SUMMARY:The Future of Work Is Grey: Book Launch
DESCRIPTION:Join award-winning\, six-time author Dan Pontefract for the Vancouver book launch of his highly anticipated new release\, The Future of Work Is Grey: The Untapped Value of Age in the Workforce. \nA massive demographic shift is reshaping the world\, one that is permanently altering how we work. People are healthier\, living longer\, and redefining the concept of retirement. But for decades\, leaders have clung to outdated models that assume younger workers will always outnumber older generations\, that retirement at 65 is an unshakable norm\, and that older employees have little left to offer. \nThis mindset has left us working and leading in a period of “age debt” — the workplace equivalent of the climate crisis. The Future of Work Is Grey reveals the critical ways we must rethink work amid demographic\, economic and productivity upheaval. \nJoin Dan as he provides a 20-minute TED Talk-style presentation focused squarely on the critical issue of Age Debt and the solutions that he calls the Experience Dividend. Snack and refreshments provided. Book signing and mingling will follow Dan’s talk. This event is free\, but please RSVP here as capacity is limited. \nMore about Upstart & Crow: \nUpstart & Crow is a not-for-profit creative studio and literary incubator that champions writers\, readers and stories\, and the role they play in shaping our lives. We develop original programs\, support artists and revel in creative projects focused on Literature In Translation / Climate Solutions / Poetry / Civic Dialogue / Community & Skills Building … all with the aim of elevating the role of literature and storytelling in our lives. Find us on Granville Island\, Gibsons and online at upstartandcrow.com. \nAccessibility: \nThe main studio of our shop is accessible for folks with mobility aids. There is a washroom on the main floor available for attendees. \nQuestions: hello[at]upstartandcrow.com.

SUMMARY:An Evening with Eve Joseph and Patrick Friesen
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a beautiful evening of poetry with local legends Eve Joseph and Patrick Friesen. The duo will be launching their latest collections and invite you to join them in readings and conversation. Tickets are free\, but please RSVP for your spot here as capacity is limited. \nIn Eve Joseph’s latest book\, Dismantling\, the poet is occupied with the idea of poetic imagination and how that often elusive thing can transform the mundane into the mysterious. In a book where fish are classified as bees and rivers are legally people\, things are not always as they seem. As the title suggests\, sometimes the act of taking something apart and building again from scratch allows a poem to find its true form. \nThe poems in Patrick Friesen’s latest collection\, Sightings\, move between the visible and invisible\, between the contradictions of human history and the immediacy of a complex present. Friesen examines memory and music\, rivers and personalities\, open to all possibilities and sceptical of wisdom. Instead\, these poems rely on the kind of knowledge that comes from experience: tremors and fragments riding on the movement of thinking. The distance from Friesen’s first book\, published 50 years ago\, to this one\, speaks to what it means to have known the world through poetry. \nMore about Upstart & Crow: \nUpstart & Crow is a not-for-profit creative studio and literary incubator that champions writers\, readers and stories\, and the role they play in shaping our lives. SUMMARY:Upstart In Translation Book Club: Now I Surrender
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to Upstart & Crow’s In Translation Book Club\, a celebration of global literature and storytelling across languages and borders! This free\, bi-monthly event in our studio space introduces readers to powerful voices writing in languages other than English\, amplifying fresh perspectives\, underheard narratives and bold ideas. \nOn Wednesday\, April 29 at 6:00pm\, we’ll be discussing Now I Surrender\, by Álvaro Enrigue\, translated by Natasha Wimmer. \nIn 1886\, famed Apache leader Geronimo surrendered to the U.S. army after decades of resistance across the borderlands of Mexico and the United States. Álvaro Enrigue’s newly translated novel takes its title from his words: “Once I moved about like the wind. Now I surrender to you and that is all.” \nBeginning with the kidnapping of a Mexican woman\, the novel follows the ragtag expedition sent to retrieve her — a soldier\, a sharpshooting woman known as “the Nun\,” and two devilishly charismatic Yaqui twins. Part anti-imperialist epic and part alt-western\, Now I Surrender takes apart and reassembles the mythology of the “American” borderlands to challenge the stories we think we know about conquest and resistance. The result is a gripping\, genre-bending meditation on freedom\, myth\, and the contested histories of the desert frontier. Named a most anticipated book of 2026 by The New York Times\, The Washington Post and LitHub. \nBring yourself and an open mind to discuss the book! You do not need to have purchased the book from us to attend\, but we’ll be offering a 10% discount on the title if you do. You can do so by selecting between two ticket options here. \nMore about Upstart & Crow: \nUpstart & Crow is a not-for-profit creative studio and literary incubator that champions writers\, readers and stories\, and the role they play in shaping our lives. SUMMARY:Drawing Is Important: A Daily Practice Workshop
