lives. \nAbout the authors: \nPaul Koberstein co-founded Cascadia Times in 1995 and has been its editor ever since. Paul\, a journalist for 40 years\, was a staff writer for The Oregonian and Willamette Week in the 1980s and 1990s. In 2004\, he won the John B. Oakes Award for the most distinguished environmental journalism in the United States for a series of articles on wildlife poaching in the North Pacific Ocean. Paul is a native of Oregon and currently resides in Portland. \nJessica Applegate is managing editor and photographer for Cascadia Times.  She is a lifelong environmental activist and public servant and works with young children with special needs. Jessica is a founding member of Eastside Portland Air Coalition\, a grass roots group that spurred creation of statewide air toxics regulatory overhaul\, Cleaner Air Oregon. SUMMARY:‘River Mouth’: A Conversation on Liminal Identities
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Saturday\, Oct. 21 for an intimate book and panel discussion in honour of River Meets the Sea\, a moving new novel about the complex nature of identity by Rachael Moorthy. \nIn this event\, Moorthy will be in conversation with writers Junie Desil and karmella benedito de barros\, discussing their work and topics such as identity and displacement. Our moderator is Franz Seachel. \nFilled with mouthwatering descriptions of food and stunning depictions of Coast Salish lands\, River Meets the Sea flows like the waters to which protagonists Ronny and Chandra are tethered. It questions what it means to be othered\, interconnected\, and a part of the natural world. \nThis event is free\, and books will be for sale\, of course! Please register at the Eventbrite here\, as capacity is limited. \nMore about River Meets the Sea: \nAn enthralling nautical epic\, River Meets the Sea traces the dual timelines of a white-passing Indigenous foster child in 1940s Vancouver and a teenage immigrant in the suburbs of Nanaimo in the 1970s. \nA natural-born storyteller\, Ronny is a left-handed “alley mutt” without a birth certificate who searches for his mother everywhere — most powerfully\, he hears her voice in the surging Stó:lō River. Born in the middle of the ocean on a merchant ship departing Sri Lanka\, Chandra is a dark-skinned Dravidian boy with complicated roots and who finds his haven from his colourist mother and the pressure to assimilate by swimming and surfing in the Salish Sea. \nMoving gracefully between these parallel stories like a wave\, the novel traces the seemingly separate lives of these sensitive young men\, their displaced Indigenous identities\, and their everlasting connections to water. When their troubled paths inevitably cross\, they form a sacred bond based on the mutual understanding of what it means to be othered\, illuminating the interconnectedness of humanity and our innate relationship with the natural world. \nMore about the panelists: \nRachael Moorthy is a lover of water\, wisteria\, and words who is still trying to find the right ones in order to answer the question: “Where are you from?” A storyteller of all trades\, she is passionate about writing from the perspectives of melanated folks who\, like her\, are caught in the liminal aftermath of colonialism. Her debut novel River Meets the Sea hit shelves on May 30 and was featured on CBC’s Canadian Fiction to Read in 2023 list. Moorthy has a bachelor’s of writing from the University of Victoria and is pursuing a master’s in multi/interlingual literary studies at the University of Basel. \n\n\nkarmella benedito de barros (they/them) is a tired 2S afro-brazilian & mistawasis nêhiyawak plant lover\, youth worker\, community weaver\, sporadic artist and collaborative organizer. they are a co-founder of the art ecosystem collective\, member of the indigenous brilliance collective\, youth engagement facilitator with vancouver coastal health and garden coordinator at xʷc̓ic̓əsəm UBC garden.\n\n\nborn and raised in diaspora as an uninvited guest on stolen & unceded Musqueam\, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh territories; karmella’s artistic practice is informed by the land\, displacement and a desire to heal through perennial creative dialogue. cultivating a sense of connection and belonging\, celebrating fractals and the little things is all central to karmella’s creative and care work. their most recent experimental film “Black Native” is featured in Activations Of Solidarity with the Indigenous Curatorial Collective (2021)\, and poetry is featured in the collaborative exhibition “A Genocide Laid Bare” at Massy Arts (2023).\n\n\n\n\nJunie Désil is a poet. Born of immigrant (Haitian) parents on the Traditional Territories of the Kanien’kehá:ka in the island known as Tiohtià:ke (Montréal)\, raised in Treaty 1 Territory (Winnipeg).\n \nJunie’s debut poetry collection Eat Salt|Gaze at the Ocean (TalonBooks\, 2020) was a finalist for the Dorothy Livesay Poetry Prize. Junie currently lives on the traditional territories of the Homalco\, Tla’amin and Klahoose where she is currently working on a forthcoming poetry collection.

