SUMMARY:Upstart In Translation Book Club: Beckomberga
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to Upstart & Crow’s In Translation Book Club\, a celebration of global literature and storytelling across languages and borders! This free\, bi-monthly event in our studio space introduces readers to powerful voices writing in languages other than English\, amplifying fresh perspectives\, underheard narratives and bold ideas. \n\n\n\nOn Wednesday\, June 10 at 6:00pm\, we’ll be discussing Beckomberga\, by Sara Stridsberg\, translated by Deborah Bragan-Turner. \nTranslated from Swedish\, this is an achingly blue novel about a woman who witnesses her father’s life spent almost entirely within the confines of Beckomberga\, a psychiatric hospital. But more than that\, it’s a beautifully restrained\, poetic contemplation on distance — between people\, between the sane and the insane\, living and dead. As Stridsberg writes\, “It is our long night\, Jim’s and mine\, opening up beneath me like the dark vault of heaven.” \nBring yourself and an open mind to discuss the book! You do not need to have purchased the book from us to attend\, but we’ll be offering a 10% discount on the title if you do. You can do so by selecting between two ticket options here. \nMore about Upstart & Crow: \nUpstart & Crow is a not-for-profit creative studio and literary incubator that champions writers\, readers and stories\, and the role they play in shaping our lives. We develop original programs\, support artists and revel in creative projects focused on Literature In Translation / Climate Solutions / Poetry / Civic Dialogue / Community & Skills Building … all with the aim of elevating the role of literature and storytelling in our lives. Find us on Granville Island\, Gibsons and online at upstartandcrow.com. \nAccessibility: \nThe main studio of our shop is accessible for folks with mobility aids. There is a washroom on the main floor available for attendees. As part of disability justice and community care for the chronically ill\, vulnerable and elderly\, we ask that you refrain from attending if you feel sick. \nQuestions: hello[at]upstartandcrow.com.

SUMMARY:Women Talking Climate: Living Labs Workshop
DESCRIPTION:“Living Labs are user-centered\, open-innovation ecosystems based on a systematic user co-creation approach\, integrating research and innovation processes in real-life communities and settings.” \nWe hold this truth to be self-evident: not only do women play an essential role in ensuring the long-term wellbeing of their communities\, especially in times of crisis\, but we cannot weather the climate impacts we face without their leadership and solutions-building. \nThat’s why we’re hosting an informal\, reoccurring event series for women and non-binary folks who work in climate — in any capacity — to mingle\, connect and celebrate each others’ work. \nOn Thursday\, June 4 at 6p.m.\, Women Talking Climate is hosting its first hands-on workshop to give you a taste of the European model of Living Labs and learn some of their practical applications in order to engage citizens and civil society\, policymakers\, businesses\, non-profits\, and academia alike when it comes to solving complex\, multi-faceted problems. \nThis 2.5 hour event will include climate-focused icebreakers; place-base “exploring” to enhance place-based education and engage with the current environment; and hands-on brainstorming sessions using collaborative and knowledge sharing tactics\, helping to strategize big picture solutions for some of these ongoing climate challenges. \nWe ask that you bring your burning climate questions or topics\, your desire to learn\, and your problem-solving hats: we’re excited to see what you can take away from this unique session! \nThe registration fee for this event is $5. Your admission to the event will include a structured 2.5-hour expert-led session\, non-alcoholic beverages\, and light snacks. Please RSVP here to reserve your spot. If you are experiencing financial barriers\, please email us at hello[@]upstartandcrow.com for one of our scholarship spots. \nMore about Upstart & Crow: \nUpstart & Crow is a not-for-profit creative studio and literary incubator that champions writers\, readers and stories\, and the role they play in shaping our lives. SUMMARY:Pitch Me Maybe: A Speed-Pitch Social for Science Stories
