SUMMARY:In Trees: A Book Launch with Robert Moor
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the Beer Farm to celebrate the new book by acclaimed local writer\, Robert Moor: In Trees: An Exploration. The book promises to be a wondrous journey through the wilds of nature and the gnarls of history\, exploring how trees — from the mightiest sequoia to the tiniest bonsai — can teach us to grow wise.  \nOne day\, on a whim\, Robert set out to climb a tree near his home — unwittingly embarking on what would become a decade-long adventure of intellectual and spiritual transformation\, leading him to spend time in trees around the world. Along the way\, Moor learns the art of “tree-thinking\,” which\, he discovers\, has the power to break open some of humanity’s oldest questions: What is the secret to truly growing old? How do we set down deeper roots in an increasingly chaotic world? Most importantly\, how should we — as individuals\, as communities\, as stewards of the earth — live? \nA witty and relentlessly curious excursion through philosophy\, history\, and science\, what begins as an ode to the miracle of trees blossoms into a joyous\, daring\, fiercely hopeful endeavour to arborize humanity. \nThis event takes place in Persephone’s tasting room\, with books on site for sale and signing. And of course\, there will be beer. RSVPs are not mandatory but help us consider numbers\, so please RSVP here if you plan on attending. Thank you!  \nAbout Persephone Brewing Company: \nPersephone Brewing Company is an 11-acre craft brewery and certified B Corp in Gibsons that blends regenerative agriculture with high-quality beer production. Known as “The Beer Farm\,” it features an organic farm\, hop yard\, orchard and tasting room\, producing beer with locally sourced ingredients. It’s also host to Upstart Upstairs\, a little bookshop located above the tasting room.

SUMMARY:Decolonizing Time: Two Workshops on Embracing Alternative Timelines
DESCRIPTION:In these two generative writing workshops\, we’ll unpack a deceptively simple question: how do we measure time\, and who decides? \nAcross cultures and histories\, people have marked time in countless ways: lunar cycles\, agricultural seasons\, ceremonial calendars\, migrations\, tides\, and harvests. The familiar Gregorian calendar is only one system among many. What might it mean to look beyond it\, and what new ways of imagining time might open up if we do? \nIn Part 1 (Tuesday\, March 24 at 6pm)\, we’ll look at alternate calendar systems from around the world — including lunar\, lunisolar\, and Indigenous seasonal calendars — and think about how different communities have organized life around cycles of land\, food\, ceremony\, and movement. In what’s known as Australia\, there are at least nine different calendars among various Aboriginal nations; in what’s known as Manitoba\, Canada\, Opaskwayak Cree Nation people use a 13 moon system; in what’s known as British Columbia\, likewise Stó:lō Nation people name their 13 moons according to local land and waterway cycles. Together\, we’ll discuss how these ways of marking time connect to broader questions about culture\, land\, and diaspora\, before moving into generative writing exercises. \nIn Part 2 (Tuesday\, April 7 at 6pm)\, we’ll take a more speculative turn. Drawing inspiration from futurist and diasporic traditions such as Sino-Futurism and other Global Majority futurisms\, we’ll explore how writers imagine entirely new timelines and ways of inhabiting the future. What happens when we invent new calendars\, new rhythms\, or new measures of time? Through conversation and creative prompts\, we’ll experiment with writing that bends\, stretches\, or reimagines time altogether. \nAlongside writing and discussion\, we’ll also host a small seed swap. Participants are encouraged to bring seeds they’d like to trade — though if you don’t have any to share\, seeds will be provided. \nParticipants are welcome to attend either workshop independently. One registration gives you access to both sessions\, so you’re free to join one or attend both. Please select between three ticket options. To ensure event attendance and to help us cover costs\, the registration fee is $10. Please RSVP here to reserve your spot. \nMore about Upstart & Crow: \nUpstart & Crow is a not-for-profit creative studio and literary incubator that champions writers\, readers and stories\, and the role they play in shaping our lives. SUMMARY:Women Talking Climate

SUMMARY:Time\, Memory\, Nostalgia: An Evening of Bulgarian Literature & Visual Art
