Top Shelf: Volume 3

Friday, December 8, 2023

Upstart & Crow Studio

Description

Haters will say winter is dark and dreary, but the silver lining of those early sunsets? More time to curl up and read — in bed, by fire, or sprawled out on the couch in unergonomic bliss. Whatever your style, you’re invited to join the Friend Public Library and Upstart & Crow for Top Shelf Vol. 3 to celebrate the longest reading nights of the year.

Join us for a sparkly evening of delicious cocktails, great reads, and impeccable company. We’ve crafted a literary menu quite likely to include your new favourite book, or at least one that you’ll be proud to wrap up and re-gift when you’re done with it. While perusing, enjoy some snacks and tunes, make a new friend by the Dystopia shelf, and cosplay as Hugh Grant in Notting Hill by offering your own recommendation to a charming stranger. Why not!

As always, we’ll be offering tasty pairings of books and hand-crafted cocktails from the good folks at Please! to delight all your senses at once. Our book sommeliers are available for tailored recommendations and literary matchmaking. We’re holding two 90-minute “seatings” on Dec. 8. Choose your time slot of either 6 or 8 p.m.

Get tickets here.

Tickets include:

— A freshly bottled cocktail from the good people at Please! Beverage Co.
— A $25 gift certificate towards Upstart & Crow purchases
— Book recommendations for everyone on your holiday list
— The opportunity to browse this “literary living room” on a cozy winter evening

Meet your Book Sommeliers:

Michelle Cyca is a freelance journalist and avid library patron.
Megan Lau is your resident nonfiction aficionado and culture nerd.

More about Upstart & Crow:

Located on Granville Island, Upstart & Crow is a literary arts studio for curious readers and creative storytellers alike. We are international in our outlook, and local in our sensibilities. We create opportunities to surface new talent and champion bold ideas through events, workshops, literary launches, unique partnerships — and yes, we also sell books!

Health precautions:

We want this event to be fun and safe! Masks are welcome, though we won’t enforce them. We hope that folks who come will be vaccinated and boosted and will stay home if they feel ill.

Accessibility:

The main studio of our shop is accessible for folks with mobility aids, though there is a small mezzanine with stairs where the bar will be located. Staff will be happy to bring drinks to guests not able to access the mezzanine. All books and merchandise are on the main floor. There is a washroom on the main floor available for attendees.

Capacity:

We have limited each “seating” to 25 to ensure ample space for folks to browse and enjoy.