DESCRIPTION:Scientists! Have you ever wanted your research to travel beyond the page or the lab? \nJoin us on Wednesday\, June 3 at 6:30 p.m. for a fast-paced\, experimental evening designed to explore exactly that. Inspired by speed-dating\, this event pairs scientists or researchers with our crew of journalists for a series of rapid\, one-on-one exchanges. \nAcross multiple six-minute one-on-one rounds with journalists\, you’ll pitch the heart of your work and the questions that drive you. In return\, our journalists will reflect it back as a story that might reach and move a broader audience. \nIf you’ve ever struggled to tell the story of your work — which we know is often urgent and complex — this is a space to experiment and see how your ideas might take shape. \nThe registration fee for this event is $10. All proceeds of the event go to Upstart & Crow’s non-profit programming\, including writer residencies\, book clubs\, grants and more. Please RSVP here to reserve your spot. \nPlease note: though we cannot guarantee that these pitches will result in published stories\, consider this a low-stakes training wheels environment to practice your media engagement skills as a scientist! And have fun! \nMore about Upstart & Crow: \nUpstart & Crow is a not-for-profit creative studio and literary incubator that champions writers\, readers and stories\, and the role they play in shaping our lives. SUMMARY:litty Book Club: Lázár
DESCRIPTION:The litty book club is your chance to read the books everyone’s talking about before they’re talking about them. Created by readers and for readers\, the litty book club is a bi-monthly function and a welcoming space for strong opinions and lively conversation around a curation of litty’s prospects — newly published books the litty team believe have the best chances of ending up on critics’ end of year lists. \n\n\n\nJoin litty on Monday\, June 1 to discuss Lázár by Nelio Biedermann. \nHailed by the New York Times as “virtuosic… riveting… audacious\,” this debut is a gothic saga capturing the rise and fall of an aristocratic Hungarian family against the backdrop of two world wars. At the turn of the 20th century\, a child is born to the Lázárs. His birth brings to light the secrets\, affairs\, and peculiar otherworldly happenings that plague his family. Through one intergenerational epic\, Biedermann paints a portrait of a nation. \nThis event is free to attend. You do not need to purchase the book from us to attend\, but we’ll be offering a 10% discount on the title if you do. You can do so by selecting between two ticket options here. \nMore about litty: \nFounded by Hamish Clark\, Mark Perez and Sarchen Starke\, litty.ca gathers the most trusted end-of-year book lists from critics\, publishers\, and reviewers\, then brings them together in one place. No endless scrolling — just the books worth your time\, all neatly in one spot. \nMore about Upstart & Crow: \nUpstart & Crow is a not-for-profit creative studio and literary incubator that champions writers\, readers and stories\, and the role they play in shaping our lives. SUMMARY:The Alchemy of Paradise: Book Launch
DESCRIPTION:Join us in celebrating the launch of the luminous new novel The Alchemy of Paradise by author Susannah M. Smith\, out May 12 with Invisible Publishing. Smith will be in conversation with Krisztina Laszlo\, a Rare Books and Special Collections Archivist at UBC. \nIn The Alchemy of Paradise\, a curator confronts grief\, loss\, and mortality by arranging the fragments of her life — objects\, memories\, impressions — into a fragile order. Set in contemporary England\, with Venice shimmering at its core\, the novel follows her attempt to preserve what might otherwise vanish\, shaping a collection that makes survival possible. When order fails to yield meaning\, she turns to the alchemical\, where matter shifts into metaphor and loss becomes transformation. \nA novel of ideas told through poetic essays and reflections\, The Alchemy of Paradise explores the tension between collecting and transmuting\, order and disorder. In the spirit of Walter Benjamin’s collections\, and in dialogue with writers like W.G. Sebald\, Patti Smith and Leanne Shapton\, it meditates on the ways that art and imagination allow us to chart personal maps through the universal yet individual territories of loss. \nThis event is free\, but please RSVP here as capacity is limited. Books will be on hand for sale and signing. \nMore about Upstart & Crow: \nUpstart & Crow is a not-for-profit creative studio and literary incubator that champions writers\, readers and stories\, and the role they play in shaping our lives. SUMMARY:Upstart Climate Book Club: Vigil