DESCRIPTION:What if the secret to becoming a better artist was just showing up with the most basic drawing tools and minimal time commitment? In this hands-on workshop inspired by his new book Drawing Is Important\, award-winning illustrator and teacher Tom Froese will guide you through the building blocks of a daily drawing practice — and then prove you can start one right here and now. \nWe’ll begin by looking at the obstacles that keep us from drawing more and how to overcome them. Then\, Tom will share his own daily drawing practice from the past two decades. Next\, we’ll pick up our Sharpies and draw from some very local inspiration — the birds of Granville Island: crows\, seagulls\, Canada geese! Tom will share his two-step method for drawing in a more unique style and offer key insights for overcoming perfectionism. \nBy the end of the night\, you’ll have a a few sketchbook pages worth of drawings — and the beginning of a daily practice. No drawing experience required. Supplies provided\, though we encourage you to bring your own sketchbooks. Copies of Drawing Is Important will be available for purchase and signing. \nGiveaways! \nAll attendees will be eligible to win a signed copy of Drawing is Important. Names will be drawn randomly near end of event. \n\n\n\n\nThe registration fee for this event is $10. All proceeds of the event go to Upstart & Crow’s non-profit programming\, including writer residencies\, book clubs\, grants and more. SUMMARY:litty Book Club: The Wall Dancers
DESCRIPTION:The litty book club is your chance to read the books everyone’s talking about before they’re talking about them. Created by readers and for readers\, the litty book club is a bi-monthly function and a welcoming space for strong opinions and lively conversation around a curation of litty’s prospects — newly published books the litty team believe have the best chances of ending up on critics’ end of year lists. \nJoin us as we dive into The Wall Dancers by Yi-Ling Liu\, a gripping and deeply reported exploration of China’s internet firewall and the communities pushing back against it. Blending contemporary politics\, culture\, and human stories of resistance\, the book has been praised by Jonathan Blitzer as a “masterwork” and compared to past litty selections like Some People Need Killing by Patricia Evangelista. Come ready for a thoughtful\, engaging discussion on April 17th — we look forward to reading with you. \nThis event is free to attend. You do not need to purchase the book from us to attend\, but we’ll be offering a 10% discount on the title if you do. You can do so by selecting between two ticket options here. \nMore about litty: \nFounded by Hamish Clark\, Mark Perez and Sarchen Starke\, litty.ca gathers the most trusted end-of-year book lists from critics\, publishers\, and reviewers\, then brings them together in one place. No endless scrolling — just the books worth your time\, all neatly in one spot. \nMore about Upstart & Crow: \nUpstart & Crow is a not-for-profit creative studio and literary incubator that champions writers\, readers and stories\, and the role they play in shaping our lives. SUMMARY:‘The Fifth Season’: An Evening of Poetry with Cori Howard
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening to celebrate the launch of Cori Howard’s new poetry collection\, The Fifth Season\, out now from Caitlin Press. Expect a great evening of cocktails\, conversation and poetry about marriage\, motherhood\, divorce\, dating\, desire and midlife reinvention. Howard will be in conversation with fellow poet\, Andrea MacPherson\, who will read from her latest poetry collection\, Reckless. The event will be hosted by former Vancouver poet laureate\, and award-winning poet and author\, Rachel Rose. \nThe Fifth Season explores the seasons of a woman’s life\, from marriage and motherhood to divorce\, disaster dating and reinvention. Through the arc of midlife\, these poems offer a map back to the self and a return to longing and new freedoms. In poetry that is raw\, honest and personal\, Howard carries the reader through the thresholds of her life\, illuminating the experiences of womanhood and the questions we ask ourselves during times of transition and reimagination. \nMcPherson’s Reckless follows the complex trajectory of female identity in a world that consistently denies women their right to assert it. These poems tackle an array of urgent topics women face throughout their lives including reproductive rights\, the trials of motherhood\, the pain of divorce and sexual emancipation.  \nBooks will be on hand for sale and signing. This event is free\, but please RSVP for your spot here as capacity is limited. \nMore about Upstart & Crow: \nUpstart & Crow is a not-for-profit creative studio and literary incubator that champions writers\, readers and stories\, and the role they play in shaping our lives. SUMMARY:Suzuki at 90: In Conversation with Gloria Macarenko
DESCRIPTION:At 90 years old\, David Suzuki continues to provoke new thinking and promote more urgent action by all of us concerned about the impact of climate change — and what it portends for human survival on our one planet. Join us on Wednesday\, April 1 at 7:30 p.m. to launch Lessons From a Lifetime\, and join in an once-in-a-generation celebration of a life spent reshaping how we understand science\, justice and our relationship to the natural world. The book is co-authored by Ian Hanington. \nIn conversation with beloved CBC journalist\, Gloria Macarenko\, hear directly from Suzuki as he reflects on the experiences that shaped his extraordinary path — from surviving an internment camp to a career as a pioneering geneticist and one of North America’s most trusted voices in science communication. All proceeds of the event go to Upstart & Crow’s non-profit climate programming\, including writer residencies\, book clubs\, grants and more.  \nTickets & book sales: \nTickets are $25 per person. Each ticket includes a $10 discount on Lessons From a Lifetime\, redeemable at the event. SUMMARY:In Trees: A Book Launch with Robert Moor
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the Beer Farm to celebrate the new book by acclaimed local writer\, Robert Moor: In Trees: An Exploration. The book promises to be a wondrous journey through the wilds of nature and the gnarls of history\, exploring how trees — from the mightiest sequoia to the tiniest bonsai — can teach us to grow wise.  \nOne day\, on a whim\, Robert set out to climb a tree near his home — unwittingly embarking on what would become a decade-long adventure of intellectual and spiritual transformation\, leading him to spend time in trees around the world. Along the way\, Moor learns the art of “tree-thinking\,” which\, he discovers\, has the power to break open some of humanity’s oldest questions: What is the secret to truly growing old? How do we set down deeper roots in an increasingly chaotic world? Most importantly\, how should we — as individuals\, as communities\, as stewards of the earth — live? \nA witty and relentlessly curious excursion through philosophy\, history\, and science\, what begins as an ode to the miracle of trees blossoms into a joyous\, daring\, fiercely hopeful endeavour to arborize humanity. \nThis event takes place in Persephone’s tasting room\, with books on site for sale and signing. And of course\, there will be beer. RSVPs are not mandatory but help us consider numbers\, so please RSVP here if you plan on attending. Thank you!  \nAbout Persephone Brewing Company: \nPersephone Brewing Company is an 11-acre craft brewery and certified B Corp in Gibsons that blends regenerative agriculture with high-quality beer production. Known as “The Beer Farm\,” it features an organic farm\, hop yard\, orchard and tasting room\, producing beer with locally sourced ingredients. SUMMARY:Decolonizing Time: Two Workshops on Embracing Alternative Timelines
DESCRIPTION:In these two generative writing workshops\, we’ll unpack a deceptively simple question: how do we measure time\, and who decides? \nAcross cultures and histories\, people have marked time in countless ways: lunar cycles\, agricultural seasons\, ceremonial calendars\, migrations\, tides\, and harvests. The familiar Gregorian calendar is only one system among many. What might it mean to look beyond it\, and what new ways of imagining time might open up if we do? \nIn Part 1 (Tuesday\, March 24 at 6pm)\, we’ll look at alternate calendar systems from around the world — including lunar\, lunisolar\, and Indigenous seasonal calendars — and think about how different communities have organized life around cycles of land\, food\, ceremony\, and movement. In what’s known as Australia\, there are at least nine different calendars among various Aboriginal nations; in what’s known as Manitoba\, Canada\, Opaskwayak Cree Nation people use a 13 moon system; in what’s known as British Columbia\, likewise Stó:lō