DESCRIPTION:“Gospodinov’s tuga is ‘a longing for something that hasn’t happened . . . a sudden realization that life is slipping away and that certain things will never happen to you\, for a whole list of reasons—personal\, geographical\, political.” — Garth Greenwell\, The Bulgarian Sadness of Georgi Gospodinov.  \nJoin us on Tuesday\, March 3 at 6:30pm for a special edition of our Translation Spotlight series. Part literary salon\, part gallery reception\, this post-dinner gathering will bring contemporary Bulgarian literature into conversation with an accompanying exhibition of visual work by Biliana Velkova. \nGuided by Biliana and Milena Droumeva\, you’ll be introduced to a curated reading list of translated works by Bulgarian writers\, all of which grapple with nostalgia\, post‑communist identity\, fragmented memory\, collective history\, and borders. Threading through these readings is tuga — an untranslatable Bulgarian word for a deep\, enduring melancholy — through which you’ll be offered a portrait of Bulgarian life after the collapse of communism and within its present realities. \nYou’ll also be the first to enjoy an exhibition of Biliana Velkova’s Balkan Weather Tales\, displayed throughout our Granville Island studio. This series features works on paper\, in gouache\, oil pastel and gold leaf. Once brought to life through song and oral tradition\, the pieces reimagine Bulgarian folklore. Here\, creatures resurface in layered\, hypnotic drawings that bridge ancient belief systems with contemporary anxieties. \nCome take a seat at our long table and enjoy an evening of Bulgarian literature\, art\, food\, and conversation. Spaces are very limited\, so please RSVP here. \nMore about Upstart & Crow: \nUpstart & Crow is a not-for-profit creative studio and literary incubator that champions writers\, readers and stories\, and the role they play in shaping our lives. SUMMARY:‘Nothing But Time’: An Evening with José Teodoro
DESCRIPTION:Join us in celebrating the Vancouver launch of José Teodoro’s Nothing But Time: Conversations with Peter Mettler about Life and Cinema\, out now from the great Anvil Press.\n\nIn the cosmology of Canadian cinema\, Peter Mettler is our seeker. With the release of the auteur’s latest and most ambitious film\, While the Green Grass Grows: A Diary in Seven Parts\, there has never been a better time to discover Mettler’s singular body of work. \nThe product of 11 years of conversations with playwright and author José Teodoro\, undertaken in various locations in Mettler’s two home countries of Canada and Switzerland\, Nothing But Time explores this extraordinary artist’s life and practice\, which brims with tales of uncanny coincidence\, dynamic collaborations with fellow artists such as Atom Egoyan\, Jennifer Baichwal and Jim O’Rourke\, and countless encounters with visionaries from the worlds of science and spirituality. \nIn Mettler’s story\, the yearning for knowledge is balanced with the surrender to boundless mystery\, until the tenets that guide his art and life dissolve and cohere in an uncommon commitment to cultivating our collective sense of wonder. \nWe can’t wait for this evening of readings\, refreshments\, and conversations about cinema. With special guests Mateusz West and Lois Anderson. This event is free\, but please RSVP for your spot here as capacity is limited. SUMMARY:Printed with Love: A Valentine’s Printmaking Workshop with New Leaf Editions
DESCRIPTION:This Valentine’s Day\, Friday\, February 14\, we’re teaming up with the legendary New Leaf Editions for a special\, all-day printmaking intensive all about love. \nWorking in the tradition of one of Vancouver’s most singular print studios\, you’ll learn the essentials of letterpress and print — including inking techniques\, how to set your own type\, operate the press\, and how to print linocuts — all with hands-on guidance from New Leaf’s founder and Master Printer\, Peter Braune. \nParticipants are encouraged to bring a short snippet\, a few lines from a favourite love poem\, letter\, or text to transform into a printed broadsheet and keepsake. This all-day workshop is perfect for anyone who wants to spend Valentine’s Day making something meaningful\, by hand\, and in good company. \nThis is a full-day intensive with all materials included\, so spaces are limited! Tickets are $250 per person. But if you’re coming with a special someone\, pairs can register together for $400. Please select between two ticket types here. \nThis intensive is offered in tandem with our poetry workshop with Kyla Jamieson. Participants