A Sunday Morning with Yuri Herrera

Sunday, November 3, 2024

Online via Zoom

Description

Join us for a Found in Translation discussion on Sunday, Nov. 3 at 10am PDT with Yuri Herrera about history, justice, literature… and how 19th-century New Orleans can help us understand the world we live in.

“Told in Herrera’s typically sparkling, form-exploding language, this one is screaming ‘modern epic.’” — Brittany Allen, Literary Hub

A master mesmerizer of both prose and plot, Yuri Herrera is one of Upstart & Crow’s literary heroes, and we’re thrilled to present a conversation with him about his latest work: Season of the Swamp (translated from the Spanish by Lisa Dillman).

This is a magnificent work of speculative history centring a young exile named Benito Juárez, who disembarks at a fetid port city at the edge of a swamp. Years later, he will become the first indigenous head of state in the postcolonial Americas, but now he is as anonymous and invisible as any other migrant to the roiling and alluring city of New Orleans.

Herrera imagines the 18 months Juárez spent in the city in 1853. In New Orleans, amidst the carnivalesque reality and the grotesque trafficking of human beings, Juárez tries to shape his future. Publisher’s Weekly describes the novel as “glorious and messy as the best New Orleans gumbo,” and celebrates Herrera’s vivid depiction of the chaos of Mardi Gras. “It’s a triumph.”