DESCRIPTION:Upstart & Crow’s Climate Book Club meets every second month to read and discuss works that illuminate the complexity of our shared ecological present. While some are urgent works of non-fiction\, and others are novels or hybrid texts\, each book is chosen with care for its ability to open new vantage points\, challenge easy answers\, and — we hope — fuel our collective fight for a liveable future. \nEach meeting will be facilitated by Allison Gacad. Allison (she/her) is a journalist\, writer\, and filmmaker\, based on unceded Coast Salish lands in Vancouver. Her work broadly interrogates the politics and economics of climate solutions. \nOn Wednesday\, May 27 at 6 p.m.\, we’ll be meeting to discuss Vigil\, by George Saunders. \nA seasoned afterlife guide named Jill “Doll” Blaine descends once more to escort a dying man — only to encounter a soul unlike any she’s guided before. K. J. Boone\, a titan of industry\, meets death without remorse\, convinced his grand life requires no reckoning. Over the course of a single\, surreal night\, his mansion fills with visitors both living and dead\, human and uncanny\, as fragments of his past surface and press toward judgment. With dark humour and imaginative force\, Saunders stages a charged confrontation between self-perception and consequence\, probing the moral costs of power\, the environmental and human tolls of progress\, and the uneasy question of whether a life can truly be declared absolved. \nBring yourself and an open mind to discuss the book! SUMMARY:‘Ground to Stand On’: A Book Launch with Sandra Djwa
DESCRIPTION:Join us in celebrating the launch of Dr. Sandra Djwa’s memoir\, Ground to Stand On: A Canadian Literary Life. \n“Now\, don’t you ever leave Newfoundland\,” Premier Joey Smallwood told 17-year-old Djwa in 1956. But leave she did – only to return decades later as a pathbreaking literary scholar and one of Canada’s most influential female academics\, carrying with her a remarkable legacy of intellectual nation-building. \nPart memoir and part literary history\, Ground to Stand On traces a life in letters that was often ahead of its time. In a voice by turns quizzical\, amused and indignant\, Djwa offers an immersive account of the struggles and achievements of the first generations of women professors in a male-dominated academy while charting the emergence of Canadian literature as a respected field of study. \nBooks will be on hand for sale and signing. SUMMARY:Translation Spotlight: An Evening of Italian Literature
DESCRIPTION:Italian literature is so deeply beloved. But beyond the familiar\, what are the essential\, lesser-known works in translation that continue to shape how we understand Italy\, its histories\, and its literary voice? \nJoin us for an Italian Spotlight evening at our long table — an intimate\, salon-style gathering full of reading and great conversation. The evening will feature a curated reading list by professor Michela Valmori\, who will guide us through a selection of works in translation alongside Italian food and drink. The reading list will feature New York Review Books\, the cult-favourite series celebrated for its eclectic catalogue and beautifully designed covers. \nEmerging from an Italy shaped by war\, social change\, and cultural tension\, these texts explore individuals whose lives are shaped — and often fractured — by history. Moving through landscapes of memory\, family\, and marginality\, each work reveals a tension between belonging and estrangement. Together\, they document a shift from collective history toward increasingly personal and fragmented forms of selfhood\, where being “out of place” becomes a defining condition of modern Italian literary identity. \nThe evening will be accompanied by a special exhibition: Memories\, Maps\, Reflections: The Textile Cartography of Bettina Matzkuhn. Presented at Il Museo Gallery at the Italian Cultural Centre (April 11–May 24\, 2026)\, Bettina Matzkuhn’s work explores place\, movement\, and memory through intricate textile maps. You can learn more about her work here. \nThis event is in partnership with Il Museo\, the Italian Cultural Centre Museum. \nThe registration fee for this event is $20. All proceeds of the event go to Upstart & Crow’s non-profit programming\, including writer residencies\, book clubs\, grants and more. Please RSVP here to reserve your spot. \nMore about the facilitator: \nMichela Valmori is a researcher and professor at the University of British Columbia (UBC)\, appointed by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs to promote Italian culture worldwide. She holds a PhD in