registered for printmaking will receive a complimentary ticket to the poetry workshop\, though attendance at both is optional. Those who choose to take part in both will have the opportunity to bring what they write with Kyla to New Leaf Studio. \nMore about New Leaf Editions: \nOn the eastern end of Granville Island\, the part tourists tend to ignore\, stands New Leaf Editions. For nearly four decades\, New Leaf Editions has been pushing the boundaries of printmaking. Collaborating with artists such as Bill Reid\, Robert Bateman\, and Rebecca Belmore\, the studio has produced an extraordinary range of works\, each reflecting their contemporary vision for what print can be. The printing company\, established in 1985 and owned by Master Printer Peter Braune\, stands in great contrast to the typical printing spaces of French monks and Benjamin Franklin\, bringing a traditional art form to contemporary Vancouver. \nMore about Upstart & Crow: \nUpstart & Crow is a not-for-profit creative studio and literary incubator that champions writers\, readers and stories\, and the role they play in shaping our lives. SUMMARY:Every Poem is a Love Poem: A Poetry Workshop with Kyla Jamieson
DESCRIPTION:According to the poet Chen Chen\, “poetry matters because it nourishes the heart.” Likewise\, the heart nourishes poetry. In this workshop\, we’ll look at poets and authors who engage with love as their subject matter or as a guiding principle for their writing. \nParticipants will learn about poetic forms and tools\, reflect on who and what they love\, and experiment with ways of incorporating these methods and considerations into their writing. Through reading\, discussion\, and writing\, we will trace connections between love and creative expression. \nThis workshop is designed for anyone who wishes to develop or deepen their writing practice. All levels of familiarity with language and poetry are welcome. We will be reading poems in English\, but English fluency is not required. \nPlease bring a notebook and pen\, or whichever tools or technology you prefer to write with. Participants are also encouraged to bring a favourite quote about love or a definition of love that resonates with them. \nTo ensure event attendance and to help us cover costs\, this event is $15. Please RSVP here to reserve your spot. If you are experiencing barriers to attend\, please reach out over email. We’re happy to provide you with one of our scholarship spots. \nThis workshop is offered in tandem with our all-day Valentine’s printmaking intensive at New Leaf Editions. Participants registered for printmaking will receive a complimentary ticket to this poetry workshop\, though attendance at both is optional. Those who choose to take part in both will have the opportunity to bring what they write here to New Leaf Studio\, where they will learn how to set type\, print lino and produce a finished broadsheet. If you are registered for printmaking and want to attend this poetry workshop\, please email us to let us know. \nMore about Upstart & Crow: \nUpstart & Crow is a not-for-profit creative studio and literary incubator that champions writers\, readers and stories\, and the role they play in shaping our lives. SUMMARY:Storytelling in Science & Research: A Non-Fiction Writing Workshop with Journalist Anne Shibata Casselman
DESCRIPTION:What if your research did more than convey facts\, but could move people? \nJoin journalist Anne Shibata Casselman for a one-of-a-kind writing workshop that invites researchers to explore how storytelling can bring science to life on the page. \nTo help uncover the essential message you want to convey\, we’ll begin by distilling your research into a single haiku — 17 evocative syllables to focus one’s aim. Next\, you’ll learn how to strengthen the salience of your writing through narrative elements and metaphors\, and how to think holistically about your work. \nParticipants are encouraged to bring small props from their scientific world\, along with books or articles that represent their gold standard in science writing. \nThis workshop is designed for scientists\, researchers\, climate writers\, and anyone interested in developing their non-fiction skills in a fun\, low-pressure environment. SUMMARY:Reconciling: A Night with Larry Grant and Scott Steedman
