SUMMARY:Listen to the Land Speak: Manchán Magan Live
DESCRIPTION:What if the land speaks\, but we’ve simply forgotten how to listen? \nJoin us for an unforgettable evening with one of Ireland’s most visionary voices. On Wednesday\, July 9 at 6:30 p.m.\, Irish writer and documentarian Manchán Magan invites us to tune in again to the forgotten frequencies of the natural world in a special live event. His return to Vancouver follows multiple sold-out shows that combine a deep reverence for language\, land — and gloriously original thinking. \nDrawing on ancient Irish myth\, the musicality of the old Irish language\, and the goddess-rooted wisdom embedded in stones\, rivers\, and wells\, Manchán leads us on a journey of reconnection with the lost knowledge of the more-than-human world. At a time when both ecological and cultural systems feel increasingly fragile\, Manchán beckons us to rewild not only the Earth\, but the landscapes of our own imaginations. \nThis event has limited seating\, which will fill up fast! Please RSVP here to secure your spot. \nAbout Upstart & Crow: \nLocated on Granville Island\, Upstart & Crow is a not-for-profit literary arts studio for curious readers and creative storytellers alike. We are international in our outlook\, and local in our sensibilities. We create opportunities to surface new talent and champion bold ideas through events\, workshops\, literary launches\, unique partnerships — and yes\, we also sell books! \nAccessibility: \nThe main studio of our shop is accessible for folks with mobility aids. There is a washroom on the main floor available for attendees. \nQuestions: hello[at]upstartandcrow.com.

SUMMARY:Writing Toward Borderless Solidarities: A Workshop with Poet in Residence\, Preeti Kaur Dhaliwal
DESCRIPTION:Presented in collaboration with Indian Summer Festival\, this generative workshop with Preeti Kaur Dhaliwal\, Upstart & Crow’s 2025 Poet in Residence\, invites participants to explore the theme of borderless solidarities through creative writing\, connection\, and shared reflection. \nWe’ll begin with a series of freewriting exercises that invite you to explore the idea of borders — between people\, places\, identities\, and within ourselves. Through grounding prompts\, sensory details\, and gentle strategies to quiet the inner critic\, we’ll experiment with different ways to find your flow and create space for language to move through us with more ease. To wonder and to begin. \nThe second half of the workshop will include a collaborative writing process: at each table\, participants will create a group pantoum\, a form with roots in Malaysia that loops and repeats from quatrain to quatrain. What begins as an individual line will become part of a shared rhythm\, shifting meaning as it moves from one person to the next. This collective process will allow us to move past the borders of our own pages\, loosening control and making room for surprise\, connection\, and co-creation. \nIt’s not about making a perfect poem. It’s about experimentation and gathering; discovering what becomes possible when we write together; and seeing the reverberations and juxtapositions that invite us to see our own words — and each other’s — in new ways. Together\, we’ll explore how writing can be an act of deep hospitality — welcoming the lines of others into the same space to create new relationships and new meanings. \nYou don’t need to come in with an academic opinion\, or even a sense of yourself as a writer. You don’t even need to consider yourself creative. All you need is a desire to write and be in community. \nTo support our non-profit programming and to help us cover costs\, this workshop is $10. If you are experiencing barriers to attend\, please reach out over email. We’re happy to provide you with one of our scholarship spots. We have reserved half of our available seats for attendees who are BIPOC/PGM. Anyone who self-identifies as Black\, Indigenous and/or a Person of Colour or People of the Global Majority is welcome to buy these tickets. \nWe have very limited seating and spots go quickly\, so please reserve your place here! \nWhat to bring:\nPlease bring something to write with\, an open mind\, a mask and a willingness to let your words travel beyond you. (If you forget a mask\, a pen or paper\, don’t worry\, we got you!). Please note\, we strive to maintain a fragrance-free environment to support the health and comfort of all participants (including the health of the facilitator) — please avoid wearing scented products. \nAdditional information:\nIf you can’t make it to this workshop\, you can find Preeti’s online drop-in writing sessions here. SUMMARY:‘A Catalogue of Risk’: Launch and Reading with Alisha Mascarenhas