Comparative Literature and has published several works\, including Rosa: The Untold Story of an Italian American Immigrant and Her Hidden Secrets\, And There Were Red Geraniums Everywhere\, and Oceani allo Specchio. Her research and teaching bridge Gender Studies and cultural diplomacy\, exploring Italian literature\, migration\, and transnational identities while fostering international dialogue. \nMore about Upstart & Crow: \nUpstart & Crow is a not-for-profit creative studio and literary incubator that champions writers\, readers and stories\, and the role they play in shaping our lives. DESCRIPTION:Join us in celebrating the launch of the essential new book\, Wild Fire: Dispatches from a Country Ablaze\, by award-winning journalist Jesse Winter. For this evening event\, Winter will be in conversation with journalist Andrea Woo. This event is free\, but please RSVP here as capacity is limited. \nIn Wild Fire\, Winter takes readers on a dramatic and riveting journey to the frontlines of some of Canada’s most devastating blazes. Weaving together incredible stories of everyday courage\, danger and disaster\, he offers a unique view into our current peril — sharing invaluable insight from those who’ve faced down Canada’s hungriest infernos. \nAcross B.C.\, he encounters terrifying close calls and unbelievable bravery. In Jasper\, he meets the tireless volunteer firefighters who answer the town’s urgent call for help. And\, in the Far North\, he hears from residents who band together as the fires blaze closer and closer. At each site\, he also confronts a system buckling under the pressure of previously unimaginable fire. Since 2020\, wildfires have\, on average\, burned through five times more square kilometres than they did in the 1970s — destroying an area twice the size of Vancouver Island every summer. \nAs Winter journeys to the country’s most fire-prone areas\, he asks what we’re getting right and also examines what we’re getting perilously wrong. From there\, he makes the compelling case that if Canada wants to survive its inevitably hot future\, it needs to take the hard-won lessons of such local communities to heart. The end result is an account that feels immediate and intimate\, urgent and hopeful. \nMore about Upstart & Crow: \nUpstart & Crow is a not-for-profit creative studio and literary incubator that champions writers\, readers and stories\, and the role they play in shaping our lives. SUMMARY:The Future of Work Is Grey: Book Launch
DESCRIPTION:Join award-winning\, six-time author Dan Pontefract for the Vancouver book launch of his highly anticipated new release\, The Future of Work Is Grey: The Untapped Value of Age in the Workforce. \nA massive demographic shift is reshaping the world\, one that is permanently altering how we work. People are healthier\, living longer\, and redefining the concept of retirement. But for decades\, leaders have clung to outdated models that assume younger workers will always outnumber older generations\, that retirement at 65 is an unshakable norm\, and that older employees have little left to offer. \nThis mindset has left us working and leading in a period of “age debt” — the workplace equivalent of the climate crisis. The Future of Work Is Grey reveals the critical ways we must rethink work amid demographic\, economic and productivity upheaval. \nJoin Dan as he provides a 20-minute TED Talk-style presentation focused squarely on the critical issue of Age Debt and the solutions that he calls the Experience Dividend. Snack and refreshments provided. Book signing and mingling will follow Dan’s talk. This event is free\, but please RSVP here as capacity is limited. \nMore about Upstart & Crow: \nUpstart & Crow is a not-for-profit creative studio and literary incubator that champions writers\, readers and stories\, and the role they play in shaping our lives. SUMMARY:An Evening with Eve Joseph and Patrick Friesen
