SUMMARY:Race to the Cape: Book Launch with Theresa O’Leary
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening celebrating the launch of Race to the Cape\, the debut book by journalist Theresa M. O’Leary\, which shares the thrilling history behind one of the most trusted names in news: the Associated Press. O’Leary will be joined in conversation by the CBC’s Laura Lynch. \nNearly two centuries ago\, a quiet revolution began: a pursuit of the truth that would fundamentally change how the world gets its news. In Race to the Cape: The Daring News Chase\, the Birth of the Associated Press\, and the Journalist at the Heart of It All\, O’Leary transports the reader to a time when speed\, accuracy and objectivity became paramount\, revealing the incredible true story behind a byline we still trust today. \nSet against the backdrop of the media industry of the 1800s\, O’Leary chronicles the remarkable life of Daniel H. Craig\, an intrepid newspaperman who helped shape the very foundations of news reporting. Craig’s journey intertwines with the telegraph\, marking the birth of a new era of news that would reach across continents. It also chronicles the story of the role Canada’s Cape Race played in the birth of the Associated Press\, the trusted cornerstone of modern journalism. \nThis compelling book explores the rivalry\, collaboration\, and ingenuity that led to the formation of the New York Associated Press in 1846\, and how Craig and his team worked tirelessly to bring accurate\, timely\, and objective news to the world — a mission that still defines the AP today. Through dramatic accounts of race-against-time news retrieval\, high-seas adventures\, and the relentless pursuit of the scoop\, Race to the Cape offers a behind-the-scenes look at the creation of the Associated Press and the role Canada’s Cape Race played in it all. \nThis event is free\, but please RSVP here to save your spot. Books will be available for sale and signing. \nMore about Upstart & Crow: \nUpstart & Crow is a not-for-profit creative studio and literary incubator that champions writers\, readers and stories\, and the role they play in shaping our lives. We develop original programs\, support artists and revel in creative projects focused on literature in translation\, climate solutions\, poetry\, civic dialogue\, community and skills building\, all with the aim of elevating the role of literature and storytelling in our lives. SUMMARY:‘We Bring You an Hour of Darkness’: Book Launch
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Wednesday\, Oct. 15 to celebrate the launch of local writer Michael Bourne’s captivating new small-town mystery\, We Bring You an Hour of Darkness. Bourne will be in conversation with actor and writer Jerry Wasserman. \nInspired in part by a real-life 1998 arson at the Vail ski resort and with echoes of more recent events\, this propulsive ski-town thriller probes the morality of activism that aims to save the planet but risks human lives. A gripping story of a town under siege and a newspaper editor who pushes her reporters to the grey areas of the law in order to solve the riddle of the attacks\, Bourne’s novel features a witch’s brew of charismatic\, independently-minded characters\, some radicals\, and the small-town dysfunction that often defines local politics. \nThis event is free but space is limited. RSVP here to save your spot. Books will be available for purchase and signing. \nMore about Upstart & Crow: \nUpstart & Crow is a not-for-profit creative studio and literary incubator that champions writers\, readers and stories\, and the role they play in shaping our lives. SUMMARY:Lit and Libations: An Evening at Upstart & Crow
DESCRIPTION:Come to Upstart & Crow on Friday\, Sept. 19 to enjoy the sweet and sultry final days of summer with a evening celebrating beautiful B.C. wines and books. Because this place makes exquisite stuff! \nJoin us for a glass and a hobnob with your fellow readers in our romantic “literary living room.” We’ll be sharing a literary menu that includes our newest favourites from local writers and pairing our picks with the lush wines of Black Sage Vineyard\, Nk’Mip Cellars\, See Ya Later Ranch and Saintly Wines. \nOur book sommeliers are available for tailored recommendations and literary matchmaking. We’re holding two 90-minutes “seatings”\, one starting at 6 p.m. and one at 8 p.m. Tickets are $40 (or buy two for $70). Each ticket includes: \n\nA hearty glass of truly excellent B.C. wine: white\, red and sparkling options\nA $25 gift certificate towards Upstart & Crow purchases\nFun extras like tailored menus with book recommendations\n\nMeet your book sommeliers: \nRobyn Smith is the creative and operations director of Upstart & Crow. Michelle Cyca is a freelance journalist and avid library patron. Megan Lau is your resident nonfiction aficionado and culture nerd. \nAbout the wines: \n\nBlack Sage GSM 2022: A blend of Grenache\, Syrah\, and Mourvèdre\, aged in barrel for 16 months before being masterfully blended. Aromas of red cherries\, ripe strawberries\, with an undertone of sweet toastiness and baking spices. The fruit carries on the palate with a delicate balance of acidity and earthiness. The finish persists with pleasant fruit flavours and a hint of toasted spices.