Discover the ways we play with words, celebrate ideas and create community.
We invite readers to search a collection that includes a large range of titles from independent and small presses in Canada and the US, alongside international fiction. Life’s too short to read the same thing as everyone else. We help you to find books that belong with you, and that you’ll want to share with others. Our titles are inventively categorized and feature regularly rotating recommendations.
Read a sentence that wasn’t originally written in your primary language and immediately your perspective shifts. Combine that with discovering voices from different countries and different cultures and you begin to understand why Upstart & Crow is so passionate about fiction in translation. Our Found in Translation Series of author interviews introduces our followers to some of the most interesting, readable, immersive books translated into English and available in Canada today. Next Spring we will be launching a Found in Translation book club to further promote great works from afar.
We are proud to partner with the Thistalalh Library, a first-of-its kind community library in Bella Bella, in the heart of Haíɫzaqv (Heiltsuk) territory in the Great Bear Rainforest. The library’s curator, Jess Housty says, “Stories are sacred things. As Haíɫzaqv people, we really are nothing more than the sum of the stories we have lived in.”
Coming in 2022, our mezzanine will be home to rotating Storytellers in Residence. We will provide modest financial support and a great place to work for emerging talent. We also welcome renowned authors interested in writing in the space for short stints. We intend to publish these short works and to share them with our community – and with publishers looking for bright new additions to our city’s literary firmament.
We offer a literary twist to online gift packages. Tell us about your reading habits, and we’ll hand-select books uniquely for your tastes, or those of someone near and dear. Combine them with other special items such as stationery, homewares, art or confectionary, all of which is carefully sourced from small-batch producers.
