Two Tyee Titans: andrea bennett and Christopher Cheung in Conversation

Wednesday, November 6, 2024

Upstart & Crow Studio

Description

Join us on Wednesday, November 6 as two staffers at The Tyee, B.C.’s best-read online news source, chat about their newest books!

Combining journalism, cultural commentary, and personal reflection, andrea bennett’s Hearty explores appetite and desire in food media, the art of substitution, seed saving, complex societal narratives around health and pleasure, and more. For those tired of the same old stereotypes, Christopher Cheung’s Under the White Gaze is a candid investigation into race in Canadian reporting that challenges the way we think about the news we consume. These two friends and colleagues take nuanced, generous approaches as they unpack common narratives around food and journalism. Guaranteed to be a hearty hangout.

Christopher Cheung is a staff reporter at one of Canada’s earliest online news sources, The Tyee. Previously at Metro and the Vancouver Courier, he is highly acclaimed for his reporting on urban culture, inequality, and life in Metro Vancouver’s diasporas. Among his many honours are two Jack Websters, BC’s top journalism awards. He holds a Master of Journalism from UBC.

andrea bennett is a National Magazine Award–winning writer and a senior editor at The Tyee. Their writing has been published by The Walrus, Chatelaine, The Atlantic, the Globe and Mail, and many other outlets. Their first book of essays, Like a Boy but Not a Boy, was one of CBC Books’ 2020 picks for the top Canadian nonfiction of the year. Originally from Hamilton, bennett is now back on the west coast in Powell River, BC, after a stint in Montreal.