\nNk’Mip Pinot Blanc 2024: In 2024\, a severe frost swept through the Okanagan Valley\, dramatically reducing the local harvest. In response\, Nk’Mip Cellars turned to Washington State\, a region rich in both quality and meaning\, and part of the traditional territory once travelled by the Syilx people. The vintage may bring subtle differences\, but its spirit remains rooted in connection\, resilience\, and respect for the land both near and far. This Pinot Blanc opens with delicate floral aromatics and bright notes of citrus and green apple. On the palate\, it delivers a crisp entry layered with flavours of Granny Smith apple\, lemon zest\, and subtle mineral undertones.\nSee Ya Later Ranch Luna 2024: Luna is a vibrant blend of aromatic white varieties\, each harvested at peak freshness. Fermented separately in stainless steel\, the components were thoughtfully blended to create a lively\, fruit-forward wine with a balanced touch of sweetness and bright acidity. Delicate aromas of green apple\, ripe peace\, and subtle floral notes rise from the glass\, inviting you in. On the palate\, it’s bright and refreshing\, with juicy fruit flavours that call to mind sun-soaked afternoons and easygoing vibes.\nSaintly Sparkling Rose 2024: Harvested at just the right moment for sparkling perfection\, this rosé was cool fermented in stainless steel to lock in freshness and vibrant character. A secondary fermentation adds that signature lively mousse. On the nose\, it’s bursting with strawberry\, raspberry\, peach\, and a splash of lime. The palate? Crisp\, dry\, and textural\, with juicy fruit\, subtle florals\, and a finish that lingers just long enough to tempt another sip.\n\nMore about Upstart & Crow: \nLocated on Granville Island\, Upstart & Crow is a literary arts studio for curious readers and creative storytellers alike. SUMMARY:‘Slice the Water’: A Book Launch with PP Wong
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening to celebrate the launch of PP Wong’s second novel\, Slice the Water\, a magical new work called “a knockout\,” by novelist Annabel Lyon and one of 49th Shelf’s Most Anticipated Fall Fiction. Wong will be in conversation with tech journalist Lisa Tanh to explore themes in her novel\, including how social media and AI not only reshapes our world but redefines what it means to be human. \nBorn on the lush island nation of Mahana\, Fred lives under the tyrannical rule of a book-burning king. Under the king’s rule\, Mahanians are controlled by a military dictatorship and threatened with forced starvation\, while people with disabilities are exiled. After Fred’s father suddenly disappears\, Fred joins an underground movement of dissenters and becomes an unwitting global icon in the fight for Mahanian freedom. When he is recruited and relocated by an organization that appears sympathetic to Fred’s cause\, he arrives in a seemingly peaceful foreign nation\, where the impact of social media and technology creates a new\, stranger struggle. \nA dystopian thriller\, a speculative fiction\, and a coming-of-age story\, Wong’s novel thrums with biting bursts of staccato-like prose — a fitting accompaniment to a fascinating exploration of contrasting political systems. As Fred unpeels layers of truth and sees beyond the optics of altruism and the illusion of choice\, Slice the Water unpacks the myriad amplifying impacts of technology\, addiction\, and complacency. Watch the book trailer here. \nLimited tickets are $10\, purchased here\, and can be credited toward the purchase of your signed copy of the novel. Books will be on hand for sale and signing! \nMore about Upstart & Crow: \nUpstart & Crow is a not-for-profit creative studio and literary incubator that champions writers\, readers and stories\, and the role they play in shaping our lives. SUMMARY:Encrypted: A Reading with Arleen Paré
