SUMMARY:Reconciling: A Night with Larry Grant and Scott Steedman
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special event with Elder Larry Grant and Scott Steedman to honour their new book\, Reconciling: A Lifelong Struggle to Belong. This will be a can’t-miss event for anyone interested in Vancouver history and environmentalism. \nIt’s taken most of Larry’s long life for his extraordinary heritage to be appreciated. He was born in a hop field outside Vancouver in 1936\, the son of a Musqueam cultural leader and an immigrant from a village in Guangdong\, China. In 1940\, when the Indian agent discovered that their mother had married a non-status man\, Larry and his two siblings were stripped of their status. With one stroke of the pen\, they were disenfranchised—no longer recognized as Indigenous. \nReconciling is a series of conversations between Larry and writer Scott Steedman as they visit pivotal geographical places together\, including the Musqueam reserve\, Chinatown\, the site of the Mission residential school\, the Vancouver docks and the University of British Columbia. Larry tells the story of his life\, including his thoughts on reconciliation and the path forward for First Nations and Canada. His life echoes the barely known story of Vancouver and spans key events of the last two centuries\, including Chinese immigration and the Head Tax\, the ravages of residential school and now Indigenous revival and the accompanying change in worldview. \nThis is a free event\, but please RSVP here for your spot as capacity is limited. Books will be on hand for sale and signing. Thank you to publisher ECW Press for partnering on this event. \nMore about Upstart & Crow: \nUpstart & Crow is a not-for-profit creative studio and literary incubator that champions writers\, readers and stories\, and the role they play in shaping our lives. We develop original programs\, support artists and revel in creative projects focused on Literature In Translation\, Climate Solutions\, Poetry\, Civic Dialogue\, Community & Skills Building\, all with the aim of elevating the role of literature and storytelling in our lives. Find us on Granville Island\, Gibsons and online at upstartandcrow.com. \nAccessibility: \nThe main studio of our shop is accessible for folks with mobility aids. There is a washroom on the main floor available for attendees. \nQuestions: hello[at]upstartandcrow.com.

SUMMARY:Make Sneaky Art: A Drawing Workshop with Nishant Jain
DESCRIPTION:How would your life change if\, whenever you had a free moment\, you could reach for a sketchbook instead of your phone? \nJoin us on Saturday\, January 24 at 6pm for a special “sneaky sketching” workshop with philosopher\, scientist\, engineer\, writer — and now artist — Nishant Jain. \nAfter moving to the U.S.\, Nishant began carrying a sketchbook as a way to make sense of a new place and a new life. Hesitant to do “the silly thing” in public\, he developed a practice he calls “sneaky art”: quick\, discreet sketches made in spare moments — on transit\, in cafés\, between errands. Over time\, the habit became a way of paying closer attention to the world. \nWe’re welcoming Nishant to our studio for a special hands-on workshop inspired by ideas and techniques from his recent book\, Make (Sneaky) Art. Through quick-drawing exercises\, participants will learn to close the hesitation gap and make lines with confidence. You’ll practice how to sketch without overthinking\, and discover how even a few minutes can be enough to make art. \nThis workshop is perfect for both experienced artists and those just starting out. No prior artistic experience is needed! \nTo ensure event attendance and to help us cover costs\, this event is $10. Please RSVP here to reserve your spot. If you are experiencing barriers to attend\, please reach out over email. We’re happy to provide you with one of our scholarship spots. \nMore about Upstart & Crow: \nUpstart & Crow is a not-for-profit creative studio and literary incubator that champions writers\, readers and stories\, and the role they play in shaping our lives. SUMMARY:Translation Spotlight: Ukraine\, Looking at History
DESCRIPTION:Step out of the winter chill and into an evening of Ukrainian food\, drink\, and extraordinary translated literature. \nOn Friday\, January 9 at 6:30 p.m.