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Upstart & Crow for an evening of poetry with Brooklyn-based poet Alisha Mascarenhas\, joined by local writers Sasha J. Langford and Danielle LaFrance\, as we celebrate the launch of Mascarenhas’ new collection\, A Catalogue of Risk. \nThis debut book of poetry is a “volte-face of the neoliberal market economy’s construction of isolated\, individual safety… Mascarenhas lingers in the question of risk as it arises in daily life and intimacy. Through a close study and partial translation of philosopher-psychoanalyst Anne Dufourmantelle’s Éloge du risque (2011)\, her poems posit risk as a fissure\, through which we might imagine yet-unknown futures\,” says publisher Wendy’s Subway. \nBooks will be on hand for sale and signing. This event is free\, but please register for your spot here as capacity is limited! \nMore about the fellow readers: \nSasha J. Langford is a composer and interdisciplinary artist\, who works at the intersection of sound\, writing\, performance\, and social practice. Sasha’s solo and collaborative work has been presented at Ehkä-Kutomo (Turku\, FI)\, FestivALT (Kraków\, PL)\, Lines of Flight Festival of Experimental Music (Dunedin\, NZ)\, Ende Tymes (Brooklyn\, NY)\, and the Western Front (Vancouver\, BC)\, among other venues. She teaches\, organizes\, thinks\, and conspires on occupied xʷməθkʷəy̓əm\, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh\, and səl̓ílwətaʔɬ territories known as Vancouver. \nDanielle LaFrance is a poet and information de-professional. Their commitments revolve around questions of liberation\, resistance\, and pleasure. LaFrance is the author of species branding (Capilano University Editions\, 2010)\, Friendly + Fire (Talonbooks\, 2016)\, JUST LIKE I LIKE IT (Talonbooks\, 2019)\, and #postdildo (Talonbooks\, 2022). SUMMARY:The Climate Readers’ Retreat
DESCRIPTION:Our world needs scalable\, systemic change\, and now. But most of us don’t have the time and space in our daily lives to deeply reflect on what our contribution to solving the climate crisis might be. \nThe Climate Readers’ Retreat is an opportunity for people with a passion for climate and democracy to work through ideas and solutions for their communities together. \nWe’re thrilled to partner with Hollyhock\, a Retreat Center nestled on the shores of Cortes Island\, British Columbia. Hollyhock is a hub for holistic learning and leadership\, offering transformative programs that foster personal growth and connection with nature. Together\, we aim to inspire meaningful change through the shared exploration of stories\, self-discovery\, and collective renewal. \nAlongside the wild beauty of Cortes Island\, participants will enjoy multiple small-group talks with Pulitzer Prize finalist John Vaillant\, author of The Golden Spruce and Fire Weather\, as well as participate in structured and collaborative discussions with award-winning climate communications strategist Zoe Grams and celebrated environmental journalist and conservationist Ian Gill. \nLet’s move beyond platitudes into a space of rigorous contemplation and commitment. This is an opportunity to explore how to move from despair or mourning into organizing; to discuss tough questions about action and complicity; to discover and share techniques for renewing your energy for change; to find out how we can talk about the current political reality in order to galvanize people to action; and to create a plan to transform how you contribute to our shared futures. \nIf you’re seeking inspiration to stoke your work in the months ahead\, to find tools for deepening your work in climate action\, this is a unique opportunity. In a time when new narratives are essential\, the Climate Readers Retreat supports those searching for—and creating—new stories of renewal\, regeneration and resistance. \nJohn Vaillant is an author and freelance writer whose work has appeared in The New Yorker\, The Atlantic\, National Geographic\, and the Guardian\, among others. His first book\, The Golden Spruce (Knopf\, 2005)\, was a bestseller and won several awards\, including the Governor General’s and Rogers Trust awards for non-fiction. His second non-fiction book\, The Tiger (Knopf\, 2010)\, won the B.C. Achievement Award for Non-Fiction\, was a bestseller selected for Canada Reads\, and has been published in 17 languages. In 2014 Vaillant won the Windham-Campbell Prize\, a global award for non-fiction. In 2015\, he published his first work of fiction\, The Jaguar’s Children \, which was long-listed for the Dublin IMPAC and Kirkus Fiction Prizes\, and was a finalist for the Writers’ Trust Fiction Prize. Vaillant’s latest book\, Fire Weather\, is a #1 national bestseller that won Britain’s Baillie Gifford Prize\, a global prize for English language non-fiction\, and was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize\, the U.S. National Book Award\, the PEN John Kenneth Galbraith Non-Fiction Award\, the Writers‘ Trust Nonfiction Prize\, and Britain’s Wainwright Prize. It was named one of the ten best books of 2023 by The New York Times\, among