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Wednesday\, Sept. 17 at 6:30 p.m. for an evening reading with award-winning poet Arleen Paré to celebrate her new collection\, Encrypted. \nEncrypted is a tribute to family and youth in a time of complex anxiety and loneliness. In September 2020\, Arleen’s almost 20-year old grandson moved into the basement of her home to attend courses nearby. After suffering a bout of severe anxiety and depression\, he was forced to drop out of his second-year computer science program after one month. In an effort to quell her own feelings of helplessness and growing anxiety about the situation\, Paré turned to poetry. \nBoth a tender tribute to a beloved grandson and an elegy for coming of age in our modern\, online society\, Encrypted is an honest and illuminating narrative of a life arrested and a home haunted by grief. Arleen will be joined in conversation by Raoul Fernandes. \nThis event is free\, but please RSVP here to reserve your spot. \nMore about Upstart & Crow: \nUpstart & Crow is a not-for-profit creative studio and literary incubator that champions writers\, readers and stories\, and the role they play in shaping our lives. SUMMARY:Free Gifts: Capitalism and the Politics of Nature
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Thursday\, September 11 at 6:30pm for an author talk with writer and political scientist Alyssa Battistoni in celebration of her new book\, Free Gifts: Capitalism and the Politics of Nature. \nCapitalism is typically treated as a force for relentless commodification. Yet it fails to place value on vital aspects of the nonhuman world\, whether carbon emissions or entire ecosystems. In Free Gifts\, Alyssa Battistoni tackles this paradox head-on. \nTo understand contemporary ecological problems from biodiversity collapse to climate change\, she contends that we must first understand how some things come to have value under capitalism\, and how others do not. To help us do so\, Battistoni recovers and reinterprets the idea of ‘the free gift of nature’ used by classical economic thinkers to describe what we gratuitously obtain from the natural world. She builds on Karl Marx’s critique of political economy to show how capitalism fundamentally treats nature as free for the taking. \nAlong the way\, she offers fresh insights into influential thinkers like Simone de Beauvoir\, Friedrich Hayek\, Garrett Hardin\, Silvia Federici\, and Ronald Coase. Battistoni shows how understanding capitalism’s blind spots helps explain our current ecological crises\, and how we might build a world that truly values nature’s gifts. \nBattistoni will be in conversation with Geoff Mann\, Professor at Simon Fraser University and Senior Fellow at the Institute for New Economic Thinking. \nThis event is free\, but please RSVP here as spots are limited.  \nMore about Upstart & Crow: \nUpstart & Crow is a not-for-profit creative studio and literary incubator that champions writers\, readers and stories\, and the role they play in shaping our lives. SUMMARY:'A Precarious Enterprise': An Evening with Publishing Legend Scott McIntyre
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening celebrating a cornerstone of Canadian publishing history with the launch of A Precarious Enterprise: Making a Life in Canadian Publishing by Scott McIntyre. \nMcIntyre has lived\, and shaped\, the story of Canadian literature. From his early days at McClelland & Stewart to cofounding Douglas & McIntyre in 1970\, his career spans the most exhilarating decades in the country’s literary coming-of-age. In this new memoir\, McIntyre offers a vibrant\, personal account of building one of Canada’s most respected publishing houses—one that championed Indigenous voices\, children’s literature\, and a generation of authors who helped define our national identity. \nA Precarious Enterprise is not just the story of one publisher and his company\, but a deeply human look at the people\, philosophies\, and passions that animated a golden era of Canadian publishing. With anecdotes featuring iconic writers like Farley Mowat\, Wayson Choy\, Wade Davis\, Anna Porter\, and many more\, this is a must-read (and must-hear!) for anyone curious about the past\, present\, and future of books in this country. \nThis event is free but space is limited. SUMMARY:Praise and the Practice of Naming: A Generative Writing Workshop for a Complex World
DESCRIPTION:In this 90-minute online session\, Preeti Kaur Dhaliwal—our 2025 resident poet—will guide you through an exploration of praise poems as a radical\, expansive form—not just for gratitude and joy\, but for holding the contradictions of being alive. Together\, we’ll explore how praise can be a practice of witnessing the full complexity of our lives: the beauty and the grief\, the ordinary and the sacred\, the resilience and the rupture. We’ll read work by Black and Indigenous poets whose writing expands the notion of praise and deepens our relationship to language\, land\, memory\, and community. You’ll be invited to engage with the world on the page—not just the easy things\, but the hard\, the overlooked\, the still-transforming. \nWith the support of generative prompts\, writing techniques\, and grounding exercises\, you’ll be invited to write from your own voice\, body\, and experience. There will be opportunities to share your words\, but no obligation. Whether you’re here to meet the page with tenderness\, curiosity\, reverence\, or uncertainty\, there’s