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a beautiful evening of poetry with local legends Eve Joseph and Patrick Friesen. The duo will be launching their latest collections and invite you to join them in readings and conversation. Tickets are free\, but please RSVP for your spot here as capacity is limited. \nIn Eve Joseph’s latest book\, Dismantling\, the poet is occupied with the idea of poetic imagination and how that often elusive thing can transform the mundane into the mysterious. In a book where fish are classified as bees and rivers are legally people\, things are not always as they seem. As the title suggests\, sometimes the act of taking something apart and building again from scratch allows a poem to find its true form. \nThe poems in Patrick Friesen’s latest collection\, Sightings\, move between the visible and invisible\, between the contradictions of human history and the immediacy of a complex present. Friesen examines memory and music\, rivers and personalities\, open to all possibilities and sceptical of wisdom. Instead\, these poems rely on the kind of knowledge that comes from experience: tremors and fragments riding on the movement of thinking. The distance from Friesen’s first book\, published 50 years ago\, to this one\, speaks to what it means to have known the world through poetry. \nMore about Upstart & Crow: \nUpstart & Crow is a not-for-profit creative studio and literary incubator that champions writers\, readers and stories\, and the role they play in shaping our lives. SUMMARY:Upstart In Translation Book Club: Now I Surrender
\nOn Wednesday\, April 29 at 6:00pm\, we’ll be discussing Now I Surrender\, by Álvaro Enrigue\, translated by Natasha Wimmer. \nIn 1886\, famed Apache leader Geronimo surrendered to the U.S. army after decades of resistance across the borderlands of Mexico and the United States. Álvaro Enrigue’s newly translated novel takes its title from his words: “Once I moved about like the wind. Now I surrender to you and that is all.” \nBeginning with the kidnapping of a Mexican woman\, the novel follows the ragtag expedition sent to retrieve her — a soldier\, a sharpshooting woman known as “the Nun\,” and two devilishly charismatic Yaqui twins. Part anti-imperialist epic and part alt-western\, Now I Surrender takes apart and reassembles the mythology of the “American” borderlands to challenge the stories we think we know about conquest and resistance. The result is a gripping\, genre-bending meditation on freedom\, myth\, and the contested histories of the desert frontier. Named a most anticipated book of 2026 by The New York Times\, The Washington Post and LitHub. \nBring yourself and an open mind to discuss the book! SUMMARY:Drawing Is Important: A Daily Practice Workshop
DESCRIPTION:What if the secret to becoming a better artist was just showing up with the most basic drawing tools and minimal time commitment? In this hands-on workshop inspired by his new book Drawing Is Important\, award-winning illustrator and teacher Tom Froese will guide you through the building blocks of a daily drawing practice — and then prove you can start one right here and now. \nWe’ll begin by looking at the obstacles that keep us from drawing more and how to overcome them. SUMMARY:litty Book Club: The Wall Dancers
\nJoin us as we dive into The Wall Dancers by Yi-Ling Liu\, a gripping and deeply reported exploration of China’s internet firewall and the communities pushing back against it. Blending contemporary politics\, culture\, and human stories of resistance\, the book has been praised by Jonathan Blitzer as a “masterwork” and compared to past litty selections like Some People Need Killing by Patricia Evangelista. Come ready for a thoughtful\, engaging discussion on April 17th — we look forward to reading with you. \nThis event is free to attend. You do not need to purchase the book from us to attend\, but we’ll be offering a 10% discount on the title if you do. SUMMARY:‘The Fifth Season’: An Evening of Poetry with Cori Howard
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening to celebrate the launch of Cori Howard’s new poetry collection\, The Fifth Season\, out now from Caitlin Press. Expect a great evening of cocktails\, conversation and poetry about marriage\, motherhood\, divorce\, dating\, desire and midlife reinvention. Howard will be in conversation with fellow poet\, Andrea MacPherson\, who will read from her latest poetry collection\, Reckless. The event will be hosted by former Vancouver poet laureate\, and award-winning poet and author\, Rachel Rose. \nThe Fifth Season explores the seasons of a woman’s life\, from marriage and motherhood to divorce\, disaster dating and reinvention. Through the arc of midlife\, these poems offer a map back to the self and a return to longing and new freedoms. In poetry that is raw\, honest and personal\, Howard carries the reader through the thresholds of her life\, illuminating the experiences of womanhood and the questions we ask ourselves during times of transition and reimagination. \nMcPherson’s Reckless follows the complex trajectory of female identity in a world that consistently denies women their right to assert it. These poems tackle an array of urgent topics women face throughout their lives including reproductive rights\, the trials of motherhood\, the pain of divorce and sexual emancipation.  \nBooks will be on hand for sale and signing. SUMMARY:In Trees: A Book Launch with Robert Moor