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special event with Elder Larry Grant and Scott Steedman to honour their new book\, Reconciling: A Lifelong Struggle to Belong. This will be a can’t-miss event for anyone interested in Vancouver history and environmentalism. \nIt’s taken most of Larry’s long life for his extraordinary heritage to be appreciated. He was born in a hop field outside Vancouver in 1936\, the son of a Musqueam cultural leader and an immigrant from a village in Guangdong\, China. In 1940\, when the Indian agent discovered that their mother had married a non-status man\, Larry and his two siblings were stripped of their status. With one stroke of the pen\, they were disenfranchised—no longer recognized as Indigenous. \nReconciling is a series of conversations between Larry and writer Scott Steedman as they visit pivotal geographical places together\, including the Musqueam reserve\, Chinatown\, the site of the Mission residential school\, the Vancouver docks and the University of British Columbia. Larry tells the story of his life\, including his thoughts on reconciliation and the path forward for First Nations and Canada. His life echoes the barely known story of Vancouver and spans key events of the last two centuries\, including Chinese immigration and the Head Tax\, the ravages of residential school and now Indigenous revival and the accompanying change in worldview. \nThis is a free event\, but please RSVP here for your spot as capacity is limited. Books will be on hand for sale and signing. Thank you to publisher ECW Press for partnering on this event. \nMore about Upstart & Crow: \nUpstart & Crow is a not-for-profit creative studio and literary incubator that champions writers\, readers and stories\, and the role they play in shaping our lives. SUMMARY:Make Sneaky Art: A Drawing Workshop with Nishant Jain
DESCRIPTION:How would your life change if\, whenever you had a free moment\, you could reach for a sketchbook instead of your phone? \nJoin us on Saturday\, January 24 at 6pm for a special “sneaky sketching” workshop with philosopher\, scientist\, engineer\, writer — and now artist — Nishant Jain. \nAfter moving to the U.S.\, Nishant began carrying a sketchbook as a way to make sense of a new place and a new life. Hesitant to do “the silly thing” in public\, he developed a practice he calls “sneaky art”: quick\, discreet sketches made in spare moments — on transit\, in cafés\, between errands. Over time\, the habit became a way of paying closer attention to the world. \nWe’re welcoming Nishant to our studio for a special hands-on workshop inspired by ideas and techniques from his recent book\, Make (Sneaky) Art. Through quick-drawing exercises\, participants will learn to close the hesitation gap and make lines with confidence. You’ll practice how to sketch without overthinking\, and discover how even a few minutes can be enough to make art. \nThis workshop is perfect for both experienced artists and those just starting out. No prior artistic experience is needed! \nTo ensure event attendance and to help us cover costs\, this event is $10. Please RSVP here to reserve your spot. If you are experiencing barriers to attend\, please reach out over email. We’re happy to provide you with one of our scholarship spots. \nMore about Upstart & Crow: \nUpstart & Crow is a not-for-profit creative studio and literary incubator that champions writers\, readers and stories\, and the role they play in shaping our lives. SUMMARY:Translation Spotlight: Ukraine\, Looking at History
DESCRIPTION:Step out of the winter chill and into an evening of Ukrainian food\, drink\, and extraordinary translated literature. \nOn Friday\, January 9 at 6:30 p.m.\, join us for a special edition of our Translation Spotlight series — Ukraine — presented in partnership with Maple Hope Foundation. \nNot a typical literary talk\, you’ll be gathered around our long table for a chance to taste traditional Ukrainian food and drink\, participate in discussion\, and learn about writers who carry both ancestral history and the immediacy of invasion into their work. \nGuided by Svitlana Matviyenko (Associate Professor of Critical Media Analysis at SFU) and Alina Senchenko (Ukrainian Canadian artist and curator)\, we’ll explore remarkable works of translated prose and poetry that trace the twisted routes of intimate and collective histories\, asking how some events persist in memory while others are erased\, obscured\, or slip through the cracks of remembrance. All of these works bear witness to Russia’s ongoing invasion\, and open a human-centred dialogue on how literature can help carry impossible stories. \nYou’ll leave with a specially curated reading list of Ukrainian writers to explore\, and selected books will be available for purchase. \nThis event will also include a poetry