Description
Translation, often considered an act of literary alchemy, allows beloved texts to live fully in new linguistic and cultural spaces. Yet despite its essential role in the literary world, it’s an art form that many of us who speak only one language have never experienced first-hand.
What if you could step into the shoes of a translator for one night? Join us on Tuesday, March 11 at 6:30 PM for an immersive translation workshop in which you’ll discover the techniques and magic of translating texts… whether you know one language or five.
Led by renowned translator, Janet Hong, this hands-on workshop offers an introduction to the art and practice of translation: how it works, why it matters, and the creative decisions that shape a text’s journey from one language to another. You will work with annotated excerpts from renowned literary works in French, Spanish, or German to craft your own English translations—which we’ll then discuss and compare to the published English. Together, we’ll reflect on the interpretive choices that contribute to the act of translation, uncovering the many nuances between fidelity and creativity that inform this vital art.
To support our non-profit programming and to help us cover costs, this workshop is $10 . If you are experiencing barriers to attend, please reach out over email — we are happy to provide you with one of our reserved free-by-donation tickets. This workshop is accessible to monolingual participants. No prior knowledge of another language is required.
We have limited seating, so please reserve your spot here!