space for you. All are welcome. \nPreeti centers choice\, community care\, and the belief that stories can shift how we see and hold ourselves\, one another\, and the world. No writing experience is required—just bring your curiosity\, your honesty\, and something to write with. \nTo ensure event attendance\, this workshop is $5. If you are experiencing barriers to attend\, please reach out over email. We’re happy to provide you with one of our scholarship spots. \nSpots go quickly\, so please reserve your place here! \nAdditional information: \nIf you can’t make it to this workshop\, you can find Preeti’s online drop-in writing sessions here. To find out more about Indian Summer Festival\, or to register for one of their upcoming events\, click here. \nAbout Upstart & Crow: \nLocated on Granville Island\, Upstart & Crow is a not-for-profit literary arts studio for curious readers and creative storytellers alike. DESCRIPTION:Join Chelene Knight\, award-winning author and founder of Breathing Space Creative Studio\, for a transformative in-person workshop that could change the way you live and write. \nFor one special evening\, Chelene brings her renowned Say No With Love Workshop to our studio. This offering is for writers who want to set nourishing boundaries\, protect their creative energy\, and shape a writing life they want to return to — again and again. No two creative lives look the same\, and this workshop invites you to look closely at your life\, your season\, and your needs. \nThrough reflective writing\, discussion\, and the 7-step Say No With Love process\, we’ll gently surface limiting beliefs (like “I don’t have time to write” or “I can’t give time to things that don’t pay me”) and explore how they shape your day-to-day choices. You’ll leave with your own Say No With Love Map — a simple\, personalized tool that acts as a filter for decisions\, helps you prioritize with clarity\, and guides how you want to show up in both your writing life and beyond. Whether you are a brand new writer or a seasoned one\, the only prerequisites are an open mind and a desire to create more space for creativity. \nTo support our non-profit programming and to help us cover costs\, this workshop is $10. If you are experiencing barriers to attend\, please reach out over email — we are happy to provide you with one of our reserved free-by-donation tickets. We have very limited seating and spots go quickly\, so please reserve your place here! \nMore about Upstart & Crow: \nUpstart & Crow is a not-for-profit creative studio and literary incubator that champions writers\, readers and stories\, and the role they play in shaping our lives. We develop original programs\, support artists and revel in creative projects focused on Literature In Translation / Climate Solutions / Poetry / Civic Dialogue / Community & Skills Building … all with the aim of elevating the role of literature and storytelling in our lives. SUMMARY:The Way Around: A Q&A with Nicholas Triolo
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Tuesday\, July 15 at 7pm for an intimate Q&A with writer\, editor\, and athlete Nicholas Triolo\, whose new book The Way Around has been hailed as a “beautiful\, intricate rebuke to our obsession with linearity and outcome” (Robert MacFarlane). \nRaised in a family of elite athletes—and in a culture obsessed with goals\, grit\, and linear achievement—Nicholas Triolo set out on a solo circumnavigation of the globe\, seeking something beyond the finish line. In Kathmandu\, he encountered kora\, a form of moving prayer in which pilgrims walk in circles around sacred sites or objects. Captivated\, Triolo undertook three transformative walks of his own: around Tibet’s sacred Mount Kailash\, through the poet-haunted trails of Mount Tamalpais\, and\, finally\, encircling Montana’s Berkeley Pit Complex\, the largest Superfund site in the United States. The Way Around is a record of these journeys\, a transcendent meditation on movement\, meaning\, and the entanglement between inner and outer landscapes. \nThis is a chance to hear from a truly singular voice—brilliant\, grounded\, rising fast—and to ask your own questions about writing\, wandering\, and what it means to ‘go nowhere’ in a world obsessed with achievement. \nDon’t miss this opportunity to spend an evening with a writer whose path is anything but ordinary! \nTickets are free but please RSVP here as spots are limited. We’ll have books on hand for purchase and signing. \nMore about Upstart & Crow: \nUpstart & Crow is a not-for-profit creative studio and literary incubator that champions writers\, readers and stories\, and the role they play in shaping our lives. SUMMARY:Listen to the Land Speak: Manchán Magan Live