reading by Elizabeth Bachinsky. \nOur Translation Spotlight events are intimate and open to a limited amount of participants. To support our non-profit programming and to help us cover costs\, this event is $30. Spots go quickly\, so please RSVP here. \nMore about Maple Hope Foundation: Maple Hope Foundation emerged from the global Ukrainian volunteer movement in 2014\, which began in response to the Euromaidan in Kyiv. Their founding members first connected during the solidarity marches held in Vancouver nine years ago and their mission is to support displaced Ukrainians in Canada and Ukrainians on the ground in their response and resistance to Russia’s unprovoked invasion. \nMore about Upstart & Crow: \nUpstart & Crow is a not-for-profit creative studio and literary incubator that champions writers\, readers and stories\, and the role they play in shaping our lives. SUMMARY:In Translation Book Club: The Wax Child
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to Upstart & Crow’s In Translation Book Club\, a celebration of global literature and storytelling across languages and borders! This free\, bi-monthly event in our studio space introduces readers to powerful voices writing in languages other than English\, amplifying fresh perspectives\, underheard narratives and bold ideas. \nAfter a brief summer reprieve\, we’re back with a darker read to accompany you through spooky season — The Wax Child\, by Olga Ravn\, translated from Danish by Martin Aitken. \nFans of Robert Eggers\, rejoice: Olga Ravn’s brand new novel revisits an infamous seventeenth-century witch trial in Northern Jutland told through the strange\, all-seeing eyes of a wax doll who yearns for her lost maker. Dark and beautiful\, the story follows Christenze Kruckow and several women accused of witchcraft\, their lives punctuated by whispers of the Devil and the threat of the stake. Interwoven with original archival sources — letters\, spells\, and court records — Ravn reconstructs a fragile world where the true horror lies not in the supernatural\, but in the brutality of people influenced by suspicion\, gendered violence\, and the will to dominate. \nWe’ll be discussing it on Wednesday\, November 26 at 6:00pm. Bring yourself and an open mind to discuss the book! That’s all. \nYou do not need to have purchased the book from us to attend\, but we’ll be offering a 10% discount on the title if you do. You can do so by selecting between two ticket options. RSVP here. \nMore about Upstart & Crow: \nUpstart & Crow is a not-for-profit creative studio and literary incubator that champions writers\, readers and stories\, and the role they play in shaping our lives. SUMMARY:Poetry as Research Method: “don’t panic! and don’t write nature poems!”
DESCRIPTION:In this workshop\, we’ll consider poetry as a kind of research method that can help us think through crucial questions — in a time of climate crisis\, on stolen and unceded Indigenous lands: Where are we? How did we get here? What do we know\, and what do we still need to know\, about how to be here\, now? \nAs we are different people\, and different writers\, and as we have different relationships with the land\, and with ourselves\, we need different things. Our goal in this workshop\, then\, is to begin to develop poetry-research plans for ourselves\, in a mutually supportive and resource-sharing way. \nOur facilitator\, Fenn Stewart\, will share some of what she has learned from other writers and artists who are working through their own relationships with birds\, bears\, colonialism\, “Canada\,” other homelands\, other home nations\, other ancestors\, highways\, diasporas\, gardening\, zucchinis\, zebra mussels\, salmon\, lawns\, hiking trails\, and poetry itself. \nFenn will also share what she’s learned from Indigenous\, anti-racist\, and anti-colonial writers about some of the frames (like “settler apocalypticism\,” and certain kinds of “nature poetry”) that some of us get stuck in\, sometimes\, when we write about land\, and place\, and climate. \nPlease come prepared to read and think and write; speaking and sharing are warmly encouraged (but not required if unpleasant for you). \nTo support our non-profit programming and to help us cover costs\, this workshop is $10. RSVP here. If you are experiencing barriers to attend\, please reach out over email. We’re happy to provide you with one of our scholarship spots. We have reserved half of our available seats for attendees who are BIPOC/PGM. Anyone who self-identifies as Black\, Indigenous and/or a Person of Colour or People of the Global Majority is welcome to reserve these tickets. \nWhat to bring: \n\nA memory of the earliest plant\, bird\, or animal that you remember becoming acquainted with\, as well as (if applicable) a memory of the person or persons who introduced to you that being.