SUMMARY:Pitfall: A Book Launch
DESCRIPTION:The stakes couldn’t be higher: How can we mine the metals we need without replicating the environmental and human rights abuses of the past? Vancouver-based journalist Christopher Pollon grapples with that question and more in his critical new investigative work\, Pitfall: The Race to Mine the World’s Most Vulnerable Places. \nJoin us on Tuesday\, Oct. 10 at The Charlatan on Commercial Drive to launch Pitfall\, a compelling read by one of the city’s most talented and dogged reporters. Books will be for sale. The event will take place in a room separate from the main bar. Tickets are free\, but please reserve your spot on Eventbrite as space is limited. \nThank you to publisher Greystone Books and The Tyee for cohosting this event. \nMore about Pitfall: \nPitfall is the compelling story of the quest to exploit the metals our civilization needs — and at what cost to local people and their environments. Beginning with the first waves of big\, foreign-owned mines in the 1960s\, investigative journalist Christopher Pollon shows how transnational companies rose to dominate copper\, precious metals\, and lithium in Latin America\, made inroads into war-torn countries in Africa\, and exploited nickel\, industrial metals\, and rare earth metals across Asia and Oceania. \nIf we cannot change our course\, Pollon argues\, we are condemned to mine deeper and darker places\, including the depths of the ocean\, sacrifice zones\, and near-earth asteroids. This disturbing vision of the future also includes robotic mines without workers and social license — unless we act now. \nThis book is published by Greystone Books\, in partnership with the David Suzuki Institute. \nMore about the author: \nChristopher Pollon is an independent journalist who reports on the politics of natural resources\, focusing on mining\, oceans\, and energy. His work has appeared in dozens of publications\, including National Geographic\, VICE\, the Walrus\, The Tyee\, and the Globe and Mail. He is also the author of The Peace in Peril: The Real Cost of the Site C Dam. He lives in Vancouver\, B.C.

SUMMARY:The Lost Supper: Book Launch
DESCRIPTION:Craving a wonderful new read that “melds food history with culinary derring-do?” Join us on Thursday\, Sept. 27 to launch the marvellous new book\, The Lost Supper: Searching for the Future of Food in the Flavours of the Past\,by Montreal-based journalist Taras Grescoe. \nGrescoe will be joined by fellow journalist J.B. MacKinnon (The Day the World Stops Shopping\, The 100-Mile Diet)\, for a lively evening of conversation and celebration. Books will be on sale. This event is free\, but please register on Eventbrite\, as our seating is limited! Thank you to the publisher\, Greystone Books\, for partnering with us on this event. \nMore about The Lost Supper:  \nIn the tradition of Michael Pollan\, Anthony Bourdain and Mark Bittman\, “a surprising\, flavorsome tour of ancient cuisines” — from Neolithic bread to ancient Roman fish sauce — and why reviving the foods of the past is the key to saving the future. \nMany of us are worried (or at least we should be) about the impacts of globalization\, pollution\, and biotechnology on our diets. Whether it’s monoculture crops\, hormone-fed beef\, or high-fructose corn syrup\, industrially-produced foods have troubling consequences for us and the planet. But as culinary diversity diminishes\, many people are looking to a surprising place to safeguard the future: into the past. \nThe Lost Supper explores an idea that is quickly spreading among restaurateurs\, food producers\, scientists\, and gastronomes around the world: that the key to healthy and sustainable eating lies not in looking forward\, but in looking back to the foods that have sustained us through our half-million-year existence as a species. \nAcclaimed author Taras Grescoe introduces readers to the surprising and forgotten flavors whose revival is captivating food-lovers around the world: ancient sourdough bread last baked by Egyptian pharaohs; raw-milk farmhouse cheese from critically endangered British dairy cattle; ham from Spanish pata negra pigs that have been foraging on acorns on a secluded island since before the United States was a nation; and olive oil from wild olive trees uniquely capable of resisting quickly evolving pests and modern pathogens. \nFrom Ancient Roman fish sauce to Aztec caviar to the long-thought-extinct silphium\, The Lost Supper is a deep dive into the latest frontier of global gastronomy — the archaeology of taste. Through vivid writing\, history\, and first-hand culinary experience\, Grescoe sets out a provocative case: in order to save these foods\, he argues\, we’ve got to eat them. \nMore about author Taras Grescoe:\n \nTaras Grescoe is the author of seven nonfiction books and a widely read commentator on the interplay of food\, travel\, and the environment. His journalism has been published in many of the world’s leading newspapers and magazines\, including the New York Times\, the Guardian\, and National Geographic. He lives in Montreal\, Quebec.