Nation people name their 13 moons according to local land and waterway cycles. Together\, we’ll discuss how these ways of marking time connect to broader questions about culture\, land\, and diaspora\, before moving into generative writing exercises. \nIn Part 2 (Tuesday\, April 7 at 6pm)\, we’ll take a more speculative turn. Drawing inspiration from futurist and diasporic traditions such as Sino-Futurism and other Global Majority futurisms\, we’ll explore how writers imagine entirely new timelines and ways of inhabiting the future. What happens when we invent new calendars\, new rhythms\, or new measures of time? Through conversation and creative prompts\, we’ll experiment with writing that bends\, stretches\, or reimagines time altogether. \nAlongside writing and discussion\, we’ll also host a small seed swap. Participants are encouraged to bring seeds they’d like to trade — though if you don’t have any to share\, seeds will be provided. \nParticipants are welcome to attend either workshop independently. One registration gives you access to both sessions\, so you’re free to join one or attend both. Please select between three ticket options. To ensure event attendance and to help us cover costs\, the registration fee is $10. Please RSVP here to reserve your spot. \nMore about Upstart & Crow: \nUpstart & Crow is a not-for-profit creative studio and literary incubator that champions writers\, readers and stories\, and the role they play in shaping our lives. SUMMARY:Time\, Memory\, Nostalgia: An Evening of Bulgarian Literature & Visual Art
DESCRIPTION:“Gospodinov’s tuga is ‘a longing for something that hasn’t happened . . . a sudden realization that life is slipping away and that certain things will never happen to you\, for a whole list of reasons—personal\, geographical\, political.” — Garth Greenwell\, The Bulgarian Sadness of Georgi Gospodinov.  \nJoin us on Tuesday\, March 3 at 6:30pm for a special edition of our Translation Spotlight series. Part literary salon\, part gallery reception\, this post-dinner gathering will bring contemporary Bulgarian literature into conversation with an accompanying exhibition of visual work by Biliana Velkova. \nGuided by Biliana and Milena Droumeva\, you’ll be introduced to a curated reading list of translated works by Bulgarian writers\, all of which grapple with nostalgia\, post‑communist identity\, fragmented memory\, collective history\, and borders. Threading through these readings is tuga — an untranslatable Bulgarian word for a deep\, enduring melancholy — through which you’ll be offered a portrait of Bulgarian life after the collapse of communism and within its present realities. \nYou’ll also be the first to enjoy an exhibition of Biliana Velkova’s Balkan Weather Tales\, displayed throughout our Granville Island studio. This series features works on paper\, in gouache\, oil pastel and gold leaf. Once brought to life through song and oral tradition\, the pieces reimagine Bulgarian folklore. Here\, creatures resurface in layered\, hypnotic drawings that bridge ancient belief systems with contemporary anxieties. \nCome take a seat at our long table and enjoy an evening of Bulgarian literature\, art\, food\, and conversation. Spaces are very limited\, so please RSVP here. \nMore about Upstart & Crow: \nUpstart & Crow is a not-for-profit creative studio and literary incubator that champions writers\, readers and stories\, and the role they play in shaping our lives. Tickets are $250 per person. But if you’re coming with a special someone\, pairs can register together for $400. Please select between two ticket types here. \nThis intensive is offered in tandem with our poetry workshop with Kyla Jamieson. Participants registered for printmaking will receive a complimentary ticket to the poetry workshop\, though attendance at both is optional. Those who choose to take part in both will have the opportunity to bring what they write with Kyla to New Leaf Studio. \nMore about New Leaf Editions: \nOn the eastern end of Granville Island\, the part tourists tend to ignore\, stands New Leaf Editions. For nearly four decades\, New Leaf Editions has been pushing the boundaries of printmaking. Collaborating with artists such as Bill Reid\, Robert Bateman\, and Rebecca Belmore\, the studio has produced an extraordinary range of works\, each reflecting their contemporary vision for what print can be. The printing company\, established in 1985 and owned by Master Printer Peter Braune\, stands in great contrast to the typical printing spaces of French monks and Benjamin Franklin\, bringing a traditional art form to contemporary Vancouver. \nAccessibility: \nThe main studio at New Leaf is accessible for folks with mobility aids. There is a washroom on the main floor available for attendees. \nQuestions: hello[at]upstartandcrow.com.