\, join us for a special edition of our Translation Spotlight series — Ukraine — presented in partnership with Maple Hope Foundation. \nNot a typical literary talk\, you’ll be gathered around our long table for a chance to taste traditional Ukrainian food and drink\, participate in discussion\, and learn about writers who carry both ancestral history and the immediacy of invasion into their work. \nGuided by Svitlana Matviyenko (Associate Professor of Critical Media Analysis at SFU) and Alina Senchenko (Ukrainian Canadian artist and curator)\, we’ll explore remarkable works of translated prose and poetry that trace the twisted routes of intimate and collective histories\, asking how some events persist in memory while others are erased\, obscured\, or slip through the cracks of remembrance. All of these works bear witness to Russia’s ongoing invasion\, and open a human-centred dialogue on how literature can help carry impossible stories. \nYou’ll leave with a specially curated reading list of Ukrainian writers to explore\, and selected books will be available for purchase. \nThis event will also include a poetry reading by Elizabeth Bachinsky. \nOur Translation Spotlight events are intimate and open to a limited amount of participants. To support our non-profit programming and to help us cover costs\, this event is $30. Spots go quickly\, so please RSVP here. \nMore about Maple Hope Foundation: Maple Hope Foundation emerged from the global Ukrainian volunteer movement in 2014\, which began in response to the Euromaidan in Kyiv. Their founding members first connected during the solidarity marches held in Vancouver nine years ago and their mission is to support displaced Ukrainians in Canada and Ukrainians on the ground in their response and resistance to Russia’s unprovoked invasion. \nMore about Upstart & Crow: \nUpstart & Crow is a not-for-profit creative studio and literary incubator that champions writers\, readers and stories\, and the role they play in shaping our lives. SUMMARY:In Translation Book Club: The Wax Child
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to Upstart & Crow’s In Translation Book Club\, a celebration of global literature and storytelling across languages and borders! This free\, bi-monthly event in our studio space introduces readers to powerful voices writing in languages other than English\, amplifying fresh perspectives\, underheard narratives and bold ideas. \nAfter a brief summer reprieve\, we’re back with a darker read to accompany you through spooky season — The Wax Child\, by Olga Ravn\, translated from Danish by Martin Aitken. \nFans of Robert Eggers\, rejoice: Olga Ravn’s brand new novel revisits an infamous seventeenth-century witch trial in Northern Jutland told through the strange\, all-seeing eyes of a wax doll who yearns for her lost maker. Dark and beautiful\, the story follows Christenze Kruckow and several women accused of witchcraft\, their lives punctuated by whispers of the Devil and the threat of the stake. Interwoven with original archival sources — letters\, spells\, and court records — Ravn reconstructs a fragile world where the true horror lies not in the supernatural\, but in the brutality of people influenced by suspicion\, gendered violence\, and the will to dominate. \nWe’ll be discussing it on Wednesday\, November 26 at 6:00pm. Bring yourself and an open mind to discuss the book! That’s all. \nYou do not need to have purchased the book from us to attend\, but we’ll be offering a 10% discount on the title if you do. You can do so by selecting between two ticket options. RSVP here. \nMore about Upstart & Crow: \nUpstart & Crow is a not-for-profit creative studio and literary incubator that champions writers\, readers and stories\, and the role they play in shaping our lives. SUMMARY:Poetry as Research Method: “don’t panic! and don’t write nature poems!”
DESCRIPTION:In this workshop\, we’ll consider poetry as a kind of research method that can help us think through crucial questions — in a time of climate crisis\, on stolen and unceded Indigenous lands: Where are we? How did we get here? What do we know\, and what do we still need to know\, about how to be here\, now? \nAs we are different people\, and different writers\, and as we have different relationships with the land\, and with ourselves\, we need different things. Our goal in this workshop\, then\, is to begin to develop poetry-research plans for ourselves\, in a mutually supportive and resource-sharing way. \nOur facilitator\, Fenn Stewart\, will share some of what she has learned from other writers and artists who are working through their own relationships with birds\, bears\, colonialism\, “Canada\,” other homelands\, other home nations\, other ancestors\, highways\, diasporas\, gardening\, zucchinis\, zebra mussels\, salmon\, lawns\, hiking trails\, and poetry itself. \nFenn will also share what she’s learned from Indigenous\, anti-racist\, and anti-colonial writers about some of the frames (like “settler apocalypticism\,” and certain kinds of “nature poetry”) that some of us get stuck in\, sometimes\, when we write about land\, and place\, and climate. \nPlease come prepared to read and think and write; speaking and sharing are warmly encouraged (but not required if unpleasant for you). \nTo support our non-profit programming and to help us cover costs\, this workshop is $10. RSVP here. If you are experiencing barriers to attend\, please reach out over email. We’re happy to provide you with one of our scholarship spots. We have reserved half of our available seats for attendees who are BIPOC/PGM. Anyone who self-identifies as Black\, Indigenous and/or a Person of Colour or People of the Global Majority is welcome to reserve these tickets. \nWhat to bring: \n\nA memory of the earliest plant\, bird\, or animal that you remember becoming acquainted with\, as well as (if applicable) a memory of the person or persons who introduced to you that being.