many other prominent publications. In Canada\, Fire Weather won the Shaughnessy-Cohen Prize for Political Writing\, the Dafoe Book Prize\, and the Hubert Evans Prize for Non-Fiction. Of particular interest to Canadians may be that it was heartily recommended on twitter by both Catherine McKenna and Andrew MacDougall (Stephen Harper’s former head of comms). \nZoe Grams is an award-winning strategist and organization leader who works at the intersection of storytelling and environmental and social justice. She is founder of Zg Stories—a B-Corporation communications agency; co-founder of Upstart & Crow\, a creative non-profit; and former Chair/Co-Chair of multiple boards including WISH Drop-In Centre Society and KidSafe (amongst others). She has provided advocacy strategy and large-scale communications outreach to non-profits\, municipal governments\, Indigenous Nations\, and purpose-driven companies across Canada and the US for more than a decade. Born and raised in Scotland\, she holds an MA in Philosophy from The University of Glasgow and an MSc with Distinction in Politics and Communication from the London School of Economics. \nIan Gill is an Australian-born author\, journalist\, critic\, conservationist and co-founder of the bioregional initiative Salmon Nation and storytelling initiative the Magic Canoe. Ian worked for almost 20 years as CEO of Ecotrust in Canada\, the US and Australia\, and has extensive experience in community and economic development in coastal communities along North America’s west coast. He is co-founder of Upstart & Crow\, a literary non-profit\, and is a contributing editor at The Tyee. His book on Haida Gwaii\, All That We Say is Ours\, was re-released in paperback in 2022.

SUMMARY:The Erotics of Cutting Grass: A Reading with Kate Braid
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Friday\, May 16 at 6:30 p.m. for a night with lauded B.C. author Kate Braid and enjoy a reading from her new collection The Erotics of Cutting Grass (Caitlin Press)\, a celebration of life’s later chapters and an embrace of ageing on one’s own terms. Braid will be joined by author Rob Taylor for a conversation about this uplifting new work. \nBraid has never been one to follow the beaten path. In 1977\, she broke barriers by stepping — or rather\, stumbling — into the male-dominated world of construction. With two beloved memoirs\, Journeywoman: Swinging a Hammer in a Man’s World and Hammer & Nail: Notes of a Journeywoman\, she’s shared her journey as a trailblazer in the trades. \nHer new memoir tackles the fresh territory of women\, bodies\, and aging\, and we can’t wait to hear more at Upstart & Crow. Books will be on hand for sale and signing. Tickets are free\, but please RSVP here as space is limited. \n\nAbout the moderator: \nRob Taylor is the author of four poetry collections\, including Weather and The News\, which was a finalist for the Dorothy Livesay Poetry Prize. He is the editor of What the Poets Are Doing: Canadian Poets in Conversation and Best Canadian Poetry 2019. He lives in Port Moody. \nAbout Upstart & Crow: \nLocated on Granville Island\, Upstart & Crow is a not-for-profit literary arts studio for curious readers and creative storytellers alike. SUMMARY:An Evening with Literary Magpie: Tree Abraham
DESCRIPTION:Take the opportunity to meet one of the literary world’s most exciting young talents — writer\, collager\, book cover designer\, and all round scavenger\, Tree Abraham. We can’t wait to host her for a virtual conversation about her work\, her process\, her artistic life\, and much more! \nAbraham is the author of the brand-new book elseship: an unrequited affair\, an artistic portrait recounting and creating meaning from the year that followed a friendship confronted by unrequited love. Abraham details the beauty and mania of this experience\, mapping thought pathways\, confessing ugly truths\, and treading the edges of eroding territory. \nThe book is woven through with personal entries\, research\, photos and disagrams\, all organized within the eight ancient Greek categories of love. This is a deeply specific yet universal story of modern love that will accompany and enlighten anyone who’s been in any kind of complicated “ship.” \nAbraham will be in conversation with Upstart & Crow staffer\, Robyn Smith. This is a free event\, but please RSVP here. You’ll have the option to purchase a copy of elseship (Book*hug Press)\, which you can pick up at Upstart & Crow or have shipped right to your door. \nPlease select between three ticket options: general admission (free)\, donation\, or book + general admission. Purchasing the book is not required\, but you’ll receive 10% off if you do! \nMore about the author: \nTree Abraham is an Ottawa-born\, Brooklyn-based writer\, art director\, and book designer. SUMMARY:Translation Spotlight: An Evening of Mexican Literature With Jorge Amigo & Sarah Revilla-Sanchez