\nA memory of the earliest time you ate straight out of a forest or garden or lake or river or ocean (berries\, mushrooms\, fish\, clams).\nYour earliest memory of a seeing\, or smelling\, or feeling a wildfire.\n\nMore about Upstart & Crow: \nUpstart & Crow is a not-for-profit creative studio and literary incubator that champions writers\, readers and stories\, and the role they play in shaping our lives. SUMMARY:Sounding Out: Exploring\, Creating & Performing Text Scores with Elee Kraljii Gardiner
DESCRIPTION:A text score is\, “a collection of verbally notated meditations that may be enjoyed by anyone in a variety of ways: read as poetry\, performed alone or performed for an audience.” Pauline Oliveros\, Sonic Meditations I – XXV (1971) \nJoin us on Friday\, November 21 at 6pm for a mini-intensive workshop with Vancouver Poet Laureate\, Elee Kraljii Gardiner. \nIn this playful two-hour workshop for anyone curious about words\, performance\, and sound\, we will experiment\, create some attempts\, and expand our artistic practice as we step out of the familiar into a space of curiosity. Our form is the text score\, a piece of writing that can be an instruction\, concept\, list\, poem\, diagram (or something else!). We’ll look at text scores from artists ranging from Fluxus to Futurist\, Yoko Ono and other composers and sound artists. Then we will create our own. \nAfter the workshop\, we’ll take a 30-minute break and reconvene at 8:30pm to perform the pieces in a gently supportive “world premiere” for friends\, family\, and the public. \nWe aim to support equitable engagement and welcome explorations of vibration\, movement\, and other ideas that expand our understanding of access while challenging audism and other barriers for the Deaf or hard of hearing. \nTo ensure event attendance and to help us cover costs\, this workshop is $10. RSVP here. If you are experiencing barriers to attend\, please reach out over email. We’re happy to provide you with one of our scholarship spots. \nNo previous writing or music experience is required! \nAbout Upstart & Crow: Upstart & Crow is a not-for-profit creative studio and literary incubator that champions writers\, readers and stories\, and the role they play in shaping our lives. SUMMARY:'Razing Palestine': Vancouver Launch
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Thursday\, November 20 at 6pm as we commemorate two years of escalating violence in Gaza\, and the histories of resilience through ongoing genocide. \nWhile many institutions have chosen silence\, countless people around the world — including here in Canada — have refused to look away. Those who spoke about the carnage were punished by censure\, sanction\, smearing and worse. Across the country\, journalists were muzzled\, academics were stifled\, doctors were fired\, activists were arrested\, and artists were banned. \nRazing Palestine: Punishing Solidarity and Dissent in Canada\, edited by Leila Marshy\, gathers testimonies from these journalists\, healthcare workers\, academics\, artists\, and activists who have suffered the cost of solidarity. Their stories affirm the importance of collective resistance against colonial violence and how we might ensure that the call for a free Palestine continues to be heard. \nThis event is free\, but please RSVP here to reserve your spot. \nAbout Upstart & Crow: Upstart & Crow is a not-for-profit creative studio and literary incubator that champions writers\, readers and stories\, and the role they play in shaping our lives. SUMMARY:Writer’s Block: An Evening of Climate Writing
DESCRIPTION:Struggling to commit to your journal? Hitting a rough patch in your thesis? Feel like your op-ed is swirling the drain? As a great storyteller once said; “My world’s on fire – how about yours?” \nJoin local environmental group the sword fern collective for an evening of focused writing and community connection. \nIn these infamously unprecedented times\, climate journalists\, storytellers and artists are all battling burnout. Part-industry gathering and part-coworking session\, this event is for all of the writers out there — whether working in climate-related fields or otherwise — who need a little relief from the noise and from their typical routines. \nSword fern collective is cultivating a cozy living-room vibe at Upstart