\nA memory of the earliest time you ate straight out of a forest or garden or lake or river or ocean (berries\, mushrooms\, fish\, clams).\nYour earliest memory of a seeing\, or smelling\, or feeling a wildfire.\n\nMore about Upstart & Crow: \nUpstart & Crow is a not-for-profit creative studio and literary incubator that champions writers\, readers and stories\, and the role they play in shaping our lives. SUMMARY:Sounding Out: Exploring\, Creating & Performing Text Scores with Elee Kraljii Gardiner
DESCRIPTION:A text score is\, “a collection of verbally notated meditations that may be enjoyed by anyone in a variety of ways: read as poetry\, performed alone or performed for an audience.” Pauline Oliveros\, Sonic Meditations I – XXV (1971) \nJoin us on Friday\, November 21 at 6pm for a mini-intensive workshop with Vancouver Poet Laureate\, Elee Kraljii Gardiner. \nIn this playful two-hour workshop for anyone curious about words\, performance\, and sound\, we will experiment\, create some attempts\, and expand our artistic practice as we step out of the familiar into a space of curiosity. Our form is the text score\, a piece of writing that can be an instruction\, concept\, list\, poem\, diagram (or something else!). We’ll look at text scores from artists ranging from Fluxus to Futurist\, Yoko Ono and other composers and sound artists. Then we will create our own. \nAfter the workshop\, we’ll take a 30-minute break and reconvene at 8:30pm to perform the pieces in a gently supportive “world premiere” for friends\, family\, and the public. \nWe aim to support equitable engagement and welcome explorations of vibration\, movement\, and other ideas that expand our understanding of access while challenging audism and other barriers for the Deaf or hard of hearing. \nTo ensure event attendance and to help us cover costs\, this workshop is $10. RSVP here. If you are experiencing barriers to attend\, please reach out over email. We’re happy to provide you with one of our scholarship spots. \nNo previous writing or music experience is required! \nAbout Upstart & Crow: Upstart & Crow is a not-for-profit creative studio and literary incubator that champions writers\, readers and stories\, and the role they play in shaping our lives. SUMMARY:'Razing Palestine': Vancouver Launch
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Thursday\, November 20 at 6pm as we commemorate two years of escalating violence in Gaza\, and the histories of resilience through ongoing genocide. \nWhile many institutions have chosen silence\, countless people around the world — including here in Canada — have refused to look away. Those who spoke about the carnage were punished by censure\, sanction\, smearing and worse. Across the country\, journalists were muzzled\, academics were stifled\, doctors were fired\, activists were arrested\, and artists were banned. \nRazing Palestine: Punishing Solidarity and Dissent in Canada\, edited by Leila Marshy\, gathers testimonies from these journalists\, healthcare workers\, academics\, artists\, and activists who have suffered the cost of solidarity. Their stories affirm the importance of collective resistance against colonial violence and how we might ensure that the call for a free Palestine continues to be heard. \nThis event is free\, but please RSVP here to reserve your spot. \nAbout Upstart & Crow: Upstart & Crow is a not-for-profit creative studio and literary incubator that champions writers\, readers and stories\, and the role they play in shaping our lives. SUMMARY:Tamil Terrains: Poems\, Translations\, Reflections with Trace Press

SUMMARY:Writer’s Block: An Evening of Climate Writing
DESCRIPTION:Struggling to commit to your journal? Hitting a rough patch in your thesis? Feel like your op-ed is swirling the drain? As a great storyteller once said; “My world’s on fire – how about yours?” \nJoin local environmental group the sword fern collective for an evening of focused writing and community connection. \nIn these infamously unprecedented times\, climate journalists\, storytellers and artists are all battling burnout. Part-industry gathering and part-coworking session\, this event is for all of the writers out there — whether working in climate-related fields or otherwise — who need a little relief from the noise and from their typical routines. \nSword fern collective is cultivating a cozy living-room vibe at Upstart and Crow\, complete with charcuterie\, beverages\, chill music and an optional ‘phone jail’ for those craving some no-screen time. Attendees will have a short window to connect with each other\, and then we’ll settle into 45 minutes of focused\, intentional writing time. There’s no pressure to produce\, only to