DESCRIPTION:What if the land speaks\, but we’ve simply forgotten how to listen?  \nJoin us for an unforgettable evening with one of Ireland’s most visionary voices. On Wednesday\, July 9 at 6:30 p.m.\, Irish writer and documentarian Manchán Magan invites us to tune in again to the forgotten frequencies of the natural world in a special live event. His return to Vancouver follows multiple sold-out shows that combine a deep reverence for language\, land — and gloriously original thinking.  \nDrawing on ancient Irish myth\, the musicality of the old Irish language\, and the goddess-rooted wisdom embedded in stones\, rivers\, and wells\, Manchán leads us on a journey of reconnection with the lost knowledge of the more-than-human world. At a time when both ecological and cultural systems feel increasingly fragile\, Manchán beckons us to rewild not only the Earth\, but the landscapes of our own imaginations. \nThis event has limited seating\, which will fill up fast! Please RSVP here to secure your spot. \nAbout Upstart & Crow: \nLocated on Granville Island\, Upstart & Crow is a not-for-profit literary arts studio for curious readers and creative storytellers alike. SUMMARY:Writing Toward Borderless Solidarities: A Workshop with Poet in Residence\, Preeti Kaur Dhaliwal
DESCRIPTION:Presented in collaboration with Indian Summer Festival\, this generative workshop with Preeti Kaur Dhaliwal\, Upstart & Crow’s 2025 Poet in Residence\, invites participants to explore the theme of borderless solidarities through creative writing\, connection\, and shared reflection. \nWe’ll begin with a series of freewriting exercises that invite you to explore the idea of borders — between people\, places\, identities\, and within ourselves. Through grounding prompts\, sensory details\, and gentle strategies to quiet the inner critic\, we’ll experiment with different ways to find your flow and create space for language to move through us with more ease. To wonder and to begin. \nThe second half of the workshop will include a collaborative writing process: at each table\, participants will create a group pantoum\, a form with roots in Malaysia that loops and repeats from quatrain to quatrain. What begins as an individual line will become part of a shared rhythm\, shifting meaning as it moves from one person to the next. This collective process will allow us to move past the borders of our own pages\, loosening control and making room for surprise\, connection\, and co-creation. \nIt’s not about making a perfect poem. It’s about experimentation and gathering; discovering what becomes possible when we write together; and seeing the reverberations and juxtapositions that invite us to see our own words — and each other’s — in new ways. Together\, we’ll explore how writing can be an act of deep hospitality — welcoming the lines of others into the same space to create new relationships and new meanings. \nYou don’t need to come in with an academic opinion\, or even a sense of yourself as a writer. You don’t even need to consider yourself creative. All you need is a desire to write and be in community. \nTo support our non-profit programming and to help us cover costs\, this workshop is $10. If you are experiencing barriers to attend\, please reach out over email. We’re happy to provide you with one of our scholarship spots. We have reserved half of our available seats for attendees who are BIPOC/PGM. Anyone who self-identifies as Black\, Indigenous and/or a Person of Colour or People of the Global Majority is welcome to buy these tickets. \nWe have very limited seating and spots go quickly\, so please reserve your place here! \nWhat to bring:\nPlease bring something to write with\, an open mind\, a mask and a willingness to let your words travel beyond you. (If you forget a mask\, a pen or paper\, don’t worry\, we got you!). Please note\, we strive to maintain a fragrance-free environment to support the health and comfort of all participants (including the health of the facilitator) — please avoid wearing scented products. \nAdditional information:\nIf you can’t make it to this workshop\, you can find Preeti’s online drop-in writing sessions here. Langford and Danielle LaFrance\, as we celebrate the launch of Mascarenhas’ new collection\, A Catalogue of Risk. \nThis debut book of poetry is a “volte-face of the neoliberal market economy’s construction of isolated\, individual safety… Mascarenhas lingers in the question of risk as it arises in daily life and intimacy. Through a close study and partial translation of philosopher-psychoanalyst Anne Dufourmantelle’s Éloge du risque (2011)\, her poems posit risk as a fissure\, through which we might imagine yet-unknown futures\,” says publisher Wendy’s Subway. \nBooks will be on hand for sale and signing. This event is free\, but please register for your spot here as capacity is limited! \nMore about the fellow readers: \nSasha J. SUMMARY:The Climate Readers’ Retreat
DESCRIPTION:Our world needs scalable\, systemic change\, and now. But most of us don’t have the time and space in our daily lives to deeply reflect on what our contribution to solving the climate crisis might be. \nThe Climate Readers’ Retreat is an opportunity for people with a passion for climate and democracy to work through ideas and solutions for their communities together. \nWe’re thrilled to partner with Hollyhock\, a Retreat Center nestled on the shores of Cortes Island\, British Columbia. Hollyhock is a hub for holistic learning and leadership\, offering transformative programs that foster personal growth and connection with nature. Together\, we aim to inspire meaningful change through the shared exploration of stories\, self-discovery\, and collective renewal. \nAlongside the wild beauty of Cortes Island\, participants will enjoy multiple small-group talks with Pulitzer Prize finalist John Vaillant\, author of The Golden Spruce and Fire Weather\, as well as participate in structured and collaborative discussions with award-winning climate communications strategist Zoe Grams and celebrated environmental journalist and conservationist Ian Gill.  \nLet’s move beyond platitudes into a space of rigorous contemplation and commitment. This is an opportunity to explore how to move from despair or mourning into organizing; to discuss tough questions about action and complicity; to discover and share techniques for renewing your energy for change; to find out how we can talk about the current political reality in order to galvanize people to action; and to create a plan to transform how you contribute to our shared futures.  \nIf you’re seeking inspiration to stoke your work in the months ahead\, to find tools for deepening your work in climate action\, this is a unique opportunity. In a time when new narratives are essential\, the Climate Readers Retreat supports those searching for—and creating—new stories of renewal\, regeneration and resistance. \nJohn Vaillant is an author and freelance writer whose work has appeared in The New Yorker\, The Atlantic\, National Geographic\, and the Guardian\, among others. His first book\, The Golden Spruce (Knopf\, 2005)\, was a bestseller and won several awards\, including the Governor General’s and Rogers Trust awards for non-fiction. His second non-fiction book\, The Tiger (Knopf\, 2010)\, won the B.C. Achievement Award for Non-Fiction\, was a bestseller selected for Canada Reads\, and has been published in 17 languages. In 2014 Vaillant won the Windham-Campbell Prize\, a global award for non-fiction. In 2015\, he published his first work of fiction\, The Jaguar’s Children \, which was long-listed for the Dublin IMPAC and Kirkus Fiction Prizes\, and was a finalist for the Writers’ Trust Fiction Prize. Vaillant’s latest book\, Fire Weather\, is a #1 national bestseller that won Britain’s Baillie Gifford Prize\, a global prize for English language non-fiction\, and was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize\, the U.S. National Book Award\, the PEN John Kenneth Galbraith Non-Fiction Award\, the Writers‘ Trust Nonfiction Prize\, and Britain’s Wainwright Prize. It was named one of the ten best books of 2023 by The New York Times\, among many other prominent publications. In Canada\, Fire Weather won the Shaughnessy-Cohen Prize for Political Writing\, the Dafoe Book Prize\, and the Hubert Evans Prize for Non-Fiction.  Of particular interest to Canadians may be that it was heartily recommended on twitter by both Catherine McKenna and Andrew MacDougall (Stephen Harper’s former head of comms).  \nZoe Grams is an award-winning strategist and organization leader who works at the intersection of storytelling and environmental and social justice. She is founder of Zg Stories—a B-Corporation communications agency; co-founder of Upstart & Crow\, a creative non-profit; and former Chair/Co-Chair of multiple boards including WISH Drop-In Centre Society and KidSafe (amongst others). She has provided advocacy strategy and large-scale communications outreach to non-profits\, municipal governments\, Indigenous Nations\, and purpose-driven companies across Canada and the US for more than a decade. Born and raised in Scotland\, she holds an MA in Philosophy from The University of Glasgow and an MSc with Distinction in Politics and Communication from the London School of Economics. \nIan Gill is an Australian-born author\, journalist\, critic\, conservationist and co-founder of the bioregional initiative Salmon Nation and storytelling initiative the Magic Canoe. Ian worked for almost 20 years as CEO of Ecotrust in Canada\, the US and Australia\, and has extensive experience in community and economic development in coastal communities along North America’s west coast. He is co-founder of Upstart & Crow\, a literary non-profit\, and is a contributing editor at The Tyee. His book on Haida Gwaii\, All That We Say is Ours\, was re-released in paperback in 2022.

