Upstart Climate Book Club: Human Nature

Wednesday, July 22, 2026

Upstart & Crow Studio

Description

Welcome to Upstart & Crow’s climate book club! Upstart & Crow’s Climate Book Club meets every second month to read and discuss works that illuminate the complexity of our shared ecological present. While some are urgent works of non-fiction, and others are novels or hybrid texts, each book is chosen with care for its ability to open new vantage points, challenge easy answers, and — we hope — fuel our collective fight for a liveable future.

On Wednesday, July 22 at 6 p.m., we’ll be meeting to discuss Human Nature, by Kate Marvel.

Human Nature is a biography of the Earth in nine emotions. In each chapter, Marvel uses a different emotion to explore the science and stories behind climate change. As expected, there is anger, fear, and grief — but also wonder, hope, and love. With her singular voice, Marvel takes us on a soaring journey, one filled with mythology, physics, witchcraft, bad movies, volcanoes, Roman emperors, sequoia groves, and the many small miracles of nature we usually take for granted.

This session will be facilitated by our operations director, Robyn Smith.

Bring yourself and an open mind to discuss the book! You do not need to have purchased the book from us to attend, but we’ll be offering a 10% discount on the title if you do. You can do so by selecting between two ticket options here.