participate\, and you won’t be asked to share what they’ve written (unless you really want to). \nThere is limited seating\, so please RSVP here. \nI’m not a journalist or a grad student. Can I come? \nYes! We define a climate writer as anyone who writes things that interface with the climate. This includes poetry\, journal entries\, short stories\, articles\, essays\, or letters to your representative. We welcome all mediums and experience levels. \nWhat food are you serving? \nWe’ll be serving a vegetarian charcuterie board. There will be gluten\, dairy\, and nut-free options available\, but please note we cannot protect against cross contamination. There will also be non-alcoholic beverages available. \nAbout Upstart & Crow: Upstart & Crow is a not-for-profit creative studio and literary incubator that champions writers\, readers and stories\, and the role they play in shaping our lives. SUMMARY:‘Starting from Here’: Book Launch
DESCRIPTION:Join us in celebrating the launch of Paula Saunders’s new novel\, Starting from Here\, a coming-of-age tale about a young girl whose dreams of becoming a dancer are complicated by the need to break away from her Midwestern family. Paula will be in conversation with Karen Parrish. \nMore than anything\, René wants to be a dancer. Eve\, her mother\, supports René despite the overwhelming financial burden and increasing tension her training places on the family. But one thing is clear: René’s dreams are never going to come true in Rapid City\, South Dakota\, circa 1973. \nSetting in motion a journey that will transform her from the inside out\, René is sent to train alongside stick-thin\, sculpted girls in Phoenix\, then on to Denver and beyond\, encountering along the way a dazzling sequence of eccentric and sometimes dangerous characters: creepy dads\, mean girls\, predatory radio announcers\, kindly ex-opera singers\, sham teachers\, and avaricious cult leaders. Through it all\, René pushes herself\, doing everything she can to excel at her art while at the same time finding her way through the trials of adolescence. \nBut leaving home is not the same as escaping it. And try as she might\, René can’t quite shake the aching she has for someone to love and accept her just the way she is\, dancer or not\, successful or not\, perfect or imperfect. \nLyrical and incisive\, Starting from Here is a story of facing the many challenges and terrors of girlhood\, of reaching for something that exceeds your grasp\, of the enduring contradictions of familial love\, of right steps and wrong turns\, and of somehow finding your way from wherever you are to wherever you need to go. \nThis event is free\, but please RSVP here as capacity is limited! Books will be on hand for sale and signing. \nMore about Upstart & Crow: \nUpstart & Crow is a not-for-profit creative studio and literary incubator that champions writers\, readers and stories\, and the role they play in shaping our lives. SUMMARY:‘women & roosters’: A Poetry Launch with Fenn Stewart
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening celebrating the launch of Fenn Stewart’s new work of poetry\, women and roosters\, published by the incredible indie press\, Book*hug. Stewart will be joined in reading by Laura Morales Padilla\, and Afuwa will moderate a question and answer period. \nTaking its title from ancient physician Galen’s claim that “all creatures are sad after sex except women and roosters\,” Stewart’s semi-autobiographical long poem winds its way through topics as far-reaching as climate change\, trail-running\, settler nationalism\, motherhood\, love\, loss and illness. The book revels and wallows in opposing forces. Cities\, forests and oceans are sites of abundance and abandonment. \nHumans\, birds\, deer\, crabs\, plants and trees thrive and multiply\, and also get sick and die. Living things eat and are eaten\, find joy and misery\, run\, fly\, and swim — and meet natural and unnatural ends. \nThis is a free event\, but please RSVP here\, as capacity is limited. Books will be on hand for sale and signing. \nMore about Upstart & Crow: \nUpstart & Crow is a not-for-profit creative studio and literary incubator that champions writers\, readers and stories\, and the role they play in shaping our lives. SUMMARY:Mandylion Press: Delve into the Hair-Raising World of Victorian Science and the Occult
DESCRIPTION:On the eve of Halloween\, discover Mandylion Press: a daring new publishing house dedicated to unearthing lost literary gems written by women and weirdos in the (very) long nineteenth century. \nFrom the shelf of the theologian to that of the medical man\, the nineteenth century was alive with speculation\, experimentation\, and eerie inquiry into the mysteries of body and soul. What do we owe to the places that we inhabit? \nJoin us online on Sunday\, October 26 at 9:30am to celebrate Alice Mah’s new book\, Red Pockets\, shortlisted for the 2025 Wainwright Prize for Conservation Writing. \nRed Pockets is a moving meditation on ancestry\, belonging\, and the intertwined fates of people and planet. SUMMARY:Hidden Flowers: A Book Launch with Keiko Honda