and Crow\, complete with charcuterie\, beverages\, chill music and an optional ‘phone jail’ for those craving some no-screen time. Attendees will have a short window to connect with each other\, and then we’ll settle into 45 minutes of focused\, intentional writing time. There’s no pressure to produce\, only to participate\, and you won’t be asked to share what they’ve written (unless you really want to). \nThere is limited seating\, so please RSVP here. \nI’m not a journalist or a grad student. Can I come? \nYes! We define a climate writer as anyone who writes things that interface with the climate. This includes poetry\, journal entries\, short stories\, articles\, essays\, or letters to your representative. We welcome all mediums and experience levels. \nWhat food are you serving? \nWe’ll be serving a vegetarian charcuterie board. There will be gluten\, dairy\, and nut-free options available\, but please note we cannot protect against cross contamination. There will also be non-alcoholic beverages available. \nAbout Upstart & Crow: Upstart & Crow is a not-for-profit creative studio and literary incubator that champions writers\, readers and stories\, and the role they play in shaping our lives. SUMMARY:‘Starting from Here’: Book Launch
DESCRIPTION:Join us in celebrating the launch of Paula Saunders’s new novel\, Starting from Here\, a coming-of-age tale about a young girl whose dreams of becoming a dancer are complicated by the need to break away from her Midwestern family. Paula will be in conversation with Karen Parrish. \nMore than anything\, René wants to be a dancer. Eve\, her mother\, supports René despite the overwhelming financial burden and increasing tension her training places on the family. But one thing is clear: René’s dreams are never going to come true in Rapid City\, South Dakota\, circa 1973. \nSetting in motion a journey that will transform her from the inside out\, René is sent to train alongside stick-thin\, sculpted girls in Phoenix\, then on to Denver and beyond\, encountering along the way a dazzling sequence of eccentric and sometimes dangerous characters: creepy dads\, mean girls\, predatory radio announcers\, kindly ex-opera singers\, sham teachers\, and avaricious cult leaders. Through it all\, René pushes herself\, doing everything she can to excel at her art while at the same time finding her way through the trials of adolescence. \nBut leaving home is not the same as escaping it. And try as she might\, René can’t quite shake the aching she has for someone to love and accept her just the way she is\, dancer or not\, successful or not\, perfect or imperfect. \nLyrical and incisive\, Starting from Here is a story of facing the many challenges and terrors of girlhood\, of reaching for something that exceeds your grasp\, of the enduring contradictions of familial love\, of right steps and wrong turns\, and of somehow finding your way from wherever you are to wherever you need to go. \nThis event is free\, but please RSVP here as capacity is limited! Books will be on hand for sale and signing. \nMore about Upstart & Crow: \nUpstart & Crow is a not-for-profit creative studio and literary incubator that champions writers\, readers and stories\, and the role they play in shaping our lives. SUMMARY:‘women & roosters’: A Poetry Launch with Fenn Stewart
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening celebrating the launch of Fenn Stewart’s new work of poetry\, women and roosters\, published by the incredible indie press\, Book*hug. Stewart will be joined in reading by Laura Morales Padilla\, and Afuwa will moderate a question and answer period. \nTaking its title from ancient physician Galen’s claim that “all creatures are sad after sex except women and roosters\,” Stewart’s semi-autobiographical long poem winds its way through topics as far-reaching as climate change\, trail-running\, settler nationalism\, motherhood\, love\, loss and illness. The book revels and wallows in opposing forces. Cities\, forests and oceans are sites of abundance and abandonment. \nHumans\, birds\, deer\, crabs\, plants and trees thrive and multiply\, and also get sick and die. Living things eat and are eaten\, find joy and misery\, run\, fly\, and swim — and meet natural and unnatural ends. \nThis is a free event\, but please RSVP here\, as capacity is limited. Books will be on hand for sale and signing. \nMore about Upstart & Crow: \nUpstart & Crow is a not-for-profit creative studio and literary incubator that champions writers\, readers and stories\, and the role they play in shaping our lives.
