Upstart Climate Book Club: Vigil

Wednesday, May 27, 2026

Upstart & Crow Studio

Description

Upstart & Crow’s Climate Book Club meets every second month to read and discuss works that illuminate the complexity of our shared ecological present. While some are urgent works of non-fiction, and others are novels or hybrid texts, each book is chosen with care for its ability to open new vantage points, challenge easy answers, and — we hope — fuel our collective fight for a liveable future.

Each meeting will be facilitated by Allison Gacad. Allison (she/her) is a journalist, writer, and filmmaker, based on unceded Coast Salish lands in Vancouver. Her work broadly interrogates the politics and economics of climate solutions.

On Wednesday, May 27 at 6 p.m., we’ll be meeting to discuss Vigil, by George Saunders.

A seasoned afterlife guide named Jill “Doll” Blaine descends once more to escort a dying man — only to encounter a soul unlike any she’s guided before. K. J. Boone, a titan of industry, meets death without remorse, convinced his grand life requires no reckoning. Over the course of a single, surreal night, his mansion fills with visitors both living and dead, human and uncanny, as fragments of his past surface and press toward judgment. With dark humour and imaginative force, Saunders stages a charged confrontation between self-perception and consequence, probing the moral costs of power, the environmental and human tolls of progress, and the uneasy question of whether a life can truly be declared absolved.

Bring yourself and an open mind to discuss the book! You do not need to have purchased the book from us to attend, but we’ll be offering a 10% discount on the title if you do. You can do so by selecting between two ticket options here.