DESCRIPTION:There’s no perfect translation for sobremesa. It’s a cherished tradition across Latin America—that warm\, beautiful time after a meal where you talk\, debate\, laugh… you sobremesa! \nWe’re hosting a sobremesa on Monday\, May 5 at 7pm\, with a combination of sweet treats\, conversation\, and the chance to delve into the fascinating\, brilliant world of contemporary Mexican literature that you’ll definitely want to know about. \nFacilitated by Jorge Amigo (Head of Cultural Programming at the Vancouver Public Library) and Sarah Revilla-Sanchez (UBC doctoral candidate in Hispanic Studies)\, we’ll be celebrating Cinco de Mayo not merely as a day of festivity but as a chance to acknowledge the ongoing fight for decolonization and equity. \nInspired by la sobremesa\, you’ll be seated at our long table with traditional hot drinks\, conchas and other snacks to share. Jorge and Sarah will walk you through some of the brilliant contemporary voices shaping Mexico’s literary landscape—one where the present is pervaded by the past and where fiction offers a means to imagine alternative futures. Together\, we’ll dive into Mexico’s complex postcoloniality\, its diasporas\, the ongoing struggle against gender based violence\, and the literary minds at the forefront of these reflections. \nYou’ll leave with a special itacate—a comprehensive take-home reading list of must-discover authors from Mexico to continue exploring from home…. and some extra warmth and delight. \nTo support our non-profit programming and to help us cover costs\, this event is $30. Tickets available here. \nMore about the facilitators: \nJorge Amigo is the Head of Cultural Programming for the Vancouver Public Library. He previously worked at the Toronto Public Library and Canada’s National Observer. Jorge is also proud to be part of the Upstart & Crow Board of Directors. He grew up in Mexico City and has lived in Canada since 2007. \nSarah Revilla-Sanchez (she/her) is a doctoral candidate in Hispanic Studies at the University of British Columbia. Her research examines how contemporary literary works by Mexican women are increasingly engaging with the Gothic mode to grapple with gender-based violence. She previously completed a master’s degree in Sociology at the University of Victoria and a master’s degree in Comparative Literatures and Arts at Brock University. \nMore about Upstart & Crow: \nUpstart & Crow is a not-for-profit creative studio and literary incubator that champions writers\, readers and stories\, and the role they play in shaping our lives. SUMMARY:Translator for a Night: A Workshop with Janet Hong
DESCRIPTION:Translation\, often considered an act of literary alchemy\, allows beloved texts to live fully in new linguistic and cultural spaces. Yet despite its essential role in the literary world\, it’s an art form that many of us who speak only one language have never experienced first-hand.\n \nWhat if you could step into the shoes of a translator for one night? Join us on Tuesday\, March 11 at 6:30 PM for an immersive translation workshop in which you’ll discover the techniques and magic of translating texts… whether you know one language or five. \nLed by renowned translator\, Janet Hong\, this hands-on workshop offers an introduction to the art and practice of translation: how it works\, why it matters\, and the creative decisions that shape a text’s journey from one language to another. You will work with annotated excerpts from renowned literary works in French\, Spanish\, or German to craft your own English translations—which we’ll then discuss and compare to the published English. Together\, we’ll reflect on the interpretive choices that contribute to the act of translation\, uncovering the many nuances between fidelity and creativity that inform this vital art. \nTo support our non-profit programming and to help us cover costs\, this workshop is $10 . SUMMARY:Windows as Metaphor: A Poetry Workshop with Doretta Lau & Holly Flauto
DESCRIPTION:How might windows serve as a dual metaphor—a lens to the outside world and a mirror reflecting the self? \nJoin writers Doretta Lau and Holly Flauto on Saturday\, March 1 at 9am for an immersive poetry workshop on perspective\, reflection\, and transformation. \nThe barriers we pass through\, both in body and in metaphor\, can be destabilizing. But what if we lingered in these midway spaces? In this workshop\, participants will create poems based on a series of guided writing activities exploring the self as viewed through glass and frame. Refine your craft\, express your creativity\, and write in community. \nThis free-or-by-donation workshop is designed for everyone\, whether you’re a seasoned poet looking to refine your craft or a newcomer curious about exploring the world of poetry. Paper and writing utensils will be provided. Space is limited so please register to reserve your spot! \n \nMore about the facilitating poets: \nDoretta Lau started watching horror movies at age nine and sketch comedy at eleven\, which was probably why she ended up completing an MFA in Writing at Columbia University. The Atlantic named her short story collection\, How Does a Single Blade of Grass Thank the Sun?\, as a best book of 2014. The title story was shortlisted for the 2013 Writers’ Trust McClelland & Stewart Journey Prize. Her forthcoming novel We Are Underlings is about a dysfunctional workplace struggling to open a theme park that celebrates death. She is developing a television show for FX based on this book with Pulitzer Prize–winning writer Eboni Booth. \nHolly Flauto lives and writes on the traditional\, ancestral and stolen territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm\, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh and Selilwitulh Nations. Her book of poetry\, Permission to Settle\, one of CBC Books Best Canadian Poetry of 2024\, fills in the blanks of the application for Permanent Residency with a series of memoir-based poems that investigate the implicit biases in the colonial system of boxes and check marks that still seek to categorize “the other” and to harness it in the face of reconciliation. Holly grew up moving between the US and South America; she immigrated to Canada in 2008. Holly teaches writing in the English department at Capilano University. \n \nMore about Upstart & Crow: \nUpstart & Crow is a not-for-profit creative studio and literary incubator that champions writers\, readers and stories\, and the role they play in shaping our lives. SUMMARY:Write/Draw: An Integrated Workshop on Noticing
DESCRIPTION:The Write/Draw workshop series is a powerful tool for deepening your creative practice — whether that’s writing\, drawing or both. Write/Draw shifts focus from creating a “finished” work of art product to fostering an open\, observant mindset. \nAt the heart of the workshops is the idea of “noticing what we notice\,” where drawing trains the eye to see and writing further illuminates the thoughts and reactions that surface. This approach transforms routine objects and experiences into avenues for profound awareness and connection\, creating a dialog between what’s seen and felt. By pairing visual and written reflection\, participants uncover insights that might otherwise remain hidden\, resulting in an alchemy of greater creativity\, discovery\, and personal growth. \nLed by artist Louise Phillips\, you’ll be guided through a series of exercises in drawing and writing. Although the practice is easy\, our discoveries can be profound. You’ll take away a tool of discovery you can enjoy using again and again. \nLouise’s practice began with her daily study of an ordinary paintbrush\, drawing it in unique ways over several months and then writing about each experience. This consistent practice revealed new insights into both her art and herself\, changing her approach to teaching by prioritizing curiosity and observation. \nNo prior artistic or literary experience is required. \nThis event is free by donation. Reserve your tickets here! Please choose between our two seating options: Sunday\, January 19 from 9-11am or Sunday\, January 26 from 9-11am. \nMore about Upstart & Crow: \nLocated on Granville Island\, Upstart & Crow is a not-for-profit literary arts studio for curious readers and creative storytellers alike. We are international in our outlook\, and local in our sensibilities. We create opportunities to surface new talent and champion bold ideas through events\, workshops\, literary launches\, unique partnerships — and yes\, we also sell books! \nHealth precautions: \nWe want this event to be safe for all. Masks are welcome\, though we won’t enforce them. We hope that folks who come will be vaccinated and boosted and will stay home if they feel ill. \nAccessibility: \nThe main studio of our shop is accessible for folks with mobility aids. SUMMARY:Cemeteries for the Future: A Single-Page Zine Workshop
DESCRIPTION:If the tombstones of your ancestors (chosen or otherwise) asked questions\, what would they be? \nJoin us on Thursday\, January 16th at 6:30PM for an introductory workshop on zine-making! \nIn this workshop we’ll use the single-page zine to commemorate our big and little griefs and also those we don’t yet know the shape of (grief for the state of the world\, grief for the death of a past self or belief\, for the death of a dream\, a fear\, a tradition\, a space/place/mindset we can no longer visit\, for the death of a dear one\, etc.) by reimagining the tombstone as a monument that can speak back –– a monument that can name our hurt but also metabolize it into resistance. \nWe will also explore our different relationships to customs and spaces of memorial and ask what we might still desire from our cemeteries –– what commemorations are missing? How might cemeteries become more integrated into our daily lives? What kinds of community organizing could emerge from such a space? Are there cemeteries we wish we could visit but no longer have access to? What does it mean to be buried in land? For those of us who are settlers\, what does it mean to be buried in stolen land? These are just a few of the many questions we’ll explore in this workshop. \nMore about Jess Goldman: Jess Goldman is an anti-Zionist Jewish writer\, comics artist\, and amateur puppeteer based on the traditional\, unceded lands of the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh\, Səlilwətaɬ\, and Mʷməθkʷəy̓əm Nations. Their writing has been published in Maisonneuve\, the CBC and Room Magazine. A graduate of UBC’s MFA in Creative Writing Program\, their writing explores that sweet spot where Yiddishkayt and queer culture joyfully collide. \nThis event is free by donation. Reserve your tickets here! \nMore about Upstart & Crow: \nLocated on Granville Island\, Upstart & Crow is a not-for-profit literary arts studio for curious readers and creative storytellers alike. SUMMARY:Homing: Vancouver Launch
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Saturday\, Nov. 30 at 6:30 p.m. to launch Homing\, Alice Irene Whittaker’s powerful debut memoir that captures her profound journey from a commuter-lifestyle to a refuge in the woods. \nOverwhelmed by obsessive productivity and environmental anxiety\, recovering perfectionist Alice Irene Whittaker and her family decide to retreat to a cabin in the woods. Surrounded by creek\, forest\, and woodland animals\, Alice Irene begins a lifelong journey of repairing her fractured relationship with both herself and the natural world. She asks herself\, “How can I take care of the Earth if I don’t know how to take care of myself?” \nHer quest takes her to meet a renowned economist-rancher in Colorado\, to stand at the side of a runway at a sustainable fashion show in Portland\, and to witness firsthand rewilding of wolves in Yellowstone. She interviews and learns from dozens of people who are building homes\, growing food\, making clothes\, raising families\, and living their lives in regenerative ways. \nSearching for the spaces between the sorrow of wildfires and the beauty of wildflowers\, Homing is a lyrical memoir about moving from a life of despair to a life of care. \nThis event is free\, but please register at our Eventbrite to let us know you’re coming! \nMore about Upstart & Crow: \nLocated on Granville Island\, Upstart & Crow is a not-for-profit literary arts studio for curious readers and creative storytellers alike. It made me feel not alone… What is it about the darker side of Christmas that keeps [JJ Lee] coming back?” \nAnthology editor Lee and contributing authors Lillian Au\, Averill Groeneveld-Meijer\, Jill Maynard\, Jennifer Pownall\, and Léa Taranto will discuss why bad holiday stories can feel so good. \nMore about the editor: \nJJ Lee is the author of the memoir The Measure of a Man: The Story of a Father\, a Son\, and a Suit\, which was a finalist for the Hilary Weston Writers’ Trust Prize for Non-Fiction\, the Charles Taylor Prize for Literary Non-Fiction\, the BC Book Prize’s Hubert Evans Non-Fiction Prize\, and the Governor General’s Literary Award for Non-Fiction. SUMMARY:A Sunday Morning with Yuri Herrera
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a Found in Translation discussion on Sunday\, Nov. 3 at 10am PDT with Yuri Herrera about history\, justice\, literature… and how 19th-century New Orleans can help us understand the world we live in. \n“Told in Herrera’s typically sparkling\, form-exploding language\, this one is screaming ‘modern epic.’” — Brittany Allen\, Literary Hub \nA master mesmerizer of both prose and plot\, Yuri Herrera is one of Upstart & Crow’s literary heroes\, and we’re thrilled to present a conversation with him about his latest work: Season of the Swamp (translated from the Spanish by Lisa Dillman). \nThis is a magnificent work of speculative history centring a young exile named Benito Juárez\, who disembarks at a fetid port city at the edge of a swamp. Years later\, he will become the first indigenous head of state in the postcolonial Americas\, but now he is as anonymous and invisible as any other migrant to the roiling and alluring city of New Orleans. \nHerrera imagines the 18 months Juárez spent in the city in 1853. In New Orleans\, amidst the carnivalesque reality and the grotesque trafficking of human beings\, Juárez tries to shape his future. Publisher’s Weekly describes the novel as “glorious and messy as the best New Orleans gumbo\,” and celebrates Herrera’s vivid depiction of the chaos of Mardi Gras. “It’s a triumph.” \nReserve your ticket here. \nMore about Upstart & Crow: \nLocated on Granville Island\, Upstart & Crow is a literary arts studio for curious readers and creative storytellers alike. There is a washroom on the main floor available for attendees. \nQuestions: hello@upstartandcrow.com.