SUMMARY:The Compassionate Imagination: Book Launch
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Upstart & Crow to celebrate the launch of cultural commentator Max Wyman’s urgent new book\, The Compassionate Imagination: How the Arts Are Central to a Functioning Democracy. This will be a fun and passionate evening event! Max will do a reading and then share a conversation with The Tyee’s culture editor\, Dorothy Woodend. \nThis is a free event\, and books will be for sale\, of course! Please register at the Eventbrite here\, as capacity is limited. \nMore about The Compassionate Imagination: \n\n\n\nBuilt on 50 years of experience observing the growth of Canadian culture\, The Compassionate Imagination is a radical reimagining of the role of art and culture in contemporary democracy. It proposes a new Canadian Cultural Contract that re-humanizes our way of living together by tapping into our instincts for generosity and compassion that find their expression in art. \nThrough the 1980s\, the arts were increasingly deemed unimportant. Reflecting a broadly held political view that in a market-based economy the arts were “a frill\,” they were deemed “unnecessary” compared to the other demands on our public budgets. \nBut with the COVID-19 pandemic moving into our rear- view mirrors\, what kind of Canada might we make if we were to place art and culture at the heart of our mutual decision-making\, and return the arts to a central position in our education system — S.T.E.A.M. rather than S.T.E.M. — to ensure that all Canadians have access to our wealth of artistic practice and imaginative product? \nMore about the author\, Max Wyman: \n\n\n\nMax Wyman is one of Canada’s foremost cultural commentators. For more than three decades\, he wrote arts criticism and analysis for Vancouver newspapers and CBC Radio. The Compassionate Imagination is his seventh book on the arts in Canada. He is an Officer of the Order of Canada\, a former member of the board of the Canada Council for the Arts\, and a former President of the Canadian Commission for UNESCO. He lives in Lions Bay\, near Vancouver\, B.C.

SUMMARY:Atomweight: Book Launch
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Thursday\, June 8 at 7 p.m. for a launch to celebrate the beautiful debut novel Atomweight\, by Vancouver-based author Emi Sasagawa. \nStartling and sensitive\, this is a coming-of-age page-turner that takes place in both London\, England and Vancouver B.C.\, and tells the story of a young woman coming to grips with her identity and sexuality in a rather unusual way: street fighting. \nTea and treats for this event are courtesy of the excellent small publisher\, Tidewater Press. This event is free\, but we ask that you please RSVP at the Eventbrite here as capacity is limited. Thank you! \nAbout the book: \nWhen 19-year-old Aki throws her first punch\, the respectable ‘good girl’ discovers she’s a fighter. \nGood girl\, good student\, good daughter: Aki has always done what her loving but demanding multiracial family expects. Far from her Vancouver home\, she adjusts to life in London—studies\, friends and a relationship with a wealthy but closeted Asian woman. Life is demanding\, but Aki is coping until a violent incident triggers an unexpected response in the young Japanese-Latina woman. She discovers that brutal bar-fighting relieves her stress and she begins a dangerous dual existence—obedient and accommodating by day and brawling by night. \nThis is a novel about the need to reconcile competing cultures\, traditions and values that also explores issues of sexual identity and violence. \nAbout the author: \nEmi Sasagawa is a settler\, immigrant and queer woman of colour\, living and writing on the traditional\, ancestral and stolen territories of the xwməθkwəy̓əm\, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh and Selilwitulh Nations. Emi is a graduate of The Writer’s Studio at Simon Fraser University and is currently completing an MFA in Creative Writing at the University of British Columbia. \nMore about Upstart & Crow: \nLocated on Granville Island\, Upstart & Crow is a literary arts studio for curious readers and creative storytellers alike. DESCRIPTION:We’re thrilled to partner with the Vancouver Writers Fest for this event\, which brings Ukraine’s most celebrated writer\, Andrey Kurkov\, to Vancouver to discuss his latest work with international correspondent for The Globe and Mail\, Nathan VanderKlippe. Diary of an Invasion is a searing dispatch from the heart of Kyiv during the first year of the Russian assault. \nKurkov has been a consistent satirical commentator on his adopted country of Ukraine\, described as “a latter-day Bulgakov…  a Ukrainian Murakami” by the Guardian. His most recent work\, Grey Bees\, is a dark foreshadowing of the devastation in the eastern part of Ukraine in which only two villagers remain in a village bombed to smithereens\, and recently won the National Book Critic Circle Gregg Barrios Book in Translation Prize. \nNow\, amidst the invasion\, he spends the sleepless nights of continuous bombardment of his city delivering the truth about this invasion to the world. “This new Ukrainian reality far outdoes my writer’s imagination\,” he explains. \nDon’t miss the opportunity to hear from one of the foremost minds in European literature and an essential voice in the global anti-war movement. \nBooks will be for sale at the event courtesy of Upstart & Crow. \n\nStandard tickets: $35\nYouth under 25: $20\n\nAbout Diary of an Invasion: \nThis journal of the invasion\, a collection of Andrey Kurkov’s writings and broadcasts from Kyiv\, is a remarkable record of a brilliant writer at the forefront of a 21st-century war. \nThe author has lived in Kyiv and in the remote countryside of Ukraine throughout the Russian invasion. He has also been able to fly to European capitals where he has been working to raise money for charities and to address crowded halls. Kurkov has been asked to write for every English newspaper\, as well as to be interviewed all over Europe. He has become an important voice for his people. \nKurkov sees every video and every posted message\, and he spends the sleepless nights of continuous bombardment of his city delivering the truth about this invasion to the world. \n\nParticipants and speakers: \nANDREY KURKOV\, born near Leningrad in 1961\, was a journalist\, prison warder\, cameraman and screenplay-writer before he became well known as a novelist. He received “hundreds of rejections” and was a pioneer of self-publishing\, selling more than 75\,000 copies of his books in a single year. His novel Death and the Penguin\, his first in English translation\, became an international bestseller\, translated into more than 30 languages. As well as writing for adults and children\, he has become known as a commentator and journalist on Ukraine for the international media. He lives in Kyiv with his British wife and their three children. \nNATHAN VANDERKLIPPE is an international correspondent for The Globe and Mail. He has travelled extensively throughout the U.S.\, Europe\, Asia\, western and northern Canada as a print and television journalist based in Beijing\, Calgary\, Vancouver and Yellowknife.