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special evening celebrating the new memoir Hidden Flowers by the remarkable Keiko Honda\, scientist and a Vancouver champion of the arts. It investigates the forces of attachment\, belonging\, cultural expectations\, and the intricate dance between tradition and modernity. It reminds us of the power of art and its ability to bring people together\, especially in an era when isolation is epidemic. \nIllustrated throughout with Honda’s watercolour paintings\, Hidden Flowers is an inspiring journey that will bolster the spirits of anyone who is experiencing a difficult transition in life or looking for a creative outlet. \nThis event is free\, but space is limited. Please RSVP here to reserve your spot. SUMMARY:‘Bloom’: A Book Launch Celebrating Letters on Girlhood
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the Vancouver launch of Bloom: Letters on Girlhood\, a timely new memoir exploring how societal expectations shape identity\, and how we can continue\, at any age\, to release the past. This is a free event\, but please RSVP for your spot here\, as capacity is limited. Books will be on hand for sale and signing! \nA raw\, searching and intimate memoir\, Bloom: Letters on Girlhood is a conversation between two acclaimed writers about silence and shame and what it means to come of age as young women. Over 2.5 years\, authors Claire Sicherman (Imprint: A Memoir of Trauma in the Third Generation) and Nicole Breit\, an award-winning poet and essayist\, exchanged letters chronicling their coming-of-age in the suburbs of late 1980s Vancouver. \nBloom: Letters on Girlhood is a candid memoir-in-letters in which Claire and Nicole explore the awkwardness and confusion of adolescence\, delving into everything from periods\, first bras and body hair to desire\, sexuality and consent. As they reflect on their silent struggles as girls\, women and mothers from the perspective of mid-life\, the true impact of patriarchy and misogyny on their lives becomes increasingly apparent. \nMore about Upstart & Crow: \nUpstart & Crow is a not-for-profit creative studio and literary incubator that champions writers\, readers and stories\, and the role they play in shaping our lives. SUMMARY:Race to the Cape: Book Launch with Theresa O’Leary
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening celebrating the launch of Race to the Cape\, the debut book by journalist Theresa M. O’Leary\, which shares the thrilling history behind one of the most trusted names in news: the Associated Press. O’Leary will be joined in conversation by the CBC’s Laura Lynch. \nNearly two centuries ago\, a quiet revolution began: a pursuit of the truth that would fundamentally change how the world gets its news. In Race to the Cape: The Daring News Chase\, the Birth of the Associated Press\, and the Journalist at the Heart of It All\, O’Leary transports the reader to a time when speed\, accuracy and objectivity became paramount\, revealing the incredible true story behind a byline we still trust today. \nSet against the backdrop of the media industry of the 1800s\, O’Leary chronicles the remarkable life of Daniel H. Craig\, an intrepid newspaperman who helped shape the very foundations of news reporting. Craig’s journey intertwines with the telegraph\, marking the birth of a new era of news that would reach across continents. It also chronicles the story of the role Canada’s Cape Race played in the birth of the Associated Press\, the trusted cornerstone of modern journalism. \nThis compelling book explores the rivalry\, collaboration\, and ingenuity that led to the formation of the New York Associated Press in 1846\, and how Craig and his team worked tirelessly to bring accurate\, timely\, and objective news to the world — a mission that still defines the AP today. Through dramatic accounts of race-against-time news retrieval\, high-seas adventures\, and the relentless pursuit of the scoop\, Race to the Cape offers a behind-the-scenes look at the creation of the Associated Press and the role Canada’s Cape Race played in it all. \nThis event is free\, but please RSVP here to save your spot. Books will be available for sale and signing. \nMore about Upstart & Crow: \nUpstart & Crow is a not-for-profit creative studio and literary incubator that champions writers\, readers and stories\, and the role they play in shaping our lives. DESCRIPTION:Join us on Wednesday\, Oct. 15 to celebrate the launch of local writer Michael Bourne’s captivating new small-town mystery\, We Bring You an Hour of Darkness. Bourne will be in conversation with actor and writer Jerry Wasserman. \nInspired in part by a real-life 1998 arson at the Vail ski resort and with echoes of more recent events\, this propulsive ski-town thriller probes the morality of activism that aims to save the planet but risks human lives. A