Description
Welcome to Upstart & Crow’s In Translation Book Club, a celebration of global literature and storytelling across languages and borders! This free, bi-monthly event in our studio space introduces readers to powerful voices writing in languages other than English, amplifying fresh perspectives, underheard narratives and bold ideas.
On Wednesday, August 26 at 6:00pm, we’ll be discussing Electric Shamans at the Festival of the Sun, by Mónica Ojeda, translated by Sarah Booker.
Set in a music festival in the slopes of Ecuador’s volcanoes, this novel is a series of pulsing, incantatory narratives. The story is narrated by four young people, plus a fifth ambiguous voice… Alongside their own experiences, they tell the story of a girl named Noa. Something’s happened to her, something strange, but we’re not sure what. Awash in the music of “post-apocalyptic poets”, this is a story about birth and death, silence and noise, desire, grief, violence, and yes, music. All told with Ojeda’s “beautiful and abysmal voice.”
Bring yourself and an open mind to discuss the book! You do not need to have purchased the book from us to attend, but we’ll be offering a 10% discount on the title if you do. You can do so by selecting between two ticket options here.