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the Beer Farm to celebrate the new book by acclaimed local writer\, Robert Moor: In Trees: An Exploration. The book promises to be a wondrous journey through the wilds of nature and the gnarls of history\, exploring how trees — from the mightiest sequoia to the tiniest bonsai — can teach us to grow wise.  \nOne day\, on a whim\, Robert set out to climb a tree near his home — unwittingly embarking on what would become a decade-long adventure of intellectual and spiritual transformation\, leading him to spend time in trees around the world. Along the way\, Moor learns the art of “tree-thinking\,” which\, he discovers\, has the power to break open some of humanity’s oldest questions: What is the secret to truly growing old? How do we set down deeper roots in an increasingly chaotic world? Most importantly\, how should we — as individuals\, as communities\, as stewards of the earth — live? \nA witty and relentlessly curious excursion through philosophy\, history\, and science\, what begins as an ode to the miracle of trees blossoms into a joyous\, daring\, fiercely hopeful endeavour to arborize humanity. \nThis event takes place in Persephone’s tasting room\, with books on site for sale and signing. And of course\, there will be beer. RSVPs are not mandatory but help us consider numbers\, so please RSVP here if you plan on attending. Thank you!  \nAbout Persephone Brewing Company: \nPersephone Brewing Company is an 11-acre craft brewery and certified B Corp in Gibsons that blends regenerative agriculture with high-quality beer production. Known as “The Beer Farm\,” it features an organic farm\, hop yard\, orchard and tasting room\, producing beer with locally sourced ingredients. SUMMARY:Decolonizing Time: Two Workshops on Embracing Alternative Timelines
DESCRIPTION:In these two generative writing workshops\, we’ll unpack a deceptively simple question: how do we measure time\, and who decides? \nAcross cultures and histories\, people have marked time in countless ways: lunar cycles\, agricultural seasons\, ceremonial calendars\, migrations\, tides\, and harvests. The familiar Gregorian calendar is only one system among many. What might it mean to look beyond it\, and what new ways of imagining time might open up if we do? \nIn Part 1 (Tuesday\, March 24 at 6pm)\, we’ll look at alternate calendar systems from around the world — including lunar\, lunisolar\, and Indigenous seasonal calendars — and think about how different communities have organized life around cycles of land\, food\, ceremony\, and movement. In what’s known as Australia\, there are at least nine different calendars among various Aboriginal nations; in what’s known as Manitoba\, Canada\, Opaskwayak Cree Nation people use a 13 moon system; in what’s known as British Columbia\, likewise Stó:lō Nation people name their 13 moons according to local land and waterway cycles. Together\, we’ll discuss how these ways of marking time connect to broader questions about culture\, land\, and diaspora\, before moving into generative writing exercises. \nIn Part 2 (Tuesday\, April 7 at 6pm)\, we’ll take a more speculative turn. Drawing inspiration from futurist and diasporic traditions such as Sino-Futurism and other Global Majority futurisms\, we’ll explore how writers imagine entirely new timelines and ways of inhabiting the future. What happens when we invent new calendars\, new rhythms\, or new measures of time? Through conversation and creative prompts\, we’ll experiment with writing that bends\, stretches\, or reimagines time altogether. \nAlongside writing and discussion\, we’ll also host a small seed swap. Participants are encouraged to bring seeds they’d like to trade — though if you don’t have any to share\, seeds will be provided. \nParticipants are welcome to attend either workshop independently. One registration gives you access to both sessions\, so you’re free to join one or attend both. Please select between three ticket options. To ensure event attendance and to help us cover costs\, the registration fee is $10. Please RSVP here to reserve your spot. \nMore about Upstart & Crow: \nUpstart & Crow is a not-for-profit creative studio and literary incubator that champions writers\, readers and stories\, and the role they play in shaping our lives.