gripping story of a town under siege and a newspaper editor who pushes her reporters to the grey areas of the law in order to solve the riddle of the attacks\, Bourne’s novel features a witch’s brew of charismatic\, independently-minded characters\, some radicals\, and the small-town dysfunction that often defines local politics. \nThis event is free but space is limited. RSVP here to save your spot. Books will be available for purchase and signing. \nMore about Upstart & Crow: \nUpstart & Crow is a not-for-profit creative studio and literary incubator that champions writers\, readers and stories\, and the role they play in shaping our lives. Michelle Cyca is a freelance journalist and avid library patron. Megan Lau is your resident nonfiction aficionado and culture nerd. \nAbout the wines: \n\nBlack Sage GSM 2022: A blend of Grenache\, Syrah\, and Mourvèdre\, aged in barrel for 16 months before being masterfully blended. Aromas of red cherries\, ripe strawberries\, with an undertone of sweet toastiness and baking spices. The fruit carries on the palate with a delicate balance of acidity and earthiness. The finish persists with pleasant fruit flavours and a hint of toasted spices.\nNk’Mip Pinot Blanc 2024: In 2024\, a severe frost swept through the Okanagan Valley\, dramatically reducing the local harvest. In response\, Nk’Mip Cellars turned to Washington State\, a region rich in both quality and meaning\, and part of the traditional territory once travelled by the Syilx people. The vintage may bring subtle differences\, but its spirit remains rooted in connection\, resilience\, and respect for the land both near and far. This Pinot Blanc opens with delicate floral aromatics and bright notes of citrus and green apple. On the palate\, it delivers a crisp entry layered with flavours of Granny Smith apple\, lemon zest\, and subtle mineral undertones.\nSee Ya Later Ranch Luna 2024: Luna is a vibrant blend of aromatic white varieties\, each harvested at peak freshness. Fermented separately in stainless steel\, the components were thoughtfully blended to create a lively\, fruit-forward wine with a balanced touch of sweetness and bright acidity. Delicate aromas of green apple\, ripe peace\, and subtle floral notes rise from the glass\, inviting you in. On the palate\, it’s bright and refreshing\, with juicy fruit flavours that call to mind sun-soaked afternoons and easygoing vibes.\nSaintly Sparkling Rose 2024: Harvested at just the right moment for sparkling perfection\, this rosé was cool fermented in stainless steel to lock in freshness and vibrant character. A secondary fermentation adds that signature lively mousse. On the nose\, it’s bursting with strawberry\, raspberry\, peach\, and a splash of lime. The palate? Crisp\, dry\, and textural\, with juicy fruit\, subtle florals\, and a finish that lingers just long enough to tempt another sip.\n\nMore about Upstart & Crow: \nLocated on Granville Island\, Upstart & Crow is a literary arts studio for curious readers and creative storytellers alike. SUMMARY:‘Slice the Water’: A Book Launch with PP Wong
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening to celebrate the launch of PP Wong’s second novel\, Slice the Water\, a magical new work called “a knockout\,” by novelist Annabel Lyon and one of 49th Shelf’s Most Anticipated Fall Fiction. Wong will be in conversation with tech journalist Lisa Tanh to explore themes in her novel\, including how social media and AI not only reshapes our world but redefines what it means to be human. \nBorn on the lush island nation of Mahana\, Fred lives under the tyrannical rule of a book-burning king. Under the king’s rule\, Mahanians are controlled by a military dictatorship and threatened with forced starvation\, while people with disabilities are exiled. After Fred’s father suddenly disappears\, Fred joins an underground movement of dissenters and becomes an unwitting global icon in the fight for Mahanian freedom. When he is recruited and relocated by an organization that appears sympathetic to Fred’s cause\, he arrives in a seemingly peaceful foreign nation\, where the impact of social media and technology creates a new\, stranger struggle. \nA dystopian thriller\, a speculative fiction\, and a coming-of-age story\, Wong’s novel thrums with biting bursts of staccato-like prose — a fitting accompaniment to a fascinating exploration of contrasting political systems. As Fred unpeels layers of truth and sees beyond the optics of altruism and the illusion of choice\, Slice the Water unpacks the myriad amplifying impacts of technology\, addiction\, and complacency. Watch the book trailer here. \nLimited tickets are $10\, purchased here\, and can be credited toward the purchase of your signed copy of the novel. Books will be on hand for sale and signing! \nMore about Upstart & Crow: \nUpstart & Crow is a not-for-profit creative studio and literary incubator that champions writers\, readers and stories\, and the role they play in shaping our lives.