SUMMARY:Storylines: Ted Chamberlin in Conversation with Wade Davis
DESCRIPTION:“Belief keeps us going\,” writes veteran author Ted Chamberlin. “Doubt keeps us alive.” \nJoin us at Upstart & Crow on Tuesday\, May 23 to hear Chamberlin’s insightful exploration of the power of stories and songs. “We draw comfort from our great myths\, and from the storytelling of our contemporaries.” One of Chamberlin’s contemporaries is acclaimed author Wade Davis\, and a conversation between these two master storytellers is simply not to be missed. \nTheir conversation will take place in our studio starting at 7 p.m. The event is free\, and books will be available for purchase and signing. Please RSVP here\, as capacity is limited. Thank you! \nAbout the book: \nStories are our first and last survival strategy. For tens of thousands of years\, they have told humanity what we know and what we don’t know\, what to wonder about and what to watch out for. Storytelling holds us together. And sometimes it keeps us apart. \nFrom the stories we tell children\, to literary works\, to pop music\, stories take many forms and give shape and substance to things we believe\, perpetuating ideals and identities and provoke controversy and conflict. They include explanations of the origin and purpose of things\, of causes and effects and sequences of events\, and of our relationships to the forces that surround us. \nThey also shape the institutions we establish\, the ways in which we constitute ourselves as communities\, and the covenants we enter into with secular as well as spiritual powers. Stories that celebrate growth and development and “civilized” progress can be a hazard when we use them to destroy Indigenous homelands and heritages and the environment. \nStories can also provide a form of resistance to the overpowering realities of the everyday\, empowering our imaginations to create a sense of possibility. It is within storytelling\, and by understanding how stories work\, that we can find a way to bring sympathy and judgment back into the centre of our conversations about what we can — and what we must — do. Stories and songs\, ours and those of others\, can help us. They can save us. \nAbout the author: \nJ. Edward Chamberlin is professor emeritus at the University of Toronto and was senior research associate with the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples. He has worked on sovereignty and land claims throughout Canada and around the world\, and has spoken widely on literary\, historical and cultural issues. He is the author of several acclaimed titles\, including Horse: How the Horse Has Shaped Civilizations\, and If This Is Your Land\, Where Are Your Stories? Finding Common Ground. He is an Officer of the Order of Canada and lives in Halfmoon Bay on B.C.’s Sunshine Coast. \nWade Davis is a writer\, photographer\, and filmmaker whose work has taken him from the Amazon to Tibet\, Africa to Australia\, Polynesia to the Arctic. Explorer-in-Residence at the National Geographic Society from 2000 to 2013\, he is currently professor of anthropology and the B.C. Leadership Chair in Cultures and Ecosystems at Risk at the University of British Columbia. The author of 22 books\, Wade is a Member of the Order of Canada\, and an honorary citizen of Colombia. \nMore about Upstart & Crow: \nLocated on Granville Island\, Upstart & Crow is a literary arts studio for curious readers and creative storytellers alike. SUMMARY:All Things Move: Book Launch and Conversation
DESCRIPTION:Join Upstart & Crow and Biblioasis on Thursday\, May 4 for an evening of conversation in celebration of Jeannie Marshall’s beautiful new book\, All Things Move: Learning to Look in the Sistine Chapel. \n\n\n\n\nThe book is an incredibly clever and articulate exploration of our relationship to art\, especially art that we may not have an affinity for\, or that comes with difficult cultural connotations. It’s approachable and enriching\, and we love it. \nThe evening’s conversation will take place between the author and The Tyee’s culture editor\, Dorothy Woodend. Our co-presenter is the incredible Canadian small press\, Biblioasis. This event is free\, and books will be available for purchase and signing. \nWe ask that you RSVP\, as capacity is limited. Thank you! \nAbout the book: \nA deeply personal search for meaning in Michelangelo’s frescoes — and an impassioned defence of the role of art in a fractured age. \nWhat do we hope to get out of seeing a famous piece of art? Jeannie Marshall asked that question of herself when she started visiting the Sistine Chapel frescoes. She wanted to understand their meaning and context\, but in the process\, she also found what she didn’t know she was looking for. \nAll Things Move: Learning to Look in the Sistine Chapel tells the story of Marshall’s relationship with one of our most cherished artworks. Interwoven with the history of its making and the Rome of today\, it’s an exploration of the past in the present\, the street in the museum\, and the way a work of art can both terrify and alchemize the soul. An impassioned defence of the role of art in a fractured age\, All Things Move is a quietly sublime meditation on how our lives can be changed by art\, if only we learn to look. \nAbout the author: \nJeannie Marshall is a writer who has been living in Italy with her family since 2002. A nonfiction author\, journalist\, and former staff features writer at the National Post in Toronto\, she contributes articles to Maclean’s and the Walrus and has published literary nonfiction in The Common\, the Literary Review of Canada\, Brick\, and elsewhere. \nMore about Upstart & Crow: \nLocated on Granville Island\, Upstart & Crow is a literary arts studio for curious readers and creative storytellers alike. SUMMARY:Making a Chaputs\, with Joe Martin and Alan Hoover