SUMMARY:The Erotics of Cutting Grass: A Reading with Kate Braid
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Friday\, May 16 at 6:30 p.m. for a night with lauded B.C. author Kate Braid and enjoy a reading from her new collection The Erotics of Cutting Grass (Caitlin Press)\, a celebration of life’s later chapters and an embrace of ageing on one’s own terms. Braid will be joined by author Rob Taylor for a conversation about this uplifting new work. \nBraid has never been one to follow the beaten path. In 1977\, she broke barriers by stepping — or rather\, stumbling — into the male-dominated world of construction. SUMMARY:An Evening with Literary Magpie: Tree Abraham
DESCRIPTION:Take the opportunity to meet one of the literary world’s most exciting young talents — writer\, collager\, book cover designer\, and all round scavenger\, Tree Abraham. We can’t wait to host her for a virtual conversation about her work\, her process\, her artistic life\, and much more! \nAbraham is the author of the brand-new book elseship: an unrequited affair\, an artistic portrait recounting and creating meaning from the year that followed a friendship confronted by unrequited love. Abraham details the beauty and mania of this experience\, mapping thought pathways\, confessing ugly truths\, and treading the edges of eroding territory.  \nThe book is woven through with personal entries\, research\, photos and disagrams\, all organized within the eight ancient Greek categories of love. This is a deeply specific yet universal story of modern love that will accompany and enlighten anyone who’s been in any kind of complicated “ship.” \nAbraham will be in conversation with Upstart & Crow staffer\, Robyn Smith. This is a free event\, but please RSVP here. You’ll have the option to purchase a copy of elseship (Book*hug Press)\, which you can pick up at Upstart & Crow or have shipped right to your door. \nPlease select between three ticket options: general admission (free)\, donation\, or book + general admission. Purchasing the book is not required\, but you’ll receive 10% off if you do! \nMore about the author: \nTree Abraham is an Ottawa-born\, Brooklyn-based writer\, art director\, and book designer. Her works experiment with collaged essays and mixed media visuals. She is also the author of the creative nonfiction book Cyclettes. \nMore about Upstart & Crow: \nLocated on Granville Island\, Upstart & Crow is a not-for-profit literary arts studio for curious readers and creative storytellers alike. SUMMARY:Translation Spotlight: An Evening of Mexican Literature With Jorge Amigo & Sarah Revilla-Sanchez
DESCRIPTION:There’s no perfect translation for sobremesa. It’s a cherished tradition across Latin America—that warm\, beautiful time after a meal where you talk\, debate\, laugh… you sobremesa! \nWe’re hosting a sobremesa on Monday\, May 5 at 7pm\, with a combination of sweet treats\, conversation\, and the chance to delve into the fascinating\, brilliant world of contemporary Mexican literature that you’ll definitely want to know about. \nFacilitated by Jorge Amigo (Head of Cultural Programming at the Vancouver Public Library) and Sarah Revilla-Sanchez (UBC doctoral candidate in Hispanic Studies)\, we’ll be celebrating Cinco de Mayo not merely as a day of festivity but as a chance to acknowledge the ongoing fight for decolonization and equity. \nInspired by la sobremesa\, you’ll be seated at our long table with traditional hot drinks\, conchas and other snacks to share. Jorge and Sarah will walk you through some of the brilliant contemporary voices shaping Mexico’s literary landscape—one where the present is pervaded by the past and where fiction offers a means to imagine alternative futures. Together\, we’ll dive into Mexico’s complex postcoloniality\, its diasporas\, the ongoing struggle against gender based violence\, and the literary minds at the forefront of these reflections. \nYou’ll leave with a special itacate—a comprehensive take-home reading list of must-discover authors from Mexico to continue exploring from home…. and some extra warmth and delight. \nTo support our non-profit programming and to help us cover costs\, this event is $30.