SUMMARY:Storytelling in Science & Research: A Non-Fiction Writing Workshop with Journalist Anne Shibata Casselman
DESCRIPTION:What if your research did more than convey facts\, but could move people? \nJoin journalist Anne Shibata Casselman for a one-of-a-kind writing workshop that invites researchers to explore how storytelling can bring science to life on the page. \nTo help uncover the essential message you want to convey\, we’ll begin by distilling your research into a single haiku — 17 evocative syllables to focus one’s aim. SUMMARY:Reconciling: A Night with Larry Grant and Scott Steedman
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special event with Elder Larry Grant and Scott Steedman to honour their new book\, Reconciling: A Lifelong Struggle to Belong. This will be a can’t-miss event for anyone interested in Vancouver history and environmentalism. \nIt’s taken most of Larry’s long life for his extraordinary heritage to be appreciated. He was born in a hop field outside Vancouver in 1936\, the son of a Musqueam cultural leader and an immigrant from a village in Guangdong\, China. In 1940\, when the Indian agent discovered that their mother had married a non-status man\, Larry and his two siblings were stripped of their status. With one stroke of the pen\, they were disenfranchised—no longer recognized as Indigenous. \nReconciling is a series of conversations between Larry and writer Scott Steedman as they visit pivotal geographical places together\, including the Musqueam reserve\, Chinatown\, the site of the Mission residential school\, the Vancouver docks and the University of British Columbia. Larry tells the story of his life\, including his thoughts on reconciliation and the path forward for First Nations and Canada. His life echoes the barely known story of Vancouver and spans key events of the last two centuries\, including Chinese immigration and the Head Tax\, the ravages of residential school and now Indigenous revival and the accompanying change in worldview. \nThis is a free event\, but please RSVP here for your spot as capacity is limited. Books will be on hand for sale and signing. Thank you to publisher ECW Press for partnering on this event. \nMore about Upstart & Crow: \nUpstart & Crow is a not-for-profit creative studio and literary incubator that champions writers\, readers and stories\, and the role they play in shaping our lives. SUMMARY:Make Sneaky Art: A Drawing Workshop with Nishant Jain
DESCRIPTION:How would your life change if\, whenever you had a free moment\, you could reach for a sketchbook instead of your phone? \nJoin us on Saturday\, January 24 at 6pm for a special “sneaky sketching” workshop with philosopher\, scientist\, engineer\, writer — and now artist — Nishant Jain. \nAfter moving to the U.S.\, Nishant began carrying a sketchbook as a way to make sense of a new place and a new life. Hesitant to do “the silly thing” in public\, he developed a practice he calls “sneaky art”: quick\, discreet sketches made in spare moments — on transit\, in cafés\, between errands. Over time\, the habit became a way of paying closer attention to the world. \nWe’re welcoming Nishant to our studio for a special hands-on workshop inspired by ideas and techniques from his recent book\, Make (Sneaky) Art. Through quick-drawing exercises\, participants will learn to close the hesitation gap and make lines with confidence. You’ll practice how to sketch without overthinking\, and discover how even a few minutes can be enough to make art. \nThis workshop is perfect for both experienced artists and those just starting out. No prior artistic experience is needed! \nTo ensure event attendance and to help us cover costs\, this event is $10. Please RSVP here to reserve your spot. If you are experiencing barriers to attend\, please reach out over email. We’re happy to provide you with one of our scholarship spots. \nMore about Upstart & Crow: \nUpstart & Crow is a not-for-profit creative studio and literary incubator that champions writers\, readers and stories\, and the role they play in shaping our lives. SUMMARY:Translation Spotlight: Ukraine\, Looking at History
DESCRIPTION:Step out of the winter chill and into an evening of Ukrainian food\, drink\, and extraordinary translated literature. \nOn Friday\, January 9 at 6:30 p.m.\, join us for a special edition of our Translation Spotlight series — Ukraine — presented in partnership with Maple Hope Foundation. \nNot a typical literary talk\, you’ll be gathered around our long table for a chance to taste traditional Ukrainian food and drink\, participate in discussion\, and learn about writers who carry both ancestral history and the immediacy of invasion into their work. \nGuided by Svitlana Matviyenko (Associate Professor of Critical Media Analysis at SFU) and Alina Senchenko (Ukrainian Canadian artist and curator)\, we’ll explore remarkable works of translated prose and poetry that trace the twisted routes of intimate and collective histories\, asking how some events persist in memory while others are erased\, obscured\, or slip through the cracks of remembrance. All of these works bear witness to Russia’s ongoing invasion\, and open a human-centred dialogue on how literature can help carry impossible stories. \nYou’ll leave with a specially curated reading list of Ukrainian writers to explore\, and selected books will be available for purchase. \nThis event will also include a poetry reading by Elizabeth Bachinsky. \nOur Translation Spotlight events are intimate and open to a limited amount of participants. To support our non-profit programming and to help us cover costs\, this event is $30. Spots go quickly\, so please RSVP here. \nMore about Maple Hope Foundation: Maple Hope Foundation emerged from the global Ukrainian volunteer movement in 2014\, which began in response to the Euromaidan in Kyiv. Their founding members first connected during the solidarity marches held in Vancouver nine years ago and their mission is to support displaced Ukrainians in Canada and Ukrainians on the ground in their response and resistance to Russia’s unprovoked invasion. \nMore about Upstart & Crow: \nUpstart & Crow is a not-for-profit creative studio and literary incubator that champions writers\, readers and stories\, and the role they play in shaping our lives.