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Thursday\, September 22 at 7 p.m. for a fascinating exploration of the work of a celebrated master canoe maker… and enjoy discovering a hand-carved canoe right here at Upstart & Crow. \nTuutahkʷiisnupšiƛ Joe Martin and former museum curator Alan Hoover will discuss the meaning and method behind one of the most vivid and memorable symbols of the Northwest Coast: the dugout canoe. \nJoe is a member of the Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation and a fierce advocate for the protection of old-growth forests and wild salmon. In the 1980s he travelled to Europe to campaign to publicise BC’s poor forestry practices\, and was a key figure in the protection of Meares Island and the wider effort to stop old-growth logging in Clayoquot Sound. He is a recognized master canoe maker who\, as of 2014\, estimated he had made more than 60 canoes. In addition to making canoes and mentoring apprentices\, he teaches schoolchildren and others about the cultural traditions of the Nuu-chah-nulth peoples. \nJoe and Alan will share more about the process\, the role and responsibilities of the canoe maker\, and describe the meaning behind the 10-foot canoe that will be on display in our space. The teachings Joe received from his father and the expertise he has gained in a lifetime of canoe-making make for an unmissable\, intimate event sharing culture and knowledge.\nThis event takes place on the unceded territory of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam)\, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish)\, and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations.\nAbout Making A Chaputs: The Teachings and Responsibilities of a Canoe Maker (Royal BC Museum)\, $24.95\nJoe and Alan’s book is a rich visual testament to the practical and cultural power of the dugout canoe\, balanced with its descriptions of meaning and method. Both art form and technological marvel\, the chaputs carries Indigenous cultural knowledge passed down through generations\, not only of the practical forestry and woodworking that shape every canoe\, but also of the role and responsibilities of the canoe maker. \nThe text includes a step-by-step explanation of the canoe-making process from tree selection onward (carefully described and dynamically illustrated)\, along with the personal histories of a number of Joe’s canoes\, encompassing their planning\, creation\, cultural significance and role in the process of reconciliation. The teachings Joe received from his father and the expertise he has gained in a lifetime of canoe-making are recorded here in his own words for generations to come.\n\nAbout The Authors\nJoe Martin is a member of the Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation and a fierce advocate for the protection of old-growth forests and wild salmon. SUMMARY:The Petroleum Papers: Book Launch
DESCRIPTION:Celebrating Geoff Dembicki’s anticipated new book\, The Petroleum Papers: Inside the Far-Right Conspiracy to Cover Up Climate Change. \nJoin Greystone Books\, The David Suzuki Institute\, The Tyee and Upstart & Crow to celebrate Geoff Dembicki’s The Petroleum Papers\, called “essential”\, a “vivid expose”\, and “a truly needed compendium of Big Oil’s endless lies.” This is one of Kirkus Reviews’ most anticipated books of the year\, and is already receiving acclaim from critics and readers alike.\nWith experts now warning we have less than a decade to get global emissions under control\, The Petroleum Papers provides a step-by-step account of how we got to this precipice—and the politicians and companies who deserve our blame.\nAs Andrew Nikiforuk explains\, “Dembicki documents how oil industry executives willfully ignored the findings of their own scientists\, then spent nearly thirty years sowing confusion in order to paralyze public debate… Read this book on the power of lies and scream.”\nThe Petroleum Papers is published in partnership with the David Suzuki Institute.\nFree. Stop by from 5.30pm onwards. Light remarks at 6pm\, followed by book signings.\nEnjoy food\, drinks and good company until 10pm that evening. \nMORE ABOUT THE PETROLEUM PAPERS\nDrawing from hundreds of confidential oil industry documents spanning decades\, this explosive work of investigative reporting reveals for the first time the far-right conspiracy that’s stopped the world from preventing the climate crisis.\nIn The Petroleum Papers\, investigative journalist Geoff Dembicki tells the story of how the American oil companies that founded the tar sands in Alberta\, Canada—home to the third-biggest oil reserves on the planet—ignored warnings about climate devastation as early as 1959. Instead of alerting the world to act on this impending global disaster\, Exxon\, Koch Industries\, Shell and others created ad campaigns saying climate change isn’t real and that alternatives to oil are an economic disaster. These companies built a global right-wing echo chamber to ensure tar sands could keep flowing into the U.S.\, which helped elect Donald Trump and now leaves the Joe Biden administration with a sprawling climate mess.\nBut Dembicki also tells the high-stakes stories of people fighting back: the Seattle lawyer who brought Big Tobacco to its knees and is now going after Big Oil\, a young Filipino activist who saw her family drown in a climate disaster\, and a former engineer at Exxon who was pushed out for asking too many hard questions. With experts now warning we have less than a decade to get global emissions under control\, The Petroleum Papers provides a step-by-step account of how we got to this precipice and the politicians and companies who deserve our blame. \nABOUT THE AUTHOR\nGeoff Dembicki is an investigative climate change reporter from Alberta\, Canada\, home of the largest tar sand deposits in the world. His book Are We Screwed? won the 2018 Green Prize for Sustainable Literature. He is a regular contributor to the Tyee and VICE. He lives in Brooklyn. \nACCESSIBILITY AND LOGISTICS\nPlease RSVP here\, on Eventbrite\, so we have a sense of numbers. This event is first come\, first served so we recommend arriving around 5.30pm to secure your spot.\nThis event will be hosted outside rain or shine in order to be Covid safer. You go inside to order beer and non-alcoholic drinks and can order food from the food truck outside. If the weather is cooler\, do wear layers. We support wearing masks and maintaining distance when possible.\nWashrooms are inside as well. There is a ramp into the building and an accessible washroom on the main floor that includes a baby change table. SUMMARY:Found in Translation: Mona Høvring on Because Venus Crossed an Alpine Violet on the Day That I Was Born
DESCRIPTION:Winner of the 2021 Dobloug Prize (Norway)\, Longlisted for the Prix Femina 2021 (France)\, Winner of the Norwegian Critics’ Prize for Literature\, Shortlisted for the Norwegian Booksellers’ Prize… and now a Found in Translation Feature at Upstart & Crow. \nWe are delighted to present an interview with the prolific and enigmatic Mona Høvring: an award-winning poet and author\, whose most recent work\, Because Venus Crossed an Alpine Violet on the Day That I Was Born\, has captured imaginations and hearts across Europe\, and now Canada. \nAimee Wall calls it\, “A luminous tale of the “burdensome tenderness” between sisters and the emotional tumult of breaking free\, Høvring’s novel transports you to the faded grandeur of a hotel high up in a Norwegian mountain village. Høvring’s prose\, in Rankin and Dickson’s translation\, is sensual and searching and allusive; it shimmers with a strange winter light. I fell immediately under its spell.” \nThis is one of our top recommendations of books this season. \nDon’t miss an opportunity to discover more about its author\, the inspiration behind it\, and the process of moving a book into translation. \n  \nTicket Info \nTICKET: FREE\nBook + Ticket: $24.95

SUMMARY:On Time & Water: In Conversation with Andri Snær Magnason
DESCRIPTION:On Time and Water has been hailed by authors\, climate scientists and media across the globe as a beautiful\, literary way to look directly at the climate crisis; one that even offers hope at the future. Andri Snær Magnason wasn’t a climate scientist or specialist when he began this process but\, he explains\, “If you cannot understand our scientific findings and present them in an emotional\, psychological\, poetic or mythological context … then no one will really understand the issue\, and the world will end.” How\, then\, did the public intellectual—and one of Iceland’s most beloved writers—begin this vital challenge? Discover that and more—including how one writes an obituary for a glacier\, and how our understanding of human time can support a greater understanding of our obligations to one another. \n  \nTicket Info\nFREE OR BY DONATION

SUMMARY:The Environmentalist’s Dilemma: In Conversation with Arno Kopecky
DESCRIPTION:Gramsci once spoke of pessimism of the intellect\, optimism of the will. As we face the real and existential dangers in the climate crisis era\, grappling with humanity’s greatest calamity is both daunting… and essential. Award-winning journalist and author Arno Kopecky shares a collection of essays\, The Environmentalist’s Dilemma\, that help us to acknowledge both sides of the paradox we’re in: the planet may be dying\, but humanity’s doing better than ever. So how do we begin to answer questions about how to live within such a paradox?  Should we take down the government\, or try to change it from the inside? Is it okay to compare climate change to Hitler? Is hope naive or indispensable? How do you tackle collective delusion? Wise\, inquisitive and relatable\, this interview with Arno Kopecky will begin to answer some of these queries. \n  \nTicket Info \nFREE